The Toyota GT86 is a compact sports car first released in 2012. Boasting a powerful engine and a sporty design, it is a performance-driven model well-suited to petrolheads and enthusiasts. And thanks to its great suitability for both track days and city driving, it is a competitor to other sports models like the Mazda MX-5, BMW 2 Series Coupé and Ford Mustang.
Toyota GT86 updates and facelifts
The Toyota GT86 shares many of its design features with the Subaru BRZ, including its platform and running gear, with both being manufactured Subaru’s Gunma plant in Japan. The Toyota GT86’s powerful engine and choice between a manual or automatic gearbox make it a standout option in the sports car vehicle class.
Available with four seats and with a coupé body, the Toyota GT86 is also unmistakable on the road. Sitting close to the ground, and with narrow headlights, a sporty diffuser and deep air intakes, the Toyota GT86 combines excellent performance with attractive styling.
The Toyota GT86 was first introduced in 2012, borrowing design elements from both the Subaru BRZ and former AE86. It received a mid-life facelift in 2017 which added a wider front grille, a revised bumper, new fog lights and LED headlights. On the inside, new Alcantara leather was added to the upholstery while new precision stitching introduced some welcome style. However, the Toyota GT68’s successful blueprint as a fixed-roof, rear-wheel drive model was retained.
The Mk2 Toyota GT86 was launched in 2021 with tuned-up engine performance and minor styling revisions to the front and rear bumpers.
Practicality and style of the car
The Toyota GT86 has a height of 1,285mm, length of 4,240mm and width of 1,775mm. This makes it 49mm longer than the Audi TT and around 325mm longer than the Mazda MX-5.
This added length means that for the front two seats, both you and your passenger will have ample space to get comfortable. As well as lots of legroom, there’s also good headroom, so even tall passengers will feel comfortable. The rear seats are well-suited for small children.
The Toyota GT86 comes with a standard boot space of 237 litres – more than the Mazda MX-5’s 130 litres. The rear seats fold in a 50:50 split which expands the boot space to 391 litres – enough space for shopping bags or luggage.
Running costs
The Toyota GT86’s insurance premiums range from group 30 to 34, which is better value than the Audi TT’s range of 33 to 43. The Toyota GT86 also qualifies for an annual road tax between £180 and £320 depending on the trim. This is much better value than the Mazda MX-5’s range of between £290 and £365.
How a used Toyota GT86 drives
The Toyota GT86 comes with a performance-orientated suspension that is tuned to deliver a firm yet comfortable drive. The model is available with one petrol engine. Combined with the model’s rear-wheel drive and lightweight body, this engine helps make the Toyota GT86 one of the most esteemed sports cars on the market.
This engine is a 4.0-litre flat-four petrol boxer engine that generates 205Nm of torque and 197bhp. The engine’s flat-four configuration means that the engine is mounted further down the model’s body when compared to other vehicle classes, helping lower the model’s centre of gravity and improving handling. It accelerates from 0-62mph in 7.6 seconds and returns between 32.8 and 36.2mpg when paired with the six-speed manual transmission. When instead paired with the automatic six-speed gearbox, its fuel economy is pushed to between 35.3 and 39.8mpg.

Features you can expect in a Toyota GT86
Interior
The cockpit of the Toyota GT86 has an excellent combination of both robust and illuminated interfaces that gives it a sporty feel. Across the centre console and steering wheel, you’ll find tactile, hard-wearing plastics, as well as a leather-trimmed steering wheel for extra grip. Depending on the age of your model, you will also benefit from comfortable Alcantara leather upholstery.
The low-slung driving position emphasises the model’s sportiness and makes you feel connected to the road. And thanks to the Toyota GT86’s effective suspension and supportive RECARO bucket seats, it’s easy to stay comfortable even when cornering at speed.
On the centre console, you’ll find a range of plastic buttons and switches which control everything from your air conditioning to drive mode. These buttons, as well as your instrument dials and window operation buttons, all come with orange backlighting which adds to the sporty feel of the cabin.
At the top of the centre console is a 6.1-inch touchscreen which is linked to a six-speaker sound system. This touchscreen comes with Bluetooth connectivity, supports smartphone mirroring and can display sat nav.
While compact, there are plenty of handy storage slots and containers for keeping the cabin tidy. You’ll find reasonably sized door bins and a glovebox container, as well as cupholders and a slot for your smartphone in the centre console.
Technology
The Toyota has a select range of technology that keeps the car safe and tweaks its performance. The model comes with a dedicated ‘track’ mode which monitors your revs, G force and lap splits and displays them on the touchscreen on the centre console – enabling you to see the car’s performance at a glance.
You’ll also have a range of active safety features, including an anti-lock braking system which prevents your wheels from locking up. There is also a brake assist function to reduce the stopping distance when emergency braking and a vehicle stability control system which helps prevent loss of control while you are carrying out emergency steering.
Safety
The Toyota GT86 has not yet been tested in Euro NCAP’s crash safety rating. However, as part of its range of safety features, you will find seven airbags that offer frontal and side protection as well as a built-in limited slip differential for better traction during cornering. For track safety, the model’s electronic stability control has a ‘sport’ mode which strikes a balance between safety and maximising your racing experience.
