The Citroen C4 Picasso is an MPV that offers drivers a spacious cabin and boot space with a stylish design. The five-seater handles well on the road and is economical to drive with efficient and high-performing engines. The C4 Picasso is a popular competitor for other MPVs and small SUVs on the market such as the Renault Scenic, Mazda CX-5, Ford C-MAX and the Volkswagen Touran.

Citroën C4 Picasso updates and facelifts

First launched in 2006, the Citroën C4 Picasso was updated in 2013. In 2016 it was given a facelift which gave the exterior a subtle redesign to the body kit including the bumpers.

In the interior, a new touchscreen infotainment system was introduced, compatible with MirrorLink and Apple CarPlay technologies. In 2018 the Citroën C4 Picasso was renamed the C4 SpaceTourer, and the 1.6-litre BlueHDi engines were replaced with 1.5-litre BlueHDi engines. In 2022, Citroën reduced the trims down to just the Sense and Shine trim levels. The engine range was also cut down to just two engines; a 1.5-litre diesel and a 1.2-litre petrol engine.

Practicality and style of the car

The Citroën C4 Picasso offers drivers a large 537-litre boot that can easily be expanded to 1,851 litres by folding down the rear seats. The boot can also be enlarged by simply sliding the rear row of seats forward, expanding the boot to 630 litres while keeping all five seats in use.

In comparison to rivals, the C4 Picasso offers a larger boot because of the sliding rear seats, beating the Mazda CX-5 mid-sized SUV, which offers 522 litres. Also offering 37 litres more than offered by the VW Golf SV.

Loading and unloading bulky items into the boot is easy with the wide opening door, flat loading space and low lip. Lashing points are located around the edges of the boot so heavy items can be tied down securely. There is also a load cover for preventing people from seeing into the boot when parked, adding extra security.

Running costs

The Citroën C4 Picasso falls into insurance groups 14 to 25 out of 50, depending on the engine and trim chosen. It has an annual road tax of £200. Compared to its rivals, the insurance groups and road tax are about average, with the Ford C-MAX falling into groups 10 to 27 and the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer falling into a higher bracket of 22 to 33.

How a used Citroën C4 Picasso drives

Since reducing the engine line-up in 2022, Citroën offers drivers a 1.2-litre PureTech petrol engine which can put down 128bhp, mated to a manual gearbox. This achieves 0 to 62mph in 10.1 seconds and returns up to 56.5mpg.

Before 2022, a 1.2-litre PureTech petrol engine was available. It puts down 108bhp and achieves 0 to 62mph in 11.5 seconds. It offers a fuel economy 55.4mpg. There is also a 1.6-litre THP petrol engine which puts down 163bhp. This achieves 0 to 62mph in 8.4 seconds and returns up to 56.5mpg.

The range of diesel engines was also reduced in both 2018 and 2022. On iterations before 2018, you can find one of two 1.6-litre four-cylinder BlueHDi diesel engines outputting either 99bhp or 118bhp. These achieve 0 to 62mph in 12.7 and 11.2 seconds respectively and return between 56.5mpg and 74.3mpg.

There is also a 161bhp 2.0-litre BlueHDi engine which achieves 0 to 62mph in 8.6 seconds. This engine returns between 65.7–68.9mpg.

In models produced after 2022, there are two diesel engines available. The 1.5-litre BlueHDi engine can put down 129bhp and achieves 0 to 62 in 9.8 seconds. This has a good fuel economy, returning between 64.2mpg and 74.3mpg. There is also the 2.0-litre BlueHDi which is capable of 148bhp and completes 0 to 62mph in 10.1 seconds. This engine returns between 55.4mpg and 70.6mpg.

Features you can expect in a Citroën C4 Picasso

Interior

The interior of the C4 Picasso is stylish and almost futuristic with its sloping dashboard. Furnished with high-quality material and soft-touch plastics the cabin has a premium feel to it.

Comfort within the cabin of the Citroën C4 Picasso is plentiful. The large windows help to increase driver visibility as well as make the interior feel spacious and light. The three rear seats have plenty of legroom, and since there is no transmission tunnel even the middle seat has good amounts of legroom. The rear seats can also independently slide back and forth for boot flexibility and passenger adjustment.

Storage is also plentiful in the C4 Picasso. In the front, there is a good-sized glove box, a large bin in the centre console, drawers under the front seats, cup holders and deep door bins. In the rear, there are large door bins and storage nets on the back of the front seats for storing personal items and entertainment devices. The Flair trim adds extra storage areas in the rear, including footwell storage space and tray tables on the back of the front seats.

The dashboard comes with a dual-screen layout with two central digital displays. The top 12-inch screen is a digital instrument cluster that displays car data. On higher trim levels, this screen comes with some alternative displays so you can choose the best layout for your needs.

Technology

The infotainment system comes in two sizes depending on the trim level, as the Feel and Flair trim upgrades the 7-inch screen to a 12-inch screen. This comes with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink smartphone connectivity so you can access personal music libraries and contact books.

USB and Bluetooth connectivity as well as a DAB radio also come with the infotainment system for onboard entertainment and connectivity. The infotainment system comes with a touchscreen interface which is used to navigate the menu and control car functions, such as music and climate control. There are also controls located on the steering wheel so you can adjust functions when driving easily.

The Citroën C4 Picasso comes with several driving assistance features available. The blind spot detection LED light strips on the door mirrors alert you to vehicles or pedestrians in the car’s blind spots. There are lane departure warning alerts and radar-guided adaptive cruise control, which automatically adjusts the distance between the car in front to maintain a safe distance. Adaptive headlights also feature, which automatically switch high beam off when there is an oncoming car.

Safety

Awarded a full five stars on the Euro NCAP safety tests, the Citroën C4 Picasso also scored highly on adult and child occupant protection, scoring 86% and 88% respectively. The C4 Picasso scored higher on child protection than most of its rivals, including the Ford C-MAX with 60% and Renault Scenic with 82%.

Safety features include stability control, which keeps the driver in control and on the road as well as a series of protective airbags located in the front and rear. Other safety features can include autonomous emergency braking which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a collision. The C4 Picasso can also come with a forward collision alert which uses front sensors to alert the driver of an impending collision. Parking sensors and a reversing camera can also feature and help drivers to park safely.
