The arrival of the Mercedes-Benz EQC in 2019 marked a significant milestone for the German manufacturer. As its first mainstream all-electric model, the EQC is based on the Concept EQ, which debuted at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. It marks the beginning of the brand’s transition towards a more sustainable model range that retains the design, comfort and performance for which Mercedes-Benz is known.

Mercedes-Benz EQC updates and facelifts

Blue Mercedes-Benz EQC from the front

In a market sector that has grown significantly in recent years, the EQC faces competition from vehicles such as the Audi Q8 e-tron, Jaguar I-Pace, and Tesla Model X. Despite this, the EQC has established a strong reputation thanks to its combination of sophistication, technology, and comfort.

Equipped with an 80kWh battery pack which is capable of 0-62mph in 5.1 seconds and offers a driving range of up to 255 miles on a single charge. The EQC will suit growing families and those needing to pack in lots of equipment and navigate city streets and country lanes with ease.

The EQC has not undergone significant facelifts or updates since its introduction, maintaining its original design and features. However, Mercedes-Benz has invested in easing range anxiety for EQC drivers, introducing a Max Range mode that uses sat nav data and traffic sign recognition to optimise efficiency.

Practicality and style of the car

The model’s dimensions, a length of 4,762mm and a width of 1,884mm, make the EQC a relatively compact SUV that offers ample space for four adults. The high roofline ensures even the tallest adults are accommodated, and the vehicle’s width means three passengers can fit comfortably in the rear on shorter journeys. There’s also plenty of space for two child seats to be secured.

In terms of boot space, the EQC offers a respectable 500-litre capacity, which expands to 1,060 litres when the rear seats are folded. The boot features a large opening and a low load lip, making it easier to load bulky items. For added convenience, the rear seats can be folded flat at the push of a button, allowing for easier transportation of larger items.

Many electric vehicles aren’t suitable for towing, but the EQC is more than competent. Its unbraked capacity is 750kg and all three trim levels can haul a braked weight of up to 1,800kg.

Running costs

The Mercedes-Benz EQC occupies group 50 out of 50 for insurance, making it comparable with the Audi e-tron and the Jaguar I-Pace. However, it offers a financial advantage when it comes to road tax, being entirely exempt from this charge as well as Clean Air Zone charges, including congestion and Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) or Low Emission Zone (LEZ) fees.

How a used Mercedes-Benz EQC drives

The driving experience of the Mercedes-Benz EQC is defined by its electric powertrain. Unlike some competitors that offer multiple engine options, the EQC comes with a single setup. The vehicle is equipped with twin electric motors that generate a combined output of 408bhp, along with an impressive torque figure of 760Nm. What’s more, this torque is instantly available, providing immediate acceleration.

Power delivery in the EQC is facilitated by single-speed automatic transmission. There's no traditional gearbox to speak of, which means acceleration is linear and uninterrupted from a standstill. And, despite its weight – just under 2.5 tonnes – the EQC boasts a 0-62mph acceleration time of just 5.1 seconds. This puts it ahead of some traditional hot hatches and even rivals like the Audi Q8 e-tron.

The EQC comes with an 80kWh lithium-ion battery that provides an official range of up to 255 miles. Charging the EQC is relatively straightforward; it takes approximately 75 minutes to reach an 80% charge using a 50kWh fast charger, and nearly 13 hours if you're using a 7kWh home charger.

If you’re interested in optimising energy usage, the EQC offers different recuperation modes, allowing you to harvest energy during braking. These settings can be easily set using paddles behind the steering wheel, offering a personalised driving experience.

Features you can expect in a Mercedes-Benz EQC

Interior

Blue Mercedes-Benz EQC interior front seats, centre console, dashboard, infotainment screen and steering wheel

The interior of the Mercedes-Benz EQC offers a blend of luxury and familiarity. In the entry-level Sport trim, seats are upholstered in man-made leather, while higher trims feature genuine leather. The dashboard is wrapped in synthetic material, complemented by polished metal finishes and glossy black panels, creating a high-quality and cutting-edge interior.

Storage has been carefully considered too. Door bins can accommodate a 1.5-litre bottle of water, and the glovebox offers decent space for storing personal items. Additional storage is available under the front-centre armrest, and two cup holders are conveniently placed on the centre console. In the rear, the backs of the front seats have the Mercedes-Benz aeroplane-style pockets for extra storage, and a folding central armrest with cup holders adds to the car's practicality.

In terms of aesthetics, the EQC doesn't stray far from the Mercedes family look, with the centre console and switchgear reminiscent of the GLC. It does, however, incorporate unique elements like neon-blue details and square air vents. A wide range of ambient LED mood lighting colours are also available to add a touch of personal flair to your driving experience.

Technology

One of the standout features of the EQC is its dual 10.25-inch display screens, which serve as the control centre for the vehicle. These screens are not only visually striking but also highly functional, offering sharp graphics and a logical menu layout.

You can navigate through the system using the touchpad located between the front seats, touch-sensitive buttons on the steering wheel, or the left-hand screen itself. If you prefer a hands-free experience, the EQC offers a sophisticated voice control system, known as 'Hey Mercedes,' which understands natural language commands.

When it comes to infotainment, the EQC doesn't disappoint. Standard features across all models include DAB radio, sat nav, Bluetooth, and a range of connected services. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available on the mid-range AMG Line Premium trim and above.

Opting for the AMG Line Premium trim adds a wireless phone charging plate and an augmented reality feature for the sat nav system, which overlays directional graphics on a camera feed of the road ahead.

Parking is also made easier with standard parking sensors and a reversing camera, while the Premium Plus edition comes with a 360-degree camera and includes an auto-park feature.

Safety

The Mercedes-Benz EQC has received high praise for its comprehensive safety features, earning a full five-star rating from Euro NCAP in 2019. Notably, it scored an impressive 96% for adult occupant protection and 90% for child occupant protection.

Standard safety equipment across all EQC models includes a suite of airbags, various traction and stability aids, and automatic emergency braking. The car is also equipped with lane departure warning and a blind-spot assist system to enhance driver awareness. For parking convenience and additional safety, the EQC offers Parking Assist and a rear-view camera as standard.

An optional Driving Assistance Plus package can be found in selected used models. This includes advanced features like adaptive cruise control, lane changing assist and evasive steering assist. This package can automatically steer you away from danger and recognise cornering and cross-traffic scenarios.

Mercedes-Benz EQC AMG Line

The base AMG Line model comes equipped with features such as 20-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry, climate control, and cruise control. It offers a powered tailgate, heated leather-effect seats, and ambient lighting that can be customised in 64 different colours.

Mercedes-Benz EQC AMG Line Premium

Moving up the range, the AMG Line Premium adds further luxuries. This trim level upgrades the wheels to 21-inch alloys and includes a glass sunroof. Smartphone integration is made seamless with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Another highlight is the Mercedes-Benz Air Balance system, which not only filters but also fragrances the cabin air.

Mercedes-Benz EQC AMG Line Premium Plus

Topping the range, the AMG Line Premium Plus boasts its own unique 21-inch alloy wheel design and includes a head-up display for easier access to driving information. Parking is made simpler with the inclusion of a parking package, and comfort is enhanced with 12-way electric front seat adjustment.
