Stylish, practical and robust, the Dacia Duster is an iconic SUV that has maintained its popularity within an increasingly competitive market. Well known for its affordable price tag and adventurous spirit, the Duster was first introduced to the public at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show and has been turning heads in the UK since its 2012 launch.

Dacia Duster updates and facelifts

As an affordable vehicle, the Dacia Duster was named ‘Best Off-Roader’ by Parkers in 2019 and ‘Best Small SUV for Value’ by WhatCar? in 2023. Its muscular design is instantly recognisable out on the road, while its generous levels of equipment deliver excellent value for money. In an industry that’s developing at a rapid rate, the Duster stands out for its simple, effective and accessible approach to motoring that’s proved to be a hit for over a decade.

The Mk2 Duster, released in June 2018, built on the original version while retaining the rugged charisma we’ve come to know and love. A facelift for 2021 brought subtle design tweaks such as revised headlamps and a new grille design, as well as a new 8-inch infotainment screen. Four new trim levels were introduced too – Essential, Expression, Journey and Extreme. A used Dacia Duster will have one of a selection of petrol, diesel and Bi-Fuel engine options.

Practicality and style of the car

As a compact SUV, the Dacia Duster is as comfortable going off-the-beaten-track as it is navigating urban settings. It is light to drive, simple to manoeuvre and can fit easily into those awkward city parking spaces. It has a towing limit of 1,500kg with just the driver onboard, or 1,200kg if the car is fully laden. Whether you have a caravan or need a reliable SUV to tow a horsebox, a used Dacia Duster won’t disappoint.

Versatile and great for family adventures, the SUV comes with a spacious interior and a 445-litre boot, or 411 litres if you opt for a four-wheel drive model. This is better than average for a small SUV, with rivals such as the SEAT Arona and Nissan Juke offering around 400 litres. If you require additional storage space, simply fold down the rear seats to create a 1,614-litre boot or a 1,559-litre boot with four-wheel drive models.

Running costs

The practical Dacia Duster is also affordable to run. While insurance groups vary according to trim level, engine selection and whether you opt for a front- or four-wheel drive variant, the Duster never goes above an insurance group higher than 15 out of 50. Some petrol models, including the entry-level Expression trim, even sit in group 11 which is low for an SUV. As for tax, most used Dacia Duster models attract the flat rate of £155 a year (after year one), which is just under £13 a month.

The Dacia Duster has been named a great value car on multiple occasions, offering so much for so little money. Despite its accessible price tag, the Duster shares the same engines as other well-known car marques including the Nissan Qashqai and the Mercedes A-Class.

How a used Dacia Duster drives

Used Dacia Dusters are available with a wide range of petrol engines as well as a diesel option and LPG Bi-Fuel choices. The entry-level 1.0-litre TCe is offered across the range, produces 89bhp, returns 45.6mpg and is capable of 0-62mph in 13.1 seconds. A TCe 100 Bi-Fuel petrol/LPG engine is also available and uses the same engine, returning 44.1mpg. When running on LPG, there’s slightly more torque at lower revs, which makes the Duster even easier to drive.

There’s also a 1.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder option available with certain trims. This offers either 128bhp or 148bhp and can go from 0-62mph in 10.6 or 9.7 seconds respectively. Interestingly, the turbocharged engine is shared with many cars on the market including the Nissan Qashqai. Since its 2021 refresh, the Duster has also been available with a new top-end powertrain, a TCe 150 petrol engine paired with a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox and front-wheel drive. It offers top speeds of 124mph and 0-62mph acceleration of 9.7 seconds, with a fuel consumption of between 40.4 and 41.5mpg.

If it’s reliable 4x4 power you’re looking for, the Duster’s 1.5-litre dCi 115 with 113bhp won’t disappoint. This is only available with four-wheel drive models, accelerates from 0-62mph in just 10.2 seconds, returns 60.1mpg and features an AdBlue system, which helps to reduce emissions. The diesel unit is especially suited to towing caravans and long-distance motorway driving. The Duster features on our list of the best cars for towing caravans.

Features you can expect in a Dacia Duster

Interior

Step inside the Dacia Duster and discover a spacious, uncluttered interior complete with quality materials and hard-wearing plastics. The outer rear seats also feature ISOFIX points for child seats, making it ideal for growing families. Thanks to its raised stature, the Dacia also offers a high driving position, giving you a clear view of the road ahead and making it feel like you’re driving a much larger SUV.

Technology

The simplicity of the cabin is to be admired within an industry that typically loves cramming in as many technological features as possible. The Dacia Duster comes with clear analogue dials, a smart central touchscreen and a neat, concise switchgear as standard. The speed-limiter and cruise control buttons on the steering wheel are easy to operate, as are the audio controls mounted behind the steering wheel.

As for infotainment, the entry-level Essential trim boasts a DAB radio with Bluetooth, four speakers and a USB socket. Climb up the trim levels to Expression for an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The Journey trim adds sat nav, two extra speakers and four multi-view cameras.

Safety

The model comes with active features such as ABS brakes and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) as standard, while passive features include front and side airbags. Blind Spot Monitoring is offered on selected trims.

As well as offering a wide range of petrol, diesel and Bi-Fuel options, the Dacia Duster appeals to drivers looking for either a two or four-wheel drive. The latter of which is available on the top-spec Extreme trim. Most Dusters feature a six-speed manual gearbox, but the 148bhp petrol option comes with dual-clutch automatic transmission.

From 2021 onward you’ll find used Dacia Dusters can come with advanced technology such as rear parking sensors, Hill Start Assist, which prevents you rolling backwards when pulling away on an incline, Emergency Brake Assist and an ECO Mode for more efficient motoring.
