The SEAT Ateca is a mid-sized, crossover SUV that competes with the ŠKODA Karoq, Peugeot 3008 and Nissan Qashqai when it comes to offering cabin space and practicality. The Ateca stands out from the competition thanks to its combination of technology, engine performance and practicality.

SEAT Ateca updates and facelifts

The Ateca was first released in 2016, making it one of the most recent entries into the crossover SUV space. But thanks to a facelift in 2020 that tweaked its bumpers, lights and front grille, the Ateca has marked itself as one of the best performing and most attractive cars in its segment, making it a desirable model for families and those looking to cover long journeys.

The Ateca is available in a range of trim levels, each offering different technological enhancements and upgrades. It also comes with a range of efficient petrol or diesel engines. Among them, its punchy diesel engine combined with 4WD was singled out for a What Car? towing award in 2021 in the 1,550–1,699kg category. The Ateca also came top in the Best Family SUV for less than £20,000 category – scooping Car of the Year for 2018 at the What Car? awards. For this reason, a used Ateca is one of the most popular cars in the compact crossover segment.

Practicality and style of the car

Practicality is an integral part of the SEAT Ateca’s appeal. Standing at 4,381mm long, 1,841mm wide and up to 1,625mm high, the Ateca is slightly taller than the ŠKODA Karoq and matches the Peugeot 3008 for size.

Boot space in the Ateca is good with a sizable 510 litres of boot space on offer with the rear seats up. By folding them down, this can be expanded significantly to an impressive 1,604 litres of space – larger than the Peugeot 3008’s approximately 1,482 litres and more than enough room for several large suitcases. The Ateca’s rear bench features 60/40 folding seats with handy release levers in the boot making it easy to drop the seats when loading. There’s also a ski hatch for thinner, longer loads.

When it comes to cabin space, all passengers have a good amount of room. There is lots of head and legroom throughout, with even the tallest passengers having lots of space. All doors come with deep door bins and a handy glovebox for small items.

The Ateca lives up to its family values too, with ISOFIX mounts on both the outer rear seats.

The SEAT Ateca has a maximum braked towing capacity of 2,100kg, with most engines capable of towing around 1,500kg – perfect for a trailer or small caravan.

Running costs

The Ateca’s practicality also extends to its running costs. Most entry-level trims for a used SEAT Ateca fall into an insurance group ranging from as low as 8 all the way through to 24 for higher bhp engines and flagship trims. Road tax for the Ateca is typically between £35 and £180, so the Ateca offers good value as well as great practicality.

How a used SEAT Ateca drives

Depending on the generation and trim, a used SEAT Ateca is available in a range of petrol or diesel engines. In the entry-level petrol range, there is a 1.0-litre, 110bhp engine which can go from 0-62mph in 11.4 seconds and has a fuel consumption of 46mpg.

The 1.4-litre engine generates 147bhp and can go from 0-62mph in just over 8.2 seconds. This variant also delivers 52.3–53.3mpg.

The 1.5-litre engine also produces 147bhp, can accelerate to 62mph in just over nine seconds and has a range of around 42.8–45.6mpg.

Finally, there is a 2.0-litre, 187bhp engine which has a range of up to 33.6–35.3mpg and can go from 0-62mph in around 6.2 seconds.

There is an equally good range of diesel engines, including two 2.0-litre options and a 1.6-litre. The latter produces 113bhp, delivering 61mpg, while the 2.0-litre options produce up to 190bhp and offer up to 55.4–56.5mpg.

Depending on the generation and trim of a SEAT Ateca, these engines may be paired with a few different transmission options. These include a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission for smooth gear shifting.

Features you can expect in a SEAT Ateca

While a newer model in the crossover SUV class, the SEAT Ateca has got the key features right from its first launch. From the outside, it has a distinctive aesthetic and design that manages to be both quite minimal while also hinting at a sportier feel. In newer generations, the front grilles and bumpers further enhance its good looks.

Interior

This minimalist design carries on through to the cabin. You’ll find a pleasant glossy finish in most interiors, with plastic switches and buttons kept to a minimum. The multi-functional steering wheel is nicely sized, easy to grip and free of unnecessary buttons. Additionally, certain Ateca trims feature a 12-inch digital driver’s cockpit. This screen can display all your car’s vital information right in front of you.

Technology

Depending on the trim, your SEAT Ateca may come with either a 5-inch or 8-inch touchscreen on pre-facelift models or an 8.25-inch or 9.2-inch display on post-facelift models. This display is easier to customise and use compared to rivals’ offerings, offering a simple and quick way to adjust sound settings and music selection, and more. The system also supports smartphone integration, with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

The SEAT Ateca is packed with features in terms of technology, with the facelift in 2020 further enhancing the car’s safety.

Safety

These safety features help the Ateca achieve the full five-star rating from Euro NCAP. In terms of adult occupant, the Ateca scores 93%, with a child occupant score of 84%. Across the model years, many entry-level standard features include a range of airbags, autonomous emergency braking, tiredness recognition system and traction control. Certain trims also add to these features with even more safety enhancements. In the Euro NCAP crash tests, the Ateca performed noticeably better at protecting a six-year-old child sitting in the back compared to the Škoda Karoq.
