Jaguar overview
Founded in 1922 by William Lyons, Jaguar (pronounced JAG-yoo-uh) was originally the Swallow Sidecar Company, making motorcycle sidecars. It later began to develop passenger cars in association with Standard Motor Company, with many models bearing the Jaguar name. The business became Jaguar Cars in 1945 and merged with British Motor Corporation two decades later. In 1968 it merged with Leyland Motor Corporation to become British Leyland.
Ford acquired the brand in 1990 and in 2008 sold both Jaguar and Land Rover, which it had bought in 2000, to Tata Motors. Tata created Jaguar Land Rover as a wholly owned subsidiary, keeping the headquarters and factories of both brands in the UK.
Jaguar represents the pinnacle of British engineering, providing cars for British Prime Ministers since the 1970s and holding royal warrants from Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles. Its vehicles are renowned for being luxurious and meticulously designed, boasting the latest technological innovations. Jaguar’s first electric vehicle, the I-Pace, arrived in 2018 and the brand Rover announced in 2021 that all Jaguar cars made from 2025 onwards would be fully electric.
Popular Jaguar Models
The Jaguar XE has everything you could want from a four-door executive saloon. Its sharp styling gives it undeniable road presence, and it offers powerful performance and exceptional comfort. Since its launch in 2014, it has proved popular with car enthusiasts and families alike and is now more efficient than ever thanks to a choice of mild-hybrid diesel and petrol engines. Drivers can also choose front- or four-wheel-drive options.
Jaguar’s first all-electric SUV, the I-Pace was unveiled at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show and arrived in showrooms later that year. With generous cabin space, breath-taking performance and a range of up to 286 miles, it can handle any challenge, from a school run on busy urban roads to the rough terrain of a trip in the great outdoors. Since its launch, the I-Pace has sold over 60,000 units globally.
Introduced in 2016 the F-Pace was Jaguar’s first foray into the SUV market. This family-friendly, mid-size model boasts the brand’s trademark luxury and comes with both mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrain options, both of which help reduce emissions. There’s plenty of technology on board, as well as a raft of safety systems that earned it a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP. The F-Pace is Jaguar’s best-selling vehicle.
Jaguar’s smallest SUV, the E-Pace arrived in 2017. In a strongly contested segment, it stands out thanks to its sophisticated design, premium interior and plug-in hybrid engine option, which delivers a range of up to 38 miles. Updated in 2021, it’s ideal for getting around town and offers a high-quality and appealing solution to everyday motoring.
Manufacturer awards
Since becoming a subsidiary of Tata Motors in 2008, Jaguar Land Rover has won numerous awards, both as a group and for Jaguar models. In 2018, 21 of its female employees were recognised in Autocar’s Great British Women in the Car Industry, making up one-fifth of the Top 100 list. Three years later, the manufacturer was named Most Improved Manufacturer at the 2021 Business Car Awards, impressing judges with its commitment to hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicle production. It also won the Environmental, Innovation and Investment category at the 2023 Just Auto Excellence Awards. The accolade recognised the brand’s efforts to improve the environmental impact of its supply chain and implement navigation innovations for its vehicles.
Following its launch in 2018 the I-Pace was widely acclaimed, winning three awards at the 2019 World Car Awards. It received the World Car of the Year, World Car Design of the Year and World Green Car titles. This success followed the F-Pace’s triumph in 2017, when it won the World Car of the Year and World Car Design of the Year awards. In 2020, the E-Pace was ranked the top Small Premium SUV in the J.D. Power Initial Quality Survey. This widely recognised study is an industry benchmark for new vehicle quality.
