Audi A6 updates and facelifts

Launched in 1994, the A6 has undergone a series of facelifts and design changes to bring it in line with modern demands and technology. The A6 is available as either a saloon or in the A6 Avant estate model.

In 2004, the A6 evolved through to its third generation, with an exterior redesign as well as the Audi Multi-Media Interface, which brings together a personalised range of infotainment options controlled by an easy-to-use rotary dial.

The Mk4 A6 was introduced in 2011, receiving some subtle design changes on both the interior and exterior based on two of Audi’s other successful models, the A8 and A7. In 2012, Audi released the hybrid model for the A6 and in 2018, it received further subtle design changes, such as the addition of extra technology in the interior including several infotainment screens and Audi’s Virtual Cockpit. Audi also added new trims to the range in 2018.

The Audi A6 performs well against other executive saloons and estates such as the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Volvo S90, Volvo V90 and Jaguar XF. Available in petrol, diesel or hybrid engines, you can choose the best performance and fuel economy for your needs.

Practicality and style of the car

Both the saloon hatchback and Avant estate versions of the A6 offer a decent amount of boot space. The A6 saloon offers 530 litres, and the estate offers 586 litres, which can be expanded by folding down the rear seats to around 1,680 litres. The total boot space available on the A6 Avant is larger by over 150 litres than the total boot space offered by the Volvo V90.

On hybrid models, the boot size does decrease slightly because of the extra technology needed, but this does not detract from the practicality of the boot. The hybrid saloon still offers 360 litres of boot space, and the hybrid Avant estate offers 405 litres.

The A6’s boot is also wide and gives you plenty of space for unloading and loading items. Since the seats fold flat, you don’t have to worry about awkward loading bays either. On the Avant estate, an electric tailgate comes as standard.

As an executive car, the Audi A6 sits at the higher end of insurance groups, falling between groups 30 to 50 for both the saloon and estate models. Road tax for an Audi A6 varies between the saloon and estate. For the saloon, road tax is between £180 to £570 per year, and for the Avant estate it is around £570 per year because of its slightly larger size.

How a used Audi A6 drives

You have a series of petrol, diesel and hybrid engines available to choose from for a used Audi A6.

The petrol range starts off with the 40 TFSI 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine capable of 201bhp. This engine can reach 0-62mph in 7.3 seconds and achieves fuel economy of up to 39.2mpg.

Next is the 45 TFSI 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine capable of 261bhp, which can do 0 to 62mph in six seconds. This engine has a fuel economy of up to 37.2mpg.

A step up from this is the 55TFSI 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 engine, which can put down an impressive 335bhp. The 55TFSI engine achieves 0 to 62mph in just 5.1 seconds and returns up to 31.4mpg.

For diesel engines, there is the 40 TDI 2.0-litre with Quattro all-wheel drive engine, which is capable of 201bhp. It reaches 0 to 62mph in 8.1 seconds and returns up to 47.9mpg.

Next is the 50 TDI 3.0-litre V6 Quattro all-wheel drive engine, which can put down 282bhp. The 50 TDI engine achieves 0 to 62mph in 5.5 seconds and delivers fuel economy of up to 40.4mpg.

For performance enthusiasts, you can also find two other petrol and diesel engines that make the A6 feel more like a supercar than an estate or saloon. Exclusive to the A6 Avant estate, the RS6 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged petrol engine can put down 592bhp and does 0 to 62mph in just 3.6 seconds.

Available on both the A6 saloon and Avant estate is the S6. The S6 has a 3.0-litre V6 turbocharged diesel engine with a 7kWh electric supercharger, which when combined can put down a total of 344bhp and 700Nm of torque. The S6 completes 0 to 62mph in five seconds, giving you that boost of power when overtaking on the motorway.

Two plug-in hybrid engines are also available on an Audi A6. The 50 TFSI e plug-in features a 2.0-litre petrol engine and 14 kWh battery to put down a combined 295bhp and 450Nm of torque. The 50 TSFI e plug-in comes with a seven-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive. It can achieve fuel economy up to 257mpg with fully charged batteries.

Features you can expect in an Audi A6

Interior

The Audi A6 has a well-built and well-finished interior. High-quality materials have been used throughout the cabin, while the exterior has a sleek, upmarket design. Both the saloon and the estate offer premium comfort and good performance, and the interior has been designed to hush engine, road and wind noise, keeping the cabin quiet and calm.

The driver and all passengers have plenty of headroom and legroom in both the A6 saloon and the Avant estate. In iterations after 2018, passengers in the rear will enjoy a slight increase in both headroom and legroom, but even in older iterations, there is still plenty of space.

Storage is also plentiful in the front and rear of the Audi A6. In the front, there is a pair of cupholders and a decent-sized glovebox. There is also, a handy cubby located under the armrest for personal items such as wallets or sunglasses, and the centre console features some storage options for items you want at hand when driving. In the rear, door bins provide good space to put drink bottles and the storage nets on the back of the front seats can be used to store entertainment devices or personal items, especially handy on long journeys.

Technology

Inside the cabin, drivers are instantly welcomed by a host of convenient technology. In models after 2018, there is a twin-screen infotainment system located in the centre of the dashboard. If the car comes with the optional Technology pack, these screens will both be 10.1 inches, while as standard, the A6 comes with an 8.8-inch top screen and an 8.6-inch lower screen. The top screen displays navigation, media and vehicle controls, while the lower screen is reserved for controlling comfort and ventilation features, including climate control. The A6 comes with smartphone connectivity via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and you can also connect to the car’s audio system via Bluetooth or AUX.

These screens can be navigated through either the touchscreen or Audi’s voice recognition software, which has been developed to pick up more intuitive, natural commands. This makes navigating and activating controls on the system a lot easier as you don’t have to worry about operating it while driving through the touchscreen.

Audi has also included its Virtual Cockpit, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. This can display usual driving information such as speedometer, rev counter and fuel gauge, while also being able to display 3D map data when using the sat nav. You can also move the navigation information onto the central infotainment screen if that suits your driving habits better – the A6 offers a lot of customisation options to suit your needs.

Safety

Both the saloon and estate versions of the Audi A6 were awarded the full five stars by Euro NCAP. It scored well when it came to adult and child occupant protection, scoring 93% and 85% respectively. Scoring 76% on safety assist, the Audi A6 performed better than the BMW 5 Series and competes well with occupant protection scores of rivals such as the Jaguar XF and the BMW 5 Series.

Safety features on a used Audi A6 can include front and rear parking sensors, LED headlights, lane-departure warning, cruise control, ISOFIX points in the rear and autonomous emergency braking. Other safety features are available on certain trims and iterations such as traffic-sign recognition, automatic parking, high-beam assist, adaptive cruise assist which adapts to the speed of the car in front when you are cruising or in traffic. There is also a head-up display available, which projects important information such as speed limits and speedometer onto the windscreen so you don’t have to look away from the road.

Optional packs can be featured on used cars which add extra safety features such as active lane-keep assistance, 360-degree parking camera and cross-traffic detection.
