Used Suzuki Jimny cars for sale
The Suzuki Jimny is a compact 4x4 off-roader, originally launched in 1970.
All versions are powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine with either a manual or automatic gearbox and Suzuki's ALLGRIP PRO four-wheel-drive system. This allows you to select front-wheel drive for normal driving to help save fuel.
A low-range transfer gear further enhances off-road performance. This allows the Jimny to crawl over extremely challenging terrain like sand or thick mud at a lower speed than conventional cars.

The Suzuki Jimny is a compact off-roader and rival to the Jeep Renegade, Dacia Duster and Mini Countryman. This three-door 4x4 also makes for a more affordable, smaller alternative to the Land Rover Defender. That’s because while most compact SUVs are based on mainstream hatchbacks such as the Ford Fiesta, the Suzuki Jimny’s underpinnings more closely resemble those of a traditional off roader. This is key to it offering the genuine all-terrain ability to match its functional looks.
Suzuki Jimny updates and facelifts
Originally launched in 1970, the Jimny was updated with a Mk2 generation in 1981, followed by the Mk3’s arrival in 1998. The fourth generation Jimny arrived in the UK in 2019 and quickly earned critical acclaim. Highlights include winning Best 4x4 at the UK Car of The Year Awards, reaching the World Car Awards’ final and receiving Autocar magazine’s Game Changer award. The Suzuki Jimny Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) arrived in 2020 with two seats and a larger loadbay and has earned similar praise.
Suzuki offered the five-seat Suzuki Jimny only through to 2020, so its short production run and high acclaim make it a sought-after model on the second-hand market. That wasn’t the end of production, though. The original model was immediately replaced by the Suzuki Jimny LCV, which looks much the same from the outside but removes the rear seats to create a larger capacity.
All versions are powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine with either a manual or automatic gearbox and Suzuki’s ALLGRIP PRO four-wheel-drive system. This allows you to select front-wheel drive for normal driving to help save fuel. Four-wheel-drive can then be used on-demand for more challenging conditions.
Practicality and style of the car
The Suzuki Jimny’s boxy exterior design looks good and helps maximise interior space. It measures 3,645mm long and 1,645mm wide – compact dimensions that make it significantly smaller than its competitor, the Dacia Duster, which measures 4,341mm and 1,804mm in comparison.
The front seats offer plenty of leg-, shoulder- and headroom for tall adults. Rear seats in four-seater models, have a 50/50 split and can be folded fully flat. Competitors such as the Jeep Renegade and Dacia Duster’s rear seats also fold forwards but won’t stow completely flat. This increases luggage space from the boot’s 85 litres to a handy 830 litres – some 53 litres more generous than its predecessor – which is accessed via a side-hinged tailgate. The back of the rear seats and boot floor also feature a plastic coating, making it easy to clean up any spills or stains.
The two-seat LCV models maximise load carrying with 863 litres of space. A safety cargo partition separates the load area from the driver and passenger, helping to keep everything from heavy loads to playful dogs out of harm’s way.
Adding to its rugged appeal, the Suzuki Jimny can tow a load of up to 1300kg if the trailer has brakes or 750kg in the case of an unbraked trailer.
Running costs
The entry-level Suzuki Jimny SZ4 sits in insurance group 13 out of 50, with the top-of-the-range Suzuki Jimny SZ5 occupying group 14. Road tax costs £180 annually for all models.
How a used Suzuki Jimny drives

A low-range transfer gear further enhances off-road performance. This allows the Jimny to crawl over extremely challenging terrain like sand or thick mud at a lower speed than conventional cars.

Features you can expect to find in a Suzuki Jimny
Interior
The Suzuki Jimny makes a feature of its practicality with a simple and robust interior that includes a scratch and stain-resistant grain finish, easy-to-use controls and excellent visibility enabled by its distinctively boxy exterior design.
The driving position accommodates most drivers. There is a generous amount of space for a car of this size, with comfortable fabric seats and a height-adjustable multi-function steering wheel. Key instruments are set in cubic housings and are always lit, making them easy to read in all light conditions.
Technology
A CD player with DAB radio and Bluetooth connectivity is standard equipment on the SZ4 model.
A Bluetooth-compatible 7-inch touchscreen is fitted on the top-of-the-range SZ5, with wired Android Auto or Apple CarPlay available for your smartphone. It also supports hands-free calling, to keep you focused on the road.
Safety
The Jimny features six airbags and child-seat ISOFIX mountings for both rear seats. It also includes Suzuki Safety Support, which helps maximise safety with its range of advanced systems. Dual Sensor Brake Support intervenes if an accident is likely, issuing both an audio and visual warning to the driver before applying emergency autonomous braking. Euro NCAP awarded the Jimny three stars in 2018, the same as the Jeep Renegade. The Jimny scored 73% for adult occupancy and 84% for child occupancy whereas the Renegade scored 82% for adult occupancy and equalled the Jimny with a score of 84% for child.
Lane Departure Warning and a weaving alert function warns the driver if they unintentionally goover a line marking. The High-Beam Assist feature automatically switches between high and low beam headlights to reduce the need for driver intervention at speeds of 25mph and more.
Two standard features keep the Jimny under control on steep slopes. Hill Descent Control lets you programme a maximum speed ahead of tackling a slippery incline, while Hill Hold Control stops the car rolling during a hill start. If the Jimny detects a loss of grip, the brake limited slip differential on both axles engages on the wheel that is slipping. It then redistributes torque to the opposite wheel to regain traction.
Traffic Sign Recognition flags up useful reminders of speed limits and no overtaking zones in the instrument panel. It means the driver can be alerted even when the road sign is no longer visible.
