BMW i7 updates and facelifts
Launched in 2022, BMW introduced the i7 as the new flagship model for the 7 Series. Building on the success of the i3 in 2013, the i7 incorporates all-electric technology to create the luxury saloon model.
Practicality and style of the car
The BMW i7 has a 500-litre boot which comes with an automatic tailgate as standard, allowing the driver to open it effortlessly. Inside, the boot space is wide and deep, providing plenty of space for luggage and shopping. There is also a low loading lip, so lifting heavy items in and out of the boot is made easy.
In comparison to its rivals, the BMW i7 has more space than the 350 litres in the Audi A8 hybrid and the 395 litres in the Mercedes-Benz S-Class hybrid.
Running costs
The BMW i7 as a luxury saloon falls into insurance group 50, along with its rivals. However, the BMW i7 benefits from its all-electric powertrain by having no annual road tax, unlike non-electric rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which has a road tax of between £560 and £570.
How a used BMW i7 drives
There are three powertrains available that all use the same 101.7kWh battery and dual electric motors, one in the front and one in the rear, to provide the power for the four-wheel steering on the i7.
The entry-level xDrive60 puts down a combined 536bhp with 745Nm of torque, achieving 0 to 62mph in 4.7 seconds. This has a range of 380 miles before needing to be recharged.
The eDrive50 puts down a combined 448bhp and 650Nm of torque. This powertrain achieves 0 to 62mph in 5.3 seconds and has a range of about 380 miles.
Next is the M70 xDrive which is capable of a combined 651bhp and 1,100Nm of torque. This powertrain can achieve 0 to 62mph in 3.6 seconds and has a range of 344 miles.
When the batteries need to be recharged, it doesn’t take long. A public 195kW charger can take 34 minutes or a 22kW charger at home can take 5 hours and 30 minutes, meaning you can leave it charging overnight, ready to use in the morning.
When it comes to range, the i7’s large battery provides a greater range than the Mercedes-Benz EQS, which can only travel up to around 350 miles.
Features you can expect to find in a BMW i7
Interior
The interior of the BMW i7 is modern, almost futuristic, with the amount of technology it features. The exterior is also modern and stylish. A large front grille is the centrepiece of the exterior design and helps it to stand out on the road, along with sleek LED headlights.
The conventional dashboard is replaced with BMW’s Interaction Bar. This is a backlit transparent panel that forms the width of the dashboard. This features ambient LED lighting and is used to display warning lights.
The infotainment system uses BMW’s Operating System 8 Drive. It has an intuitive layout and a responsive touchscreen as well as voice control, all housed within a 14.9-inch screen on the dashboard. This comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as standard, for smartphone connectivity. To control and navigate the menu, there is also a rotary dial on the centre console as well as the touchscreen interface. This can be used to control car functions such as comfort settings, media and the integrated sat nav.
The 12.3-inch digital instrument display shows important information such as the speedometer, rev counter and fuel gauge. This can be customised to display other car information such as radio information or battery capacity.
In the rear, some variants have a large 31-inch Theatre Screen that comes with built-in Amazon Fire TV and a 5G aerial on the roof. This allows for rear passengers to stream TV shows and movies when travelling on long journeys. This screen is controlled via the touchscreen interface and through the controls located on the rear doors. A 40-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system can also feature in the interior of the BMW i7.
Passengers in the spacious cabin will find themselves comfortable with supportive seats that offer good amounts of legroom and headroom. As standard, the merino leather or faux-leather front seats come with electrical adjustment. The front seats are heated to keep passengers warm in the winter. These seats can also come with both ventilation for keeping cool and massage functionality for added luxury.
With the Executive rear seat package and with the front seats folded down, the rear seats can be reclined, and a footrest can be lifted up to create lounger-like chairs. Other features in the rear can include electric blinds that can be especially helpful when using the Theatre Screen.
Road and wind noise is well hushed in the interior, enhancing the comfort of the ride. Responsive suspension and good handling dampen rough roads, providing a smooth and controlled drive.
Storage is good. In the front, there is a large cubby in the centre console for storing personal valuables, a smaller cubby at the front of the console for storing smartphones, a pair of cupholders and a decent-sized glovebox. In the rear, the back of the centre seat folds down and has a pair of cup holders and door bins are large enough to fit water bottles or other personal items. There are also USB-C charging ports and wireless charging pads to keep devices charged.
Technology
The BMW i7 comes with some semi-autonomous driving features such as adaptive cruise control and self-steering that works very well on the motorway. Other features that help to assist the driver on the road include steering assist, which helps to keep you in the centre of the lane and alerts the driver if the vehicle drifts towards the edges.
Front and rear parking sensors help to avoid collisions with obstacles when parking, and a rear traffic monitor helps to alert the driver of oncoming vehicles when reversing out of a parking space. The i7 comes with cruise control as standard but can also come with adaptive cruise control which uses sensors to adjust the distance between the car in front and the vehicle depending on speed and traffic.
There is also a traffic light recognition system that alerts the driver if there is a red light ahead and automatically slows the vehicle to prepare to stop.
Safety
There is a full complement of passenger, driver and side airbags in the cabin for protection in the event of a collision. Blind spot monitoring alerts the driver of any vehicles or cyclists in the driver’s blind spot to help avoid collisions with other road users.
In the rear, there are two ISOFIX anchor points for installing child seats securely in the two outermost seats.
Other safety features can include automatic speed limit assist to prevent you going over the speed limit by automatically adjusting your speed to match local speed limits.
