Citroën SpaceTourer updates and facelifts
Like its rivals – the Peugeot Traveller, Hyundai i800 and Ford Tourneo Connect – the SpaceTourer straddles the line between passenger car and commercial vehicle. It was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2016 and arrived in showrooms later that year.
The BlueHDI diesel powertrain was offered with several outputs to provide the level of power required for each vehicle length. There were three lengths available: the XS (4.6 metres), the M (4.95 metres) and the XL (5.3 metres). Five seats came as standard in all three, but buyers could specify seven, eight or nine seats according to their needs. There were also three trim levels to choose from: Feel, Flair and Business Edition.
The biggest update to the Citroën SpaceTourer occurred in 2020 when the ë-SpaceTourer was launched, extending the model’s appeal to eco-conscious buyers and ultimately replacing the diesel variant. Equipped with a 50kWh battery, it provided a greener solution to around-town driving while still supporting some long-distance drives. It is available only in M guise, offering eight seats in total.
Practicality and style of the car
The whole ethos of the Citroën SpaceTourer is optimum practicality. With a variety of lengths available, for which five, seven, eight or nine seats could be specified, it could be configured to accommodate a huge range of requirements. The XS version offers a minimum boot space of 397 litres, which is ample for groceries, weekend bags and other everyday items. With the seats down, it has a maximum capacity of 1,978, which will comfortably accommodate suitcases, golf clubs, tools or small items of furniture.
Select the M variant, and there’s a generous 507 litres available. Remove the third row of seats and capacity increases to 2,281 litres. In the XL variant, you’ll find 554 litres of space, increasing to 2,932 litres with the third-row seats removed. It’s this iteration that truly shows off the SpaceTourer’s commercial roots, enabling you to carry almost anything you choose.
It’s also a competent tow car. With a braked towing limit of 1,900kg when the car is fully loaded, there’s plenty of capability to pull a trailer or caravan.
Running costs
The SpaceTourer comes in a range of guises, which means insurance premiums vary considerably. While some variants occupy groups 11 to 18 out of 50 for insurance, others sit in groups 20 to 27, depending on the engine, trim and length of the vehicle you choose.
Road tax charges also depend on your selected model. Many SpaceTourers manufactured from 1 April 2017 onwards incur a standard £180 annual fee. Those that have an original list price of over £40,000, however, have a £390 surcharge added to this for the first five years of tax renewal. After this period, payments drop to the standard rates.
How a used Citroën SpaceTourer drives
The Citroën SpaceTourer offers a selection of diesel engines to suit your needs and preferences. The 1.6-litre unit is offered with outputs of either 94bhp or 113bhp. The 94bhp option develops 210Nm of torque and achieves a 0-62mph acceleration time of 15.9 seconds. Efficiency peaks at 51.4mpg.
The 113bhp version is both quicker and more efficient. Developing 300Nm of torque, it reaches 62mph from a standstill in 13.2 seconds and returns a combined fuel economy of between 54.3 and 55.4mpg.
For more power and swifter acceleration, choose one of the 2.0-litre BlueHDI diesel engines. The first has an output of 148bhp and 370Nm of torque, which takes you from 0-62mph in 11 seconds. Even with a full complement of passengers and luggage, it remains responsive. Fuel economy reaches between 50.4 and 53.3mpg on the combined cycle.
The most powerful option is the 177bhp unit, which develops 400Nm of torque. This also accelerates from 0-62mph in 11 seconds and returns a fuel economy of between 44.8 and 47.1mpg. Both these engines are available with the eight-speed EAT8 automatic gearbox.
If you’re opting for the ë-SpaceTourer, power comes from a 50kWh battery and 134bhp electric motor. This develops 260Nm of torque, achieving 0-62mph in 13.1 seconds and reaching a maximum range of 148 miles. Charging with a 7.4kW wallbox takes 7.5 hours.

Features you can expect in a Citroën SpaceTourer
Interior
The Citroën SpaceTourer is based on the Dispatch van and as such, it is accessed by conventional doors at the front and sliding doors at the rear. The outer middle row seats slide forward to allow access to the rear row too. The vehicle’s van-like proportions ensure that even the tallest occupants have plenty of headroom, while legroom depends on the configuration you choose. Select an M or XL variant to provide adult passengers with the most space while still benefitting from a generous boot. If you’re travelling with a young family, the XS will give you enough room in its five- or seven-seat version.
The SpaceTourer has ample storage for occupants too. There are cup holders, large pockets in the front doors, and a flip-top tray in the dash for stowing various items. The glovebox is refrigerated, making it ideal for stashing snacks and drinks.
Those choosing the Citroën SpaceTourer are likely to be prioritising practicality and durability over premium comfort. That said, the seats offer lots of support and chrome accents give the vehicle a more car-like feel. All variants have air conditioning to keep the cabin at a comfortable temperature too.
Technology
For your infotainment needs, the SpaceTourer provides a seven-inch touchscreen system that supports DAB radio, Bluetooth connectivity and Mirrorlink. This enables you to use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto to access smartphone apps such as Google Maps on the go. Stepping up to the Flair trim adds a sat nav system.
A selection of standard features are also fitted for your convenience, setting the SpaceTourer apart from its commercial vehicle roots. Cruise control enables you to maintain your chosen speed on the motorway and once you’ve reached your destination, parking and manoeuvering are made easier thanks to rear parking sensors.
Choose the ë-SpaceTourer and there are three driving modes to select from. Eco preserves battery life, maximising your range, while Power delivers a more responsive drive. Normal mode provides a happy medium between the two.
The model comes with hill start assist and a tyre pressure monitor as standard. Opt for the Flair trim and adaptive cruise control is added. This not only maintains your speed but also keeps a preset distance from the vehicle in front, ensuring you don’t get too close.
Safety
In its 2015 Euro NCAP test, the Citroën SpaceTourer received the maximum five-star rating. An adult occupant protection score of 87% and child occupant protection score of 91% demonstrate its ability to provide safe, secure travel for families and large groups alike. In addition to multiple airbags, you will find ISOFIX anchor points on all the rear seats for safely securing child seats.
