The BMW X3 arrived on British roads in 2003. The X3 was designed to provide a mid-size five-seat SUV option to families. It is more compact than the X5. The model proved popular, and when the third generation X3 launched in 2019, an M variant was added to the lineup.
The X3 M stands apart from the regular X3 lineup, delivering sportier performance. The model offers drivers swifter acceleration and sharper handling. The model only has one trim-level, the X3 M Competition. It rivals high-performance SUVs such as the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, the Jaguar F-Pace SVR and the Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 63 S.
The X3 M asserts its individuality with distinct exterior styling. The blacked-out kidney grille features alongside iconic M badging. Large side air intakes and striking 21-inch alloy wheels also add to the model's sporty aesthetic. The sloping roofline also gives an aerodynamic feel, in addition to helping the model achieve its impressive 0-62mph time of 3.8 seconds.
BMW X3 M updates and facelifts
The BMW X3 M underwent a facelift in 2022, in which several improvements were made to the powertrain and driving dynamics. Refinements were made on both the all-wheel-drive system and the steering wheel. The throttle response was also sharpened to give a more aggressive feel.
Practicality and style of the car
The X3 M’s sporty aesthetic hasn’t meant a compromise on practicality. At 4,703mm in length, it will comfortably accommodate five occupants. The boot measures 550 litres, enabling you to load golf clubs, a buggy, suitcases or even small items of furniture without difficulty. With the rear seats folded down, 1,600 litres are on offer. This matches that of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio and Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 63 S.
Unlike some sports models, the BMW X3 M is rated for towing. It can haul a maximum braked capacity of 2,500kg – plenty for those wishing to tow a medium to large caravan, a trailer or horsebox. Outperforming its main rivals the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio and Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 63 S in this respect. Both of these have a capacity of 2,330kg and 2,200kg respectively.
Running costs
As a luxurious and sporty SUV, the BMW X3 M occupies groups 45–46 out of 50 for insurance. This compares favourably to the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio and the Jaguar F-Pace SVR, both of which sit between groups 47–50. In terms of Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), the annual rate for the first five years of tax renewal is £570. This is because the list price for the model exceeds £40,000. Thereafter the charges drop to £180 per year.
How a used BMW X3 M drives
The BMW X3 M is a sporty and stylish model both inside and out, but it’s out on the road where it really comes into its own. Fitted with a 3.0-litre straight-six petrol engine, it produces 503bhp and 650Nm of torque. The engine is mated to M Steptronic eight-speed automatic transmission. This engine also features Drivelogic technology. This enables you to select from several shifting options, making the pace of your drive smooth and relaxed or swift and dynamic.
The X3 M achieves a 0-62mph time of just 3.8 seconds. The top speed is limited to 155mph on most used BMW X3 M cars. You may find some used models with a top speed of 174mph which have been modified by BMW when it was first sold at the request of the owner. Efficiency remains respectable despite the model’s power. The model can generate a combined figure of 24.8mpg.
The X3 M is equipped with BMW’s xDrive four-wheel-drive system. This system has a bias towards the rear wheels, making for a sportier and more dynamic on-road experience. There’s also a set of driving modes, which adjust the vehicle’s parameters to suit your needs. Comfort mode optimises the suspension and dampers for a cosseted ride. Sport mode improves the throttle response and makes the suspension stiffer. Sport+ mode is designed for ultimate power and performance out on the roads. This mode even fairs well on a racing track.
Features you can expect in a BMW X3 M
Interior
The BMW X3 M is undoubtedly well made, building on the quality and premium feel of the regular X3 range. The raised ride height and wide windscreen give a commanding view of the road. The cockpit has a logical layout, with controls that fall easily to hand. The front sports seats are electrically adjustable, helping you to find the most comfortable position with ease. The front seats also feature thick bolstering to support you through twists and turns. They’re upholstered in Vernasca leather with two-tone colouring. The cockpit features M-specific styling elements including an M leather steering wheel and M gearshift selector.
The X3 M retains the X3’s boxy dimensions, but it adds a sloping roofline for a more aerodynamic aesthetic. As such, it offers cavernous space for occupants. There is ample head and legroom for front passengers. The sloping roofline doesn’t impinge on rear headroom, meaning six-foot occupants can be accommodated. Storage space is provided by a well-sized glovebox, large door bins and a cubby beneath the central armrest.
Technology
Unlike other high-end SUVs, the BMW X3 M has dash-mounted controls alongside the 12.3-inch infotainment system. This makes functions such as climate control easy to operate. The display screen itself can be controlled by touch or via the rotary dial. The system delivers excellent visual clarity and resolution. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported as standard. The audio system is a 16-speaker Harmon Kardon stereo with crisp, rich sound. If you prefer the sound of the engine, the M Sport exhaust system delivers a customisable sound. This can be modified via the integrated exhaust valve. Sport and Sport+ modes automatically produce a more intense sound, while Comfort mode makes the engine sound more discreet.
The BMW heads-up display is offered, which has M-specific functions. It projects driving data onto the windscreen, helping you keep your eyes on the road while viewing information about your speed or reading navigation directions. The M-specific display includes a gear indicator and RPM curve. Other useful technologies include the digital key, which enables you to unlock your BMW X3 M with a compatible iPhone. There is also a Wi-Fi hotspot, which allows up to ten devices to use the internet on the go.
Safety
Although the BMW X3 M hasn’t been individually tested by Euro NCAP, the X3 on which it’s based received a full five-star rating in 2017. It achieved scores of 93% and 84% respectively for adult and child occupant protection.
The X3 M has an array of active features to assist your everyday driving. Features can include automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist and a forward-collision-warning system. The forward-collision-warning system identifies potential collision risks and warns you to brake. The system will automatically apply them if you fail to do so. There’s also a reversing camera for easier parking and manoeuvring. A driver attention monitor that advises you to take a break if it detects signs of fatigue is another safety feature. Passive features include front and side airbags and ISOFIX mounting points for child seats on the outer rear seats.
