Launched in 2008, the Jaguar XF represented a bold move from the British brand to update its image. Boasting up-to-date styling, responsive driving dynamics and the latest in advanced technology, it offered an attractive alternative to other prestige vehicles such as the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

Jaguar XF updates and facelifts

Available in Saloon, Sportbrake (estate) and high-performance XFR iterations, this first-generation model picked up a host of awards, including being voted Car of the Decade in 2011 by Auto Express readers. The Mk2 edition, arriving in 2015, continued this success, winning the Car of the Year title at the 2017 Auto Trader Awards. It maintained the original model’s luxurious nature and charismatic character while delivering even sharper looks and greater efficiency. As with the previous edition, 4-door Saloon and Sportbrake variants are available, as well as a choice of engines. Trim levels included Prestige, R-Sport, Portfolio and S.

The Mk2 XF was launched with two diesel engines and a supercharged petrol option. In 2017 a twin-turbo diesel joined the lineup, as well as an Ingenium petrol unit with three outputs. A facelift followed in 2021, bringing a fresh exterior look, updated interior and some improved technology, including a revised touchscreen system. The range was also slimmed down, with the S grade only available on rear-wheel drive cars. The other trims include R-Dynamic S, R-Dynamic SE and R-Dynamic HSE.

Practicality and style of the car

Despite its low roofline, the Jaguar XF is easy to access and provides generous headroom for even the tallest adults, whether they’re in the front or the rear. Three adults can sit in the back with enough shoulder room to stay comfy on short journeys, and legroom is ample. If you’re regularly transporting adults, the XF offers better interior space than the Audi A6 or BMW 5 Series. Infants can be carried securely too, thanks to ISOFIX anchor points on the outer rear seats.

The XF Saloon’s boot room is impressive too and is more generous than that of the A6 or 5 Series. At 540 cubic litres, it’s big enough for a set of golf clubs, a pushchair or a couple of suitcases, depending on your needs. If you require more space, some used editions of the XF feature the optional 40/20/40 split folding rear seats, which deliver a total capacity of 963 litres when folded down. It also gives you flexibility when carrying long loads. If you need more still, the XF Sportbrake offers 563–1,700 cubic litres, with a flat floor that makes for easy loading.

The Jaguar XF is an excellent tow car and won best-in-class at the Tow Car of the Year Awards in 2016. Petrol variants are able to tow a maximum braked weight of 1,900kg, while diesel variants can manage 2,000kg. That’s ample for pulling a large caravan or a horsebox.

Running costs

Choose a Mk1 Jaguar XF (2008-2015) and insurance groups range between 33–49 out of 50. In the Mk2 (2015 onwards) premiums reduce. This edition occupies groups 25–42, which makes insurance costs less than those of the Audi A6 (groups 30–47) and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class (groups 28–49).

Road tax differs according to your choice of model year and engine. While some variants only incur an annual charge of £20–35, those produced after April 2017 and with a list price of over £40,000 are charged at £570 for the first five years from the first renewal date. Thereafter, tax drops to the standard £180 per year.

How a used Jaguar XF drives

There’s a wide selection of engine options for the Jaguar XF. The 2.2-litre diesel that was available at launch comes with outputs of 161bhp and 380Nm of torque or 177bhp and 430Nm and offers exceptionally efficient driving with low emissions.

The 161bhp option returns 57.7mpg while going from 0-62mph time of just 8.7 seconds. Opt for the 177bhp variant and this drops to eight seconds while returning up to 55.4mpg. Both are available with manual or eight-speed automatic transmission, with the latter providing a smooth, relaxed drive.

There is also a 3.0-litre V6 diesel with an impressive 296bhp and 700Nm of torque. It’s effortlessly fast, reaching 62mph from a standstill in just 6.4 seconds, and returns up to 47.1mpg.

Jaguar XF models manufactured after 2021 will come with a 2.0-litre mild hybrid option - the D200 engine. This comes with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The former is the fastest of the two, getting from 0-62mph in 7.6 seconds, and both achieve a top speed of 143mph. It returns up to 57.2mpg.

A 2.0-litre petrol engine is available with two outputs. The P250 delivers 247bhp and a rear-wheel drive configuration, while the P300 produces 296bhp and has all-wheel drive. They accelerate from 0-62mph in 6.9 and 6.1 seconds respectively. These engines return between 32.8mpg and 35.3mpg.

There’s also a 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine available on early Mk2 models. This produces 375bhp and accelerates from 0-62mph in just 5.3 seconds. It returns up to 34mpg.

Features you can expect in a Jaguar XF

Interior

From the moment you step into the Jaguar XF, it’s clear you’re somewhere special. Not only are the materials and surfaces of a high quality, there are also elegant touches that give it a unique character. For example, the start button pulses with a red light until it’s pressed. Afterwards, the air vents rotate and open, and the gear lever rises out of the transmission tunnel on automatic models.

In addition to offering space for five adults, there’s a good level of storage for everything you and your passengers need. Cupholders in both the front and rear provide a secure space for coffee cups or water bottles, while the large door bins and glovebox can accommodate other belongings. There’s also a cubby for your sunglasses by the rear-view mirror.

All trims come with an intuitive 11.4-inch Pivi Pro touchscreen infotainment system complete with Bluetooth and satellite navigation. The menus are easy to use and pairing your smartphone via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is straightforward. The sound quality is excellent – but audiophiles may prefer a used model that features the upgraded Meridian system.

Technology

The Jaguar XF features technology for every need, from comfort and convenience features to driver aids. All trims offer electrically adjustable seats, which make finding the perfect driving position simple, as well as a powered tailgate for easy loading when you’ve got bulky items to pack. Effortless motorway driving is afforded by cruise control, and thanks to parking sensors, manoeuvres are never a challenge.

R-Dynamic SE variants offer even more. Memory front seats ensure that if someone else drives your car you can revert to your ideal settings with the touch of a button. Meanwhile, keyless entry means there’s no need to search your bag or pockets for your keys in order to unlock and start the car.

Safety

In its Euro NCAP test in 2015, the Jaguar XF was awarded a full five stars. The adult occupant protection score of 92% and child protection score of 84% are excellent, and a host of technologies are fitted as standard to keep everyone safe. Autonomous emergency braking, electronic stability control and lane departure warning are installed, as well as front and side airbags.
