First introduced in 2017, the Land Rover Range Rover Velar is an SUV that demands the utmost attention. Set within the iconic manufacturer’s lineup between the Evoque and Sport trims, the Range Rover Velar is a hugely desirable model that compares favourably to ever-popular vehicles such as the BMW X6, the Porsche Macan and the Mercedes-Benz GLE. The name 'Velar' has historical significance for the marque, dating back to the original Range Rover prototypes of the late 1960s.
The Velar offers a more dynamic aesthetic than other models in the Land Rover range. Smooth bodywork is accentuated by subtle elements such as retractable door handles, while the rakish roofline and gentle curves add to the aerodynamic nature of the model.
The Velar has been widely praised for its design, receiving the title of ‘Most Beautiful Car on the Planet’ at the 2018 World Car Awards. It was also awarded ‘Best Coupé SUV’ by What Car? in 2020.
The vehicle comes with a range of engine options, including petrol, diesel and hybrid, and is available in four trim levels – S, Dynamic SE, Dynamic HSE and Autobiography.
Range Rover Velar updates and facelifts
The Range Rover Velar received its first update since its launch in early 2023, which included a new, more contemporary grille, a lower rear bumper and a redesigned touchscreen display. Amazon Alexa was also built in, and over-the-air updates were introduced.
Practicality and style of the car
The Range Rover Velar has 513 litres of boot space with the rear seats up, making it competitive with rivals like the Audi Q5 and Mercedes GLC which both have 550 litres of space. With the rear seats folded down, this expands to 1,250-litres of space.
The Range Rover Velar is an excellent tow car. Depending on the engine variant it has a maximum braked capacity of 2,000–2,500kg.
Running costs
When it comes to running costs, the Land Rover Range Rover Velar is a competitive choice. Most variants fall into insurance groups 31-48 out of 50, with only a couple reaching group 50. In comparison to the BMW X6, which occupies groups 41-50.
For the first five years of tax renewal, the Range Rover Velar has a surcharge of £390 , making for an annual cost of £560–570. However, after that period road tax drops to the standard rate for the vehicle’s engine – £170 per year for PHEV variants and £180 for those with a combustion engine.
How a used Range Rover Velar drives
The Range Rover Velar's engine lineup was revised after its launch to offer a variety of options tailored to different driving needs. Starting with diesel options, the entry-level D200 2.0-litre turbo diesel offers 201bhp, making it more than capable for everyday motoring. However, if you’re seeking more power and refinement, the six-cylinder D300 turbodiesel is a better choice, boasting 295bhp and a 0-62mph time of just 6.1 seconds, compared to the D200's 7.8 seconds. Both offer respectable efficiency, with the D200 returning a combined fuel economy of 44.9mpg. The D300 peaks at 38.2mpg when paired with mild hybrid technology.
If you’re more of a petrol enthusiast, the P250 serves as the perfect entry point. This four-cylinder turbo petrol engine produces 246bhp and achieves 0-62mph in 7.1 seconds. It also returns a combined efficiency of 30.5mpg. The higher-powered engines are the P300 and P380. The former can reach 0-62mph in as little as 6.0 seconds and returns a combined fuel economy of 29.3mpg. The latter delivers exceptional acceleration from 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds and 30.1mpg on the combined cycle.
The Range Rover Velar also offers hybrid engine options. The P400 mild hybrid, delivers a 0-62mph time of 5.1 seconds and 394bhp thanks to its 3.0-litre straight-six engine. Efficiency peaks at 28.8mpg for this variant.
The P400e plug-in hybrid offers a more economical alternative without sacrificing performance. This edition combines a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a 141bhp electric motor to produce a total of 398bhp. What’s more, the P400e can also operate solely on battery power at motorway speeds and can cover up to 40 miles if driven conservatively. Combined efficiency stands at 125.7mpg.

Features you can expect to find in a Range Rover Velar
Interior
The Range Rover Velar's minimalist design is complemented by features like heated and cooling seats with massage functionality, a heated steering wheel, ambient lighting and climate control.
There’s ample room in the front and rear seats, enabling up to five adults to travel in comfort . Some used Range Rover Velar variants also come with a panoramic sunroof.
Cabin storage includes a generously sized glovebox and a useful cubby area under the central armrest. Door bins are a practical size too, and the Velar is equipped with cleverly designed storage spaces that align with its minimalist interior. For instance, a hidden cup holder reveals itself when you press the Land Rover badge near the gear knob, and there's additional storage space behind the ten-inch touchscreen on the dash.
One of the standout features of the Velar's interior is its focus on technology. Except for the entry-level 'S' trim, all Velars come standard with a three-screen setup. This includes a 12.3-inch display in front of the driver and Land Rover's Pivi Pro System featuring a ten-inch touchscreen in the centre of the dash. Upon ignition, this screen tilts forward up to 30 degrees, adding a touch of elegance and driver-focused convenience to its functionality. Below this is another ten-inch display that replaces the traditional facia buttons.
The interface is primarily button-free, relying on two rotary controls to navigate through various menus. These controls allow you to select modes for the Terrain Response system and adjust the air conditioning. Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard features, enabling you to effortlessly manage communications on the go.
Technology
The Range Rover Velar comes with innovative technological systems such as an autonomous emergency braking system, electronic traction control, hill descent control, hill launch assist and dynamic stability control. You can also benefit from such intelligent measures as a reversing camera, front and rear parking sensors, lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition and a driver fatigue monitor.
Safety
Safety is another strong suit for the Velar, as evidenced by its five-star rating from Euro NCAP. It scored an impressive 93% in adult occupancy, bolstered by an 85% child occupant score and a 72% safety assist result. For families, the Velar offers ISOFIX mounting points on the outer rear seats, so infants and toddlers can be carried securely.
