The BMW M4 is a high-performance sports coupé launched in 2014. It’s part of the BMW 4 Series line-up, including both coupés and convertibles. It has been developed by BMW's renowned motorsport division, BMW M. This model offers an exhilarating driving experience by combining cutting-edge engineering with stylish design elements.

Notable enhancements compared to the standard BMW 4 Series involved an upgraded engine, suspension, exhaust system, brakes and measures to reduce weight, including a carbon fibre roof.

BMW M4 updates and facelifts

F82/F83 generation (2014-2020): Debuting in 2014, the BMW M4 succeeded the M3 coupé and convertible models. Offered as both a coupé (F82) and a convertible (F83), this generation underwent minor updates during its production, including interior refinements, technological advancements and select design tweaks.

F82/F83 LCI (Life Cycle Impulse) facelift (2017-2020): In 2017, BMW introduced a mid-cycle facelift for the F82/F83 M4 generation called the LCI update. This brought visual and technical enhancements, including revised front and rear bumpers, updated LED headlights and taillights and minor interior improvements. Performance and mechanical adjustments were also made for boosted driving dynamics.

G82 generation (2020-Present): The current BMW M4 generation debuted in 2020, showcasing a distinct design from its predecessor. Available as both a coupé and a four-door Gran Coupé for the first time, the G82 M4 introduced a notable kidney grille design that diverged from traditional BMW styling. This generation offers superior performance, innovative technology and improved driving features.

Rivals to the BMW M4 include the Mercedes-Benz AMG C63 Coupé, Audi RS5 and Lexus RC F. Its exceptional fusion of power and performance across coupé and convertible variants makes this model a remarkable contender in its class.

The majority of used M4 models (excluding the limited edition CSL) come with two engine choices, both featuring a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six. It also offers two gearbox options: a standard six-speed manual and the seven-speed M DCT dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Practicality and style of the car

The BMW M4 excels in terms of practicality. Unlike the standard BMW 4 Series, the distinction lies in its broader sports front seats. The available M carbon bucket seats provide improved lateral support for both the driver and passenger while still affording generous headroom and legroom for taller adults.

The 445-litre boot capacity easily takes care of your weekly food shop or luggage when taking trips away. This surpasses the 355-litre capacity of the Mercedes-Benz AMG C63 Coupe and the 366-litre boot capacity of the Lexus RC F. This positions the BMW M4 as an excellent option compared to its competitors.

Running costs

The BMW M4 has comparatively modest insurance ratings and falls within insurance groups 42 to 44. In contrast, the insurance for the Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupé reaches higher levels, ranging from 45 to 50.

The standard road tax rate for 2014 models onwards is £180 annually, with higher trims reaching up to £555.

How a used BMW M4 drives

The BMW M4 sets itself apart with unparalleled driving performance. It outpaces the previous M3 iteration, benefiting from a 30% surge in torque compared to its older V8-powered counterpart. This BMW M4 is also 83kg lighter than the M3 coupé and comes equipped with a manual gearbox that drops below 1,500kg. This weight reduction is due to careful material selection and construction techniques. Elements like a carbon fibre roof, boot lid, main driveshaft and aluminium bonnet and wings contribute to these weight savings.

The performance of the twin-turbocharged straight six-cylinder engine truly stands out. The compact inlet tract for the two turbochargers combined with efficient air-to-air and air-to-water cooling for the charge air ensures instant torque delivery, and a substantial 550Nm of torque is available.

The BMW M4 achieves an impressive 0 to 62mph acceleration in just 4.1 seconds (4.3 seconds for manual gearboxes) and it can reach a speed of 170mph This performance is accompanied by a fuel efficiency of 29.7mpg to 34mpg and CO2 emissions of 223g/km, put the M4 within the upper 37% Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) tax band for company car users. It offers a substantial power output of 502.88bhp.

Features you can expect in a BMW M4

Interior

While the BMW M4 is similar to the re-profiled BMW 3 Series, it adds distinct features such as an exclusive steering wheel and a specialised gear lever (specific to the M-DCT automatic). The seats balance sportiness and remarkable comfort even during long journeys. As well as delivering comfort, the perforated leather design gives a premium feel throughout the interior.

Every piece of switchgear is positioned to function perfectly. The head-up display enables users to personalise the displayed information and helps drivers maintain focus on the road.

Technology

The iDrive control system allows users to manage various functions, including climate control (air conditioning and heating), the audio system (radio and CD player), sat nav and communication features. It also hosts an innovative GoPro camera app that allows users to preview camera output on the M4’s prominent 8.8-inch screen. The screen boasts high-quality graphics and rapid responses, making it easy to use.

Adaptive dampers create comfort in the BMW M4. It has three available modes: Comfort, Sport and Sport+. The latter two, particularly Sport+, enhances the model's responsiveness. When set to comfort mode, configuring steering, throttle response and gear changes in the M-DCT automatic gearbox (which has its own three modes) makes everyday driving comfortable.

Safety

The BMW Series 4 coupé was awarded an exceptional adult occupant protection score of 97% and a child occupant score of 83% by the Euro NCAP collision test, scoring five stars. The BMW M4 has a comprehensive airbag system with front, side and knee airbags that shield occupants in case of a collision.

Most used trims have an array of advanced safety features. Adaptive cruise control helps the driver keep a safe following distance from the car ahead and also adjusts the vehicle's speed to maintain a secure gap. Lane departure warning alerts the driver if unintentional lane drifting occurs and electronic stability control helps the model’s steadiness during tricky driving situations.

Forward collision warning makes the driver aware of impending frontal collisions so that they can react promptly. The automatic emergency braking system serves as a last line of defence, stepping in if the driver doesn't respond to the collision warning and automatically applying brakes to prevent or reduce an impact.

Blind spot monitoring and the rear-view camera also lend a helping hand during parking and reversing, offering a clear view of the rear surroundings. Parking sensors work in tandem, detecting obstacles during parking and delivering auditory cues to help the driver. The adaptive headlights enhance night-time visibility and automatically adjust their intensity and direction based on driving conditions.
