Taking family car practicality to new levels, the Citroën Berlingo Multispace MPV is based on the popular Berlingo van. First launched in 1996, it offered a completely different take on everyday travel. The model optimised space and accessibility by adapting a light commercial vehicle (LCV) platform and including sliding rear doors. It was well received by motorists, selling around 50,000 units in the UK.

Citroën Berlingo Multispace updates and facelifts

The Mk2 Berlingo Multispace arrived in 2008, improving upon the original in terms of interior comfort and technology. Five and seven-seat iterations were available, as well as a choice of one petrol and two diesel engines. Practicality was enhanced with additions such as flip-up tables for the middle row on the seven-seat variant, and individually tilting and folding rear seats. The model was on sale until 2018.

In July 2018, the Mk3 Berlingo MPV was launched, this time without the ‘Multispace’ title. As with the previous generation, it came in five-seat (M) and seven-seat (XL) versions, the latter being 35cm longer. There were also petrol and diesel engine options, as well as two trims: Feel and Flair. The Flair XTR trim was added in 2019.

Rivals for the Citroën Berlingo Multispace include the Peugeot Rifter, Fiat Doblo, Vauxhall Combo Life and Volkswagen Caddy.

The second-generation Berlingo Multispace was given a facelift in 2015, with the updated version being revealed at that year’s Geneva Motor Show. The model boasted a new bumper, daytime running lights, a revised grille, and two additional paint options. The diesel engines were made cleaner and extra safety features, such as autonomous emergency braking, were incorporated.

In 2022 the Mk3 Berlingo MPV received a significant update: all petrol and diesel engines were removed from the lineup and only fully electric editions were available. M and XL editions were still available in Feel and Flair XTR trims. However, high demand for traditional powertrains led Citroën to reintroduce them in 2023.

Practicality and style of the car

Practicality is at the very heart of the Citroën Berlingo Multispace. Its boxy design ensures there’s plenty of space for both passengers and luggage, whether you choose the five-seat M variant or the seven-seat XL. The Mk2 Berlingo Multispace provides 675 cubic litres of boot space, with the Mk3 M iteration expanding on that to offer 775 litres. Choose the XL and there’s a staggering 1,050 cubic litres available.

In both body styles, the Berlingo MPV has individually tilting and folding rear seats, freeing up an even greater capacity. In XL variants, the third-row seats can be removed entirely. In addition, the front passenger seat folds flat, creating a cavernous load area and enabling you to carry items of up to 2.7 metres (M edition) or 3.05 metres (XL edition) in length.

Access to both the boot and the rear compartment is easy. The rear doors slide, meaning occupants can get in and out even in tight parking spaces. On Flair XTR trims, the boot door has a separate glass hatch that makes loading smaller items easier when space is limited.

If you’re looking to tow a caravan or small trailer, the Citroën Berlingo Multispace can accommodate braked weights of up to 1,300kg.

Running costs

In addition to its practicality, the Berlingo Multispace’s running costs make it hugely appealing. Mk2 editions (2008-2018) mostly occupy insurance groups 4–17 out of 50, with a handful of variants straying into group 23. Mk3 models (2023 onwards) are more cost-efficient still, sitting in groups 8–15 for insurance.

Road tax varies widely according to the model year and engine you select. Some Berlingo Multispace variants only incur an annual fee of £20-35. Others are costed at £365 per year. If you choose a model manufactured from April 2017 onwards, you’ll pay a flat rate of £180 each year.

How a used Citroën Berlingo Multispace drives

Mk2 editions (2008-2018) of the Citroën Berlingo Multispace come with a choice of one petrol and two diesel engines. The petrol is a 1.6-litre 94bhp unit, which develops 152Nm of torque and returns a combined fuel economy of 44.1mpg.

The diesels are both 1.6-litre units too, offering 99bhp and 118bhp and are paired with six-speed manual transmission. The 99bhp variant delivers 254Nm of torque and a combined efficiency of 68.9mpg. The 118bhp offers more power without compromising on economy, returning 67.3mpg on the combined cycle.

The Mk3 Berlingo Multispace (2023 onwards) also has one petrol and two diesel options. The petrol is a 1.2-litre 108bhp unit that is teamed with a six-speed manual gearbox and achieves a 0-62mph time of 11.5 seconds. The diesels are both 1.5-litre engines with outputs of 99bhp and 128bhp. The former also comes with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard and takes you from 0-62mph in 14.1 seconds.

The latter is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and reaches 62mph in 11 seconds. Combined fuel economy is 54.4mpg and 51.9mpg respectively. The all-electric ë-Berlingo is powered by a 134bhp electric motor, which gets you from 0-62mph in 11.5 seconds. The M variant boasts a maximum range of 177 miles, while the XL can cover 168 miles on a single charge.

Features you can expect in a Citroën Berlingo Multispace

Interior

The Citroën Berlingo Multispace is the perfect choice for drivers looking for maximum space. Sliding rear doors make access to the rear seats easy, and a high roofline means the tallest adults can be accommodated in comfort. Both the five-seat M and seven-seat XL will carry five adults easily, and the XL’s rearmost seats are suitable for children.

There’s a generous level of storage for loose items too. The large centre console box is suitable for smartphones and there’s a passenger-side cup holder. The door bins and glovebox are of a useful size too. The two front seats have a folding table attached to the rear, enabling kids in the outer rear seats to have snacks and drinks in front of them on longer journeys, or even play on a tablet or do some colouring.

From 2015 onwards, Mk2 editions of the Berlingo Multispace feature a standard seven-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth connectivity. Smartphone mirroring is also available on these variants, which allows you to project your smart device onto the screen, as well as a voice control system. Choose a Mk3 (2023 onwards) and you’ll get an eight-inch touchscreen, which provides access to DAB radio, Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. There’s also a six-speaker audio system and top-spec Flair XTR trims come with sat nav.

Technology

All Mk3 Citroën Berlingo Multispace vehicles come with automatic headlights as standard. Rear parking sensors are also featured on both trims to make parking and manoeuvres easier. In addition, cruise control is fitted to make motorway driving feel effortless.

Opt for the top-spec Flair XTR trim and you’ll also benefit from dual-zone climate control and a head-up display, which projects key driving data such as your speed onto the windscreen, enabling you to view it without taking your eyes off the road. There’s also wireless smartphone charging and a 360-degree camera for improved all-round visibility, which comes in handy when parking or navigating busy city streets.

Safety

The Mk3 Citroën Berlingo Multispace’s safety rating is based on the performance of its sister vehicle, the Peugeot Rifter. In 2018 it was given four stars by industry experts Euro NCAP, with scores of 91% and 81% respectively for adult and child occupant protection. Families with a trio of youngsters can safely fit three child seats abreast thanks to the vehicle’s width and the inclusion of ISOFIX mounting points on all three rear seats.

In addition to front and side airbags, standard features include lane keeping assist, which can steer the vehicle back on course if it drifts from its lane. There’s also active safety braking, which helps to prevent low-speed collisions.

Citroën Berlingo Multispace Flair XTR

Opt for the top-spec Flair XTR for a raft of additional kit. This includes 17-inch wheels, roof rails and gloss black accents on the exterior, as well as dual-zone climate control. The infotainment system adds sat nav and a 360-degree camera. There’s also a head-up display and wireless smartphone charging.
