The Citroën C4 injects a touch of fun into all journeys. This compact hatchback (reclassified as a compact crossover SUV from 2020) is manufactured by the French automaker PSA Group and comes in five-door and three-door configurations. It served as the successor to the Citroën Xsara and came into production in September 2004.
The C4 has seen three generations to date – Mk1, first released in 2004, Mk2, manufactured between 2010 and 2019, and the newest Mk3. The 2020 Mk3 C4 shifted away from the standard C-segment hatchback/saloon body style and adopted a coupé SUV form. This marked a significant change in the model's design evolution.
In the 2023 Driver Power Survey, the Citroën C4 was awarded the title of ‘Car of the Year’ with an impressive score of 93.39% in the ‘Overall’ category. The C4 also placed highly for attributes including front-seat comfort, smartphone connectivity and child-friendly features.
The Citroën C4 is a practical contender in the compact/SUV market with rivals like the Ford Focus, Nissan Qashqai and Vauxhall Astra.
Citroën C4 updates and facelifts
Noticeable updates were introduced in the facelift of the Citroën C4 from 2008 to 2010. The front end showcased a more curved hood, a distinct bumper design, a wider grille positioned lower on the front and chrome accents around the fog lamps. The iconic double-chevron badge adopted a design reminiscent of the Citroën C5 with extended chrome lines between the headlights. Citroën also revamped the front and rear lights by incorporating clear lenses for a refined look.
The interior also saw enhancements. The infotainment system featured an optional new screen integrated into the central stack. Citroën also improved the quality of interior materials by upgrading elements such as door panels, seats and the dashboard. It retained the previous steering wheel design, which included stationary buttons at the centre and adjusted the instrument panel's backlighting from green to amber for improved visibility and aesthetics.
Most used C4 trims offer a selection of three petrol engines and two diesel options. The most common options are the 1.2-litre PureTech petrol and the fuel-efficient 1.5-litre BlueHDi diesel. Citroën collaborated with BMW to develop the drivetrain for the turbocharged 1.6-litre engines, including petrol and turbodiesel options. The vehicle is available with both manual and automatic gearbox choices.
Practicality and style of the car
Every used Citroën C4 has a 380-litre boot. When the rear seats are folded down, the capacity expands to 1,250 litres. With the seats folded, this model offers a larger boot capacity than the Peugeot 4008 which has a folded rear seat capacity of 1,219 litres. The C4’s generous capacity makes it highly practical and accommodates everything from groceries and luggage to sports equipment and daily essentials.
The Citroën C4 has a towing capacity of between 1,000kg and 1,200kg. As a result, it’s suitable for various towing needs, such as pulling small trailers or lightweight camper vans, or transporting equipment for outdoor activities.
Running costs
The Citroën C4 falls within insurance groups 9 to 22, making the model reasonably low cost to insure. Comparatively, the Vauxhall Astra and Nissan Qashqai are slightly higher, with the Qashqai falling within insurance groups 13 and 21 and the Astra sitting within groups 11 and 22.
The road tax for the C4 stands at £180 per year. The CO2 emissions fall from 114g/km to 133g/km which helps place the C4 in a moderate emissions bracket.
How a used Citroën C4 drives
Citroën’s 1.2-litre PureTech three-cylinder engine can be found across multiple Peugeot, Vauxhall and Citroën models, including the C4. This engine is offered in two configurations: 99bhp and 128bhp. Both options are equipped with a manual gearbox.
For the 128bhp variant, there's an optional eight-speed automatic gearbox. The base 99bhp PureTech petrol engine accelerates from 0 to 62mph in 11.2 seconds and offers early torque delivery, which eliminates the need for high-rev acceleration. It maintains CO2 emissions at 121g/km and reaches a top speed of 113mph.
In the robust 128bhp variant, the acceleration from 0 to 62mph is accomplished in 8.9 seconds when equipped with the six-speed manual gearbox. Opting for the eight-speed automatic transmission extends this time to 9.4 seconds. This version has an environmentally conscious profile with CO2 emissions at 116g/km. It can achieve a maximum speed of 120mph.
The 1.5-litre diesel engine delivers a robust 128bhp, taking it from 0 to 62mph in 9.5 seconds. The engine is paired with an automatic gearbox with CO2 emissions of 106g/km. It achieves a maximum speed of 119mph.
The Citroën C4 also comes in an electric variant known as the e-C4. It features a sole electric motor that propels the front wheels. With its nine-second 0-62mph acceleration time, the e-C4 benefits from instant torque delivery and electric propulsion, making it feel very quick off the mark.
The e-C4's electric powertrain delivers a total of 118bhp at 6,000 rpm with a maximum torque of 156Nm at 4,200 rpm. This power is channelled to the front wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox, resulting in an efficient and responsive front-wheel-drive configuration.

Both notify the driver of unintended lane departure and offer corrective steering input to realign the vehicle.
This model is also equipped with ISOFIX anchor points in the rear seats. They’re a useful feature for families, making attaching car seats easy and safe. It’s just one of the reasons why the Citroën C4 is an excellent choice for families seeking a reliable and spacious cruiser.
Forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking work together to warn the driver of impending collisions and can apply brakes autonomously. Finally, the adaptive cruise control system ensures a safe following distance by automatically adjusting the vehicle's speed according to the traffic flow up ahead.
The Citroën C4 was awarded an impressive adult occupant protection score of 80% and a child occupant score of 83% by the Euro NCAP collision test, scoring four out of a possible five stars. Citroën’s commitment to the safety of both drivers and passengers, and mitigating potential risks on the road, makes this model a secure and reliable choice.
