Grey Seat Ibiza from the front

With a compact size and a variety of different engines available, the Ibiza is perfectly suited to city driving and navigating into those tight parking spots. It is highly practical by design and competes with other models, such as the Ford Fiesta, Renault Clio and Mazda 2, to offer the best value supermini on the market.

The Ibiza’s long-term adaptability and award-winning appeal make it a mainstay in this class. Winning Best Supermini at the 2017 Auto Express awards and the Best Small Car at the Business Motoring Awards 2022, the Ibiza’s appeal remains as strong as ever.

SEAT Ibiza updates and facelifts

Grey Seat Ibiza from the rear

First launched in 1985, the SEAT Ibiza is one of the enduring supermini vehicles in its category. It is now in its fifth generation, with the Mk5 launching in 2017 and given a facelift in 2021. The Ibiza’s long-lasting popularity has made it one of the best-selling cars in the SEAT line-up.

And with multiple trim levels offering an expansive range of features to suit your needs, the SEAT Ibiza’s style and functionality make it a leading model in the B vehicle segment. It also comes in a choice of body types, from a practical 5-door-only variant for the Mk5 to a 3-door, 5-door or estate variant for the Mk4.

Practicality and style of the car

Grey Seat Ibiza from the side

Released in 2017 as a 5-door model only, the Mk5 is the most spacious Ibiza to date. With a length of 4,059mm, height of 1,444mm and width of 1,780mm, the Mk5 is 376mm longer, 49mm taller and 170mm wider than the Mk1. Compared to the 2008-2017 Mk4, the Mk5 is 2mm shorter. But with a wheelbase of 2,564mm – 95mm longer than the Mk4 – there is also 35mm more legroom in the cabin adding to its comfort.

While the Mk5 is the largest Ibiza yet, it remains a more compact model than its rivals helping it stay true to its nimble design. The Ford Fiesta’s length of 4,068mm is 9mm longer while the Renault Clio’s height of 1,448mm, length of 4,063mm and width of 1,448mm is also larger.

With the rear seats up, most used SEAT Ibizas have 355 litres of boot space. This can be increased to 1,165 litres with the rear seats down, which is more than the Ford Fiesta’s 1,093 litres, Renault Clio’s 1,069 litres and Mazda 2’s 950 litres, placing it among the largest in the supermini class. For added storage practicality, the Ibiza has a removable boot floor which is handy for storing items flat.

The Ibiza has a maximum braked capacity of up to 1,100kg, which is enough for some small caravans and trailers.

Even with a full car, the Ibiza offers a good amount of room. The Mk5’s larger wheelbase means there’s enough legroom for three tall passengers in the rear. There’s also good knee and headroom throughout – a standout feature for a supermini. Two ISOFIX points in the rear seats mean there’s no hassle installing children’s seats. And with door bins and a glovebox all helping keep the cabin tidy, it’s easy to avoid clutter on long journeys.

Running costs

The SEAT Ibiza’s excellent running costs are a key part of its appeal. Its insurance groups range from 2 to 19, depending on the trim and engine, for a selection to suit every pocket. It also qualifies for an annual road tax rate of £180.

How a used SEAT Ibiza drives

A used Ibiza comes with a number of petrol and diesel engines in its range. Many feature an entry-level MPI petrol engine that produces 79bhp. It accelerates from 0-62mph in 14.7 seconds with a quoted range of 57.6mpg.

There is also a turbocharged three-cylinder TSI option, which will be configured to produce either 94bhp or 108bhp. The 94bhp engine can accelerate from 0-62mph in 10.9 seconds and achieves 64.2mpg. The 108bhp engine can achieve 0-62mph in 10.3 seconds while offering a fuel economy of 52.3mpg. These petrol engines are hushed and deliver steady and tight driving that enhances their fuel efficiency.

Some used Ibizas may instead come with a diesel engine, often a 95bhp, 1.6-litre TDI engine. It delivers a quoted 74.3mpg and can accelerate from 0-62mph in 13.3 seconds.

A used SEAT Ibiza can come with a manual or a dual-clutch, direct-shift automatic transmission. This DSG transmission system uses a torque converter instead of a clutch pedal to deliver consistent power delivery. In manual, the Ibiza often features a five or six-speed gearbox, while in automatic, it is often a six-speed gearbox.

Features you can expect in a SEAT Ibiza

The Ibiza’s compact size and close-to-the-road driving position are complemented by the distinct exterior design of the car. While the Mk1 and Mk2 Ibiza have a squared body, the later Mk4 and Mk5 iterations feature rounded edges and a low front and rear bumper for a modern and sleek design.

Some used Ibizas also feature a bigger, sportier front grille while a large, slanted windshield offers a wide view of the road as well as looking stylish. The Ibiza’s narrow headlights and creases along the bonnet also add to its appealing style. To stand out on the road, the Ibiza can come in a variety of metallic paint finishes, including Desire Red, Tech Grey, Nevada White and Midnight Black to match your tastes.

Interior

Step into the cockpit and you’ll be rewarded with a masterfully designed cabin. Soft touch materials feature across the dashboard and buttons, with hard-wearing plastics included on surfaces in out-of-reach spots. In the Mk5 Ibiza, leather trimming runs across the multi-functional steering wheel and seats for added comfort. Usually available in an all-black interior, the Mk5 has red highlights around the air conditioning grilles for a welcome colour contrast.

Technology

You’ll also have a range of smart technology to enhance your drive. Some used Ibizas will have a digital display where the instrument cluster sits, which hosts SEAT’s Digital Cockpit and displays important drive information including drive distance, speed and engine performance. It is also brightly lit for ease-of-use when driving at night.

You can also find an 8.25-inch or 9.2-inch touchscreen display set on the centre console. This screen will feature the SEAT Ibiza’s infotainment system, which offers Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and can include sat nav, media connectivity and hands-free phone support depending on trim. Screen controls can be found on the multi-functional steering wheel featured in some Ibizas, which also includes soft-touch buttons for easy navigation without losing focus on the road. This screen can also come with SEAT CONNECT, which allows you to directly connect your smartphone to the screen to see important drive information and enable smartphone mirroring.
