The Ford Ka was first introduced in 1996 and has seen several revisions since then. The Mk2 came out in 2008 and the Ka line was given a further overhaul in 2016, introducing the Ka+.

The Ka Mk1 had a distinctive visual style – small, round and plucky; it was a nimble little city car meant for navigating the winding suburban backstreets and congested inner-city lanes. With the Mk2 came a more recognisable shape in keeping with the Ford family style, being taller, longer and wider, with the high-swept headlights that would go on to become iconic in Ford cars to this day. Despite the size upgrade, the Ka is still the ideal city car – it's nimble, low-cost to run and maintain and easy to drive. At less than two metres wide and just over three metres long, getting this supermini city car in and out of the most challenging parking spots is easy.

The Mk2 three-door hatchback has two engines: a 1.2-litre petrol engine and a slightly rarer 1.3-litre diesel engine.

Practicality and style of the car

Boot space is adequate for personal belongings and the weekly shop, with a 224-litre capacity, topping the 185 litres offered by the Fiat 500 and 171 litres from the Honda e. On the Zetec trim and above, you can make use of the slip-fold seats and expand the boot space to a helpful 747 litres. At 3.5 metres long, the Ford Ka will easily slot into small spaces and narrow roads, while its higher roofline gives additional space to rear passengers.

Running costs

A great asset to the Ford Ka is its comparatively low cost and its appeal to first-time and/or young drivers. All trims sit in insurance group 3, alongside an annual road tax of £180.

How a used Ford Ka drives

There are two available engines on a Mk2 Ford Ka.

The 1.2-litre petrol engine delivers 70bhp and reaches 62mph in 13.4 seconds. With a top speed of 99mph, it can comfortably overtake on motorways. It returns 57.7mpg and generates 112g/km of CO2 emissions.

The 1.3-litre diesel engine was added later, delivering 75bhp and returning an impressive 68.9mpg while generating 109g/km of CO2. It also has a top speed of 99mph and achieves 0-62mph in 13.6 seconds.

Regardless of the engine, all Ford Kas are fitted with five-speed manual gearboxes with a high-mounted gear lever close to the steering wheel.

Features you can expect in a Ford Ka

Interior

The interior has taken on a far more sophisticated look compared to the original design. A neat central console and circular air vents make for a modern look across the Ka trims. You’ll find a wide variety of interior colours that give a playful and fun feel to the Ka. A sporty feel was introduced with a three-spoke steering wheel and backlit dials. Overall, comfort levels are very good and will please most drivers.

All trims have a shallow cupholder in front of the handbrake, useful for storing phones or small belongings. Wallets and bigger items can be placed in the sizeable glovebox, and door pockets easily enable you to store any extras, with the convenience of having them close by.

Technology

The Ford Ka is known for its compact nature, but that doesn’t mean it compromises on technology. All trims have a four-speaker radio/CD player with an MP3-compatible auxiliary jack, keeping all occupants happily entertained on all journeys. Bluetooth, USB connectivity and steering wheel audio controls are also available in the Studio trim and above. Drivers can easily control the audio system with controls nearby, helping them keep their focus and attention on the road.

Further advanced technology can be found in the Zetec trims and above, featuring a DAB radio and remote audio controls that enable passengers to enjoy a fulfilling entrainment system that suits everyone. You will also find a TFT screen built in with Ford SYNC that enables devices to connect to its system easily.

As well as technology for entertainment, the Studio also has features that ensure an enjoyable and safe driving experience, including electric front windows and door mirrors, hill start assist, remote central locking, a tyre deflation detection system and a trip computer. Some Kas may also have MyKey, which allows drivers to create a bespoke driving experience – you can alter settings to limit the Ka’s top speed, max audio volume, and much more.

So, in addition to its cosy overall design, Ford has incorporated a wide range of technology to ensure the Ka provides a safe, comfortable and enjoyable experience.

Safety

The Ford Ka was awarded four stars out of five in the Euro NCAP crash test, with an adult occupant score of four stars, a child occupant score of three stars and a pedestrian score of two stars. It has driver and passenger front airbags as standard across all trims and pelvis and thorax side airbags, while curtain airbags are optional.

Drive with ease of mind, knowing Ford has incorporated high-quality safety features to ensure you and all your passengers ride safely and are protected in the event of an accident. The Ford Ka includes ISOFIX anchors in the rear seats to accommodate child car seats. So even your littlest passengers, in all trims except the Studio, can travel safely in the Ford Ka.

Ford Ka Style

The Ford Ka Style has 15-inch steel wheels and serves as the Mk2 Ford Ka's entry-level trim. Keeping things simple, Ka Style puts the road in the palm of the driver's hand, with no unnecessary technological distractions. There are cloth seats, the rear seats fold down and the front windows are electric.

Ford Ka Studio

The Studio features body-coloured bumpers and a chrome upper grille for some added chic, as well as daytime running lights and front fog lamps. Your entertainment needs are met with an AM/FM radio with Bluetooth and USB connectivity. Hill start assist helps you out on steep inclines and a trip computer enables you to monitor fuel consumption and more on the go. A tyre deflation detection system warns you if your tyres start going flat and a tyre repair kit is included for emergencies. There are also ISOFIX child seat anchors present.

Ford Ka Zetec

This trim builds some helpful features to further improve the driving experience. The Zetec is the Ford Ka's most popular model and upgrades the entertainment to a DAB radio with a 4.2-inch screen, as well as cruise control to ease the strain of those long trips. Electric front windows can help cool down the car on hot days and if it's still too warm, manual air conditioning should do the trick. If it's cold and the windscreen is fogging up, the heated windscreen clears with impressive speed. The steering wheel is upgraded to a leather finish for a premium feel.

Ford Ka Titanium

The Titanium is the Ford Ka's top-level trim, with 16-inch wheels. Inside, there are plenty of upgrades, many of which can be added to the prior trims as optional extras. There is the advanced music pack, adding six speakers, a subwoofer, amplifier and a radio with a CD player and Bluetooth connectivity. The connectivity pack adds remote audio controls, Bluetooth phone pairing and a USB port.
