The Jaguar F-TYPE is perfect for those seeking an attractive sports car with a thrilling ride that doesn’t compromise on comfort and luxury.

The F-TYPE has been a formidable contender in a diverse market, going head-to-head with the likes of the Audi R8, BMW Z4 and even the Porsche 911 in its V8 variants. The F-TYPE is available in both coupé and convertible forms, offering a choice between four-cylinder, V6 and V8 engines, with rear-wheel or optional all-wheel drive.

Jaguar F-TYPE updates and facelifts

Unveiled at the 2012 Paris Motor show, the Jaguar F-TYPE entered UK showrooms in 2013. Initially replacing the grand tourer XK8, it revitalised Jaguar's sports car lineage. Its launch created excitement in the motoring world, and the F-TYPE soon won a slew of accolades, including the 2013 World Car Design of the Year award and the 2014 Auto Express Coupé of the Year.

The first update to the F-TYPE occurred in 2017, adding a new 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine to the existing lineup. There were also interior revisions, including redesigned seats and an improved infotainment system. The model then underwent a major facelift in 2020, boasting sharper styling, improved suspension, new 20-inch alloy wheels and upgraded technology.

Following updates in both 2017 and 2020, the Jaguar F-TYPE entered its final production year in 2024. To commemorate this, Jaguar introduced minor revisions and a new trim level in 2022 to mark 75 years of Jaguar sports cars.

Practicality and style of the car

The Jaguar F-TYPE’s cabin offers ample room for both driver and passenger, ensuring a comfortable ride. The model’s dimensions sit between the Porsche 718 Boxster and the larger Porsche 911. It is slightly taller than both these models, adding to the headroom available. Storage solutions include a glovebox, door bins and a central armrest that provides added space for smaller items.

The Jaguar F-TYPE is strictly a two-seater sports car, meaning its emphasis is on performance. However, that doesn’t mean it lacks in practicality. The coupé is equipped with a 336-litre load space, offering plenty of room for shopping and weekend bags.

Its luggage capacity is significantly greater than rivals such as the Porsche 718 Boxster and BMW Z4, which provide a total cargo volume of 275 litres and 281 litres respectively. The F-TYPE convertible edition has a 132-litre boot, and thanks to its fabric roof the space remains unimpeded when the roof is down.

Running costs

The Jaguar F-TYPE occupies insurance groups 41–50 out of 50, making it comparable to its rival, the Porsche 718 Cayman.

If you choose an F-TYPE manufactured before 1 April 2017, annual road tax is between £365–£695. Models that were produced thereafter are charged annually at £570 for the first five years that road tax is renewed. When this period is over, tax falls to the standard £180 per year.

How a used Jaguar F-TYPE drives

The Jaguar F-TYPE offers a streamlined engine lineup, starting with a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged Ingenium engine known as the P300. This unit delivers 296bhp and can accelerate from 0–62mph in 5.7 seconds. This engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Fuel economy is 29.4mpg on the combined cycle.

If you’re seeking more power, the F-TYPE offers two supercharged 5.0-litre V8 options. The first, named P450, produces 443bhp and propels the car from 0–62mph in 4.6 seconds. With a rear-wheel drive setup, combined fuel efficiency is 26.4mpg. When specified with all-wheel drive, economy dips marginally to 26.2mpg.

The most powerful option, the P575, delivers 567bhp and a 0–62mph time of just 3.7 seconds. Equipped with an all-wheel drive setup as standard, this unit matches the P450 for efficiency, returning 26.4mpg on the combined cycle.

For an added thrill, both V8 units come with a button on the dashboard that allows you to amplify the sound of the engine.

If you choose an earlier version of the Jaguar F-TYPE, the 3.0-litre supercharged V6 petrol engine is available. This comes in two variants, with the first producing 335bhp, which will take you from 0–62mph in 5.5 seconds. Fuel economy reaches a combined figure of 33.6mpg. The second has an output of 375bhp and achieves a 0–62mph time of 4.8 seconds. Efficiency peaks at 32.9mpg on the combined cycle.

Features you can expect in a Jaguar F-TYPE

Interior

The interior features a mix of high-quality materials, including soft-touch plastics and aluminium gearshift paddles, all contributing to a premium feel within the cabin. Later versions of the car also come with a digital instrument display, replacing the analogue dials. The dual-screen arrangement is accompanied by physical controls for climate settings, making adjustments easier while driving.

The car is equipped with supportive – and fully adjustable – sports seats that are both comfortable and durable, ensuring comfort even on longer drives. They are also set low to the ground to help accentuate the sports car feel.

Technology

The Jaguar F-TYPE comes equipped with a dual-screen setup that facilitates control over heating, audio, and navigation settings. This system is also compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, offering a seamless smartphone integration experience and enabling you to safely manage communications and media streaming on the go. A Meridian sound system comes fitted as standard for the ultimate in audio entertainment. Bluetooth connectivity and sat nav are also standard features across all models.

Later versions of the F-TYPE provide plenty of customisation options, with a 12.3-inch main instrument display featuring switchable designs. For example, you can opt for a large central rev counter for track use or more traditional twin dials for regular road driving. Parking the Jaguar F-TYPE is effortless too, with front and rear parking sensors complemented by a rear parking camera offering improved visibility.

Safety

With a strong emphasis on safety, the F-TYPE comes packed with a comprehensive suite of standard features across all models. This includes emergency braking, emergency brake assist, and a Driver Condition Monitoring system. The latter detects signs of fatigue and advises you to take a break when necessary.

Additional driving aids such as traction and stability control are standard, alongside cruise control with a speed limiter function and lane keep assist. Traffic sign recognition is another handy feature that identifies speed limits and displays them on the instrument cluster for your convenience. Optional safety features such as blind spot assist and a rear traffic monitor can also be found in a number of second-hand jaguar F-TYPE cars.

While the F-TYPE has not been assessed by Euro NCAP, it's worth noting that other Jaguar models have performed exceptionally well in safety tests, and the F-TYPE shares their robust aluminium structure. In fact, the roadster variant of the vehicle even includes fixed rollover hoops, contributing to its claim as the most rigid open-top car Jaguar has ever produced.
