Since 2015, the Mazda CX-3 has been leading the small SUV pack. With the iconic sleek and angular styling found across much of the Mazda family, the CX-3 is bound to turn heads. Inside, you're treated to the same level of luxury synonymous with the brand.

Mazda was an early contender in the small SUV market, and while competition has increased over time, the CX-3 still confidently stands up to newer rivals. In 2016, it won Best Compact SUV at the Fleet News Awards and it’s picked up handfuls of other international accolades over the years.

Mazda CX-3 updates and facelifts

After the 2018 facelift, Mazda added extra sound-dampening to the cabin to reduce engine and road noise when cruising at high speeds, making for quieter journeys. In the 2018 facelift, the handbrake was replaced with an electric version, freeing up space in the central console and making the front seats feel that much roomier.

The CX-3's production ended in 2019, being replaced by the CX-30 as Mazda's most affordable SUV. Despite that, a used Mazda CX-3s is still an impressive car to own. All trim options come with plenty of gadgets, and the striking visuals make it one of the most attractive SUVs on the road.

There are petrol and diesel engines available with the Mazda CX-3, pleasing a wide range of drivers.

Practicality and style of the car

The boot has 350 litres of space, which is average for its class, coming between the SEAT Arona's 400 litres and the Hyundai Kona's 332 litres. It'll comfortably fit the weekly shop or luggage for a weekend away. The adjustable boot floor can fit smaller items under the removable board, which houses the Bose subwoofer if you choose the CX-3 Sport Nav trim. With the rear seats folded flat, you get 1,260 litres of storage.

The most powerful configurations of the Mazda CX-3 can tow up to a maximum of 1,200kg, perfect for exploring with a medium-sized caravan or pulling small, fully-laden trailers. There are ISOFIX child seat anchors in the rear seats for safely strapping in the little ones.

Running costs

A Mazda CX-3 is great value for money. It falls between road tax bands B and G, meaning the cost starts from as little as £20 per year (for pre-2017 1.5l options) and goes no higher than £180 (the price for most CX-3s). The insurance groups are between 13 and 19 (out of 50), depending on the trim level you choose. Official figures claim the CX-3 returns between 40.4mpg and 70.6mpg.

How a used Mazda CX-3 drives

With fuel saving in mind, Mazda opted not to have turbocharged engines, meaning every CX-3's engine is naturally aspirated. The greater fuel efficiency doesn’t impact your driving experience, though. The CX-3 rides and overtakes comfortably on the motorway with plenty of power, whichever engine you choose.

The 2.0-litre petrol engine has two options for output. The first choice comes with 118bhp, which was increased to 119bhp with the 2018 facelift. This variant achieves 0-62mph in 9 seconds, reaching a maximum speed of 119mph. It returns around 45.6mpg and generates 141g/km of CO2 emissions. The more powerful 147bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine gets from 0-62mph in 8.8 seconds and manages a maximum speed of 124mph. It returns around 40.4mpg and generates 160g/km of CO2 emissions.

Both choices generate an impressive 270Nm of torque at just 1,600rpm, giving quick access to the power and making changing up through the gears quick and smooth. With the power available at lower revs, the engine is quiet even as it speeds along the roads. Both power outputs get access to six-speed manual and automatic gearboxes and are front-wheel drive.

There is also a 1.8-litre diesel engine generating 114bhp, reaching 62mph in 9.9 seconds on its way to a maximum of 114mph. It returns around 64.2mph while generating 114g/km of CO2. This engine has a six-speed manual transmission and four-wheel drive to ensure a comfortable ride when your travels take you off the beaten track.

Features you can expect in a Mazda CX-3

Interior

Complementing the beautiful exterior of the Mazda CX-3, the interior is equally impressive. The seats have a sporty, low feel, which is uncommon for many SUVs that favour raised seating positions. They’re comfortable and supportive, with cloth upholstery in all but the top-level trim, which has leatherette upholstery. Drivers of all sizes should be able to comfortably drive the CX-3, with a steering wheel that adjusts for rake and reach.

Technology

The central console will be familiar to previous Mazda owners. It is dominated by a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment display present in all trims after the 2018 facelift. As you explore more premium trims, the Mazda CX-3 gains high-tech features like a digital speedometer and heads-up display, keyless entry, heated front seats, Bluetooth connectivity, a reversing camera, LED headlights and rear lights.

Cruise control, lane departure alerts, automatic wipers and automatic lights help the driver focus on driving in all conditions. The top-level Sport Nav + trim features a Bose audio system specific to the CX-3, upgrading the sound quality for maximum enjoyment while on the go.

Safety

The CX-3 scored four out of five stars on the 2015 Euro NCAP safety test, the fourth-highest score in its class for the year it was tested. It scored 85% for adult occupancy protection and 79% for child occupancy protection.

Trims available on the Mazda CX-3

Mazda CX-3 SE Nav +

Since the 2018 facelift, there are three trims available on the Mazda CX-3. The SE Nav + is the entry-level trim and comes with 16-inch alloy wheels. On the soft-touch dash, you'll find a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity, USB and AUX ports, as well as DAB radio. The steering wheel and gear lever are leather for a premium feel. Hill hold assist helps manage setting off on steep roads, while cruise control makes motorway driving smooth.

This trim features electric windows all round, and there’s manual air conditioning to help keep you cool. The door mirrors are electrically adjustable and can be folded in, helping avoid damage if you're parked on the roadside or even shaving off a couple of inches when fitting through particularly narrow spaces. There are two ISOFIX child seat mounts in the back.

Mazda CX-3 SE-L Nav +

The SE-L Nav + gains some premium extras to enhance your experience. Rear-tinted glass gives rear passengers some privacy and helps to keep the sun off. The front seats are heated, and automatic climate control keeps things comfortable inside. The addition of automatic lights, automatic wipers, smart city braking, and lane departure warnings mean, come rain or shine, you can be confident the CX-3 will be easy and reassuring to drive. Once the drive is over, parking sensors can help guide you into a space or garage.

Mazda CX-3 Sport Nav +

The Sport Nav + is the top-spec trim for the CX-3. The Sport Nav + adds the final touches to complete the luxury package Mazda is known for, starting with 18-inch gunmetal alloy wheels. The headlights have been given a classy overhaul with this trim, with LED front headlights as well as an Adaptive Front Light system.

On the back are signature LED rear lights, giving the CX-3 its definitive mark on the road. The parking sensors are joined by a rear-parking camera displayed on the 7-inch display. Meanwhile, the analogue speedometer is replaced by a digital one along with a heads-up display, giving the cabin a high-tech feel. There is a Bose audio system with the Sport Nav + and keyless entry.
