Land Rover overview
Land Rover (pronounced ‘LAN-Droh-vuh’) began as a type of vehicle produced by the Rover Company. The name was first given to a utilitarian SUV with four-wheel-drive capability, designed by Maurice Wilks in 1948. In 1951, Land Rover was granted a Royal Warrant by King George VI. As time went on, Land Rover became an established brand, adding the Range Rover to its lineup in 1970. Following almost two decades as a subsidiary of British Leyland, BMW acquired Land Rover in 1994. Although, this ownership was short-lived. Six years later in 2000, the Rover Group was broken up and the brand was sold to the Ford Motor Company.
Seven years later, Ford announced its intention to sell both Land Rover and Jaguar Cars. Tata motors then purchased both Land Rover and Jaguar Cars in 2008. It was then that Jaguar Land Rover Limited was established as British-registered subsidiary. Land Rover cars are still primarily produced in the UK today. Land Rover cars are known for their rugged styling and exceptional off-road capability. They are also known for their Range Rover models. Range Rovers provide a more luxurious option for those driving mainly on-road. All models produced by Land Rover offer high levels of comfort and equipment. Elevating the driving experience above that offered by competitors.
Popular Land Rover models
The Land Rover Range Rover Evoque arrived to the market in 2011. It's a stylish and luxurious model which has since become the brand's best-seller. The Evoque offers drivers a comfortable ride and a sumptuous interior. It also retains the ability to tackle challenging road conditions with ease. Both three- and five-door body styles are available. There is also a convertible option for those who enjoy top-down driving.
The Land Rover Discovery Sport is a 4x4 with exceptional off-road capability and towing capacity. The Discovery Sport launched in 2014. The model offers drivers seven-seat practicality and punchy performance. It's an ideal choice for families, outdoor enthusiasts and keen caravaners alike. Land Rover introduced mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains to the model in 2019.
The Land Rover Discovery first launched in 1989. Since then it has evolved through five generations. It remains a capable and luxurious 4x4 to this day. The Discovery has seven seats and impressive fuel economy, a great choice for growing families. There is also an innovative Terrain Response system which allows the driver to choose from a preset list of terrain modes. The Discovery is one of the most popular SUVs on the market.
Launched in 2005, the Range Rover Sport is an agile yet spacious model that can handle on and off-road driving with ease. Its premium interior and suite of advanced technologies ensure a comfortable experience. The model is available with five or seven seats. In 2017, Land Rover offered a plug-in hybrid powertrain on the model for the first time.
Manufacturer awards
Since 2008, Jaguar Land Rover has won a variety of awards, both for individual vehicles and as a brand. Land Rover's commitment to innovation and sustainability was recognised at the 2023 Just Auto Excellence Awards. It won the Environmental, Innovation and Investments category. This was for the manufacturer's attempts to improve the environmental impact of its supply chain, while implementing new technology into its navigation systems. The brand is aiming to reach carbon neutrality across its supply chain, products and operations by 2039.
Following its launch in 2011, the Range Rover Evoque won Auto Express’ coveted Car of the Year Award for that year. It was subsequently named Best SUV/Crossover at the Women’s World Car of the Year Awards (2019) and Best Family SUV at the What Car? Awards (2020). Other model wins include the Best Luxury Car award and Best Large Premium SUV award for the Range Rover and Defender respectively at the 2022 Auto Express Awards.
