Honda Civic updates and facelifts

White Honda Civic from the front

The Civic has gone through numerous generations, with the Mk10 arriving in 2017. It was launched with two turbocharged petrol engine options, and joined by the high-performance Civic Type R later the same year. In 2018 a diesel engine was added to the range, as was a saloon version.

The Mk10 Civic was given a facelift in 2020, when it received fresh alloy wheel designs and new colour choices. Then in 2022, the Mk11 model arrived, offering a full hybrid powertrain. As a self-charging car, there’s no need to plug in the Civic e:HEV, but you’ll still enjoy the benefits of lower emissions and peppy performance. It delivers a smooth motoring experience too and is near-silent whenever you rely purely on electric power to drive it.

The Civic’s striking fastback body style have ensured it appeals to modern drivers of all ages, while its roomy interior and generous equipment levels make it a top choice for families and business users alike.

Practicality and style of the car

The Honda Civic delivers an assured drive around town, being compact enough to slide easily into tight parking spaces and boasting impressive efficiency. Whether you’re taking the kids to school, picking up the weekly shopping or heading out on a day trip with friends, you’ll find it reliable and accommodating.

The Mk10 Civic features a 478-litre boot, which is well above average for the C-segment in which it sits with other cars such as the Volkswagen Golf and Toyota Corola. Opt for the Mk11 Civic e:HEV and the boot space sits at 410-litres, which is still highly competitive, being 30 litres more than the Golf and 97 litres more than the Corolla. With the rear seats dropped, cargo volume grows to 1,220-litres.

The hatchback’s 5-door body ensures straightforward access to the rear passenger compartment, where occupants will have plenty of legroom. Indeed, compared to the Kia Ceed, Toyota Corolla and Volkswagen Golf, the Mk11 Civic provides more overall room in its cabin. The middle rear seat is best suited to a child but will accommodate an adult on short drives. There are lots of useful cubbies too, enabling you to safely stow smartphones, sunglasses and more.

Running costs

As with any model, the Honda Civic occupies a range of insurance groups depending on trim level and engine type. Hatchbacks from 2017 onwards sit in groups 15-22, while saloons occupy groups 15-19. Opt for the e:HEV and you’re looking at group 28. Most models built from 2017 incur the standard road tax rate of £180 per year. It’s an affordable car to maintain too, with plenty of servicing options to suit your needs and driving style.

Choose a Mk10 Civic (2017-2022) and you’ll have a choice of several petrol engines, beginning with the 1.0-litre, 124bhp turbo unit, which delivers 200Nm of torque and takes you to a top speed of 129mph. There’s also a 1.5-litre option with 180bhp, which achieves 0-62mph in 8.2 seconds when paired with manual transmission. The 1.6-litre diesel produces 120bhp and 300Nm of torque, propelling it from 0-62mph in 10 seconds. Fuel economy reaches an impressive 80.7mpg on selected engines.

All Mk11 Honda Civics have a self-charging hybrid powertrain. This pairs a 2.0-litre petrol engine with an output of 141bhp with a 40bhp electric motor. This produces a combined output of 181bhp and 315Nm of torque.

One of the many benefits of hybrid technology is the delivery of instant torque, which enables enhanced acceleration. The Civic E:HEV can accelerate from 0-62mph in as little as 7.9 seconds, and is paired with e-CVT automatic transmission. This continuously analyses vehicle speed, engine power and road conditions to select the most efficient gear ratio at any given time, making for a smooth motoring experience. The powertrain is Euro 6D compliant and returns a combined fuel economy of 56.5mpg, with emissions reaching as low as 108g/km.

If you choose the hot-hatch Type R model – the latest Mk6 variant was released in 2022 – it’s powered by a 2.0-litre VTEC Turbo engine which is paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. This produces a peak output of 325bhp and 420Nm of torque, facilitating a 0-62mph time of just 5.4 seconds, and a top speed of 171mph.

Features you can expect in a Honda Civic

Interior

Honda Civic interior front seats, centre console, gear selector, dashboard, infotainment screen and steering wheel

The five-seat Honda Civic offers plenty of space, offering occupants plenty of legroom, as well as a decent amount of headroom. Adults can fit in the outermost rear seats, but on long journeys the car is better suited to families. Several storage cubbies feature throughout the cabin, including expansive door pockets, a large glovebox and cupholders located between the front seats.

A 60/40 split-folding rear bench offers flexibility when it comes to carrying various combinations of passengers and luggage. For instance, you might choose to have one rear seat folded so that you can transport long items while simultaneously accommodating a rear-seat passenger.

The Honda Civic’s cabin has an upmarket feel with quality finishes and soft-touch surfaces. The Mk10 features a display screen integrated into the dash, while on Mk11 variants it has a ‘floating’ position. A multifunction steering wheel makes operation of the car’s functions intuitive, while the ergonomic driver’s seat ensures optimal comfort no matter how long the journey.

The Honda Civic Mk10 was tested by Euro NCAP in 2017, when it was awarded a 4-star rating. The Mk11 achieved a full five stars, with scores of 89% and 87% for adult and child occupant protection respectively. Front and side airbags come as standard, as do a pair of ISOFIX child seat mounting points in the outer rear seats. A host of standard driver-assistance features include Lane Keeping Assist System, which helps to prevent you straying from your lane while driving on the motorway, and Autonomous Emergency Braking.

Choose the Mk11 Civic and you’ll also benefit from Traffic Sign Recognition System, which helps you keep to the speed limit, and Forward Collision Warning System, which alerts you to vehicles, pedestrians and other objects in your path, applying the brakes if you do not react in time. Also featured is Hill Start Assist, which prevents the vehicle from rolling uncontrolled whenever the engine is started on a slope.
