White Honda CR-V from the front

Hardy, stately and sophisticated, the Honda CR-V is a sleek vehicle that delivers on appearance and space. It’s a popular choice for both families and commuters, as it’s packed with useful features and designed to ensure all passengers ride in supreme comfort. Offering practicality and a high driving position, this mid-size, five-door SUV is spacious and powerful.

Many Honda CR-Vs are equipped with integrated infotainment screens, rear-view cameras, parking sensors, forward collision warnings and lane-keep assist systems for safety and convenience. As a result, they’re a real pleasure to drive and won’t add to the stress of rush-hour traffic.

Honda’s first SUV to be designed in house, the CR-V was launched exclusively in Japan in 1995. North America caught its first glimpse of the vehicle at the 1996 Chicago Auto Show and the CR-V hit US and UK roads in 1997. The CR-V was rolled out across the world in 2000 with facelifts for each market.

The CR-V’s popularity has only continued to grow worldwide since the 90s. Following the launch of the Mk4 in 2012 and Mk5 in 2017, the Honda CR-V has cemented its reputation as a comfortable, reliable car that’s popular across the world. A Honda CR-V balances a sophisticated design with ample room for storage, making it a strong contender for drivers seeking space, convenience and smooth handling.

With similarities to its Mk1 design, newer versions now benefit from technical features, safety improvements and comfort upgrades. Seven trims, including the EX, S, SE, S-T, Sport Line and SR are available. While older versions of the CR-V come with diesel or petrol engines, Honda’s investment in electric mobility means versions released after 2020 also offer hybrid options.

Practicality and style of the car

With lots of storage space and built-in digital features, the Honda CR-V is a practical and tech-enabled car, making it an attractive choice. Honda has chosen a slim transmission tunnel (a feature of the chassis) to provide maximum room for comfortable, ergonomic rear seating. Passengers have lots of legroom and ample space for belongings to stay neatly tucked away. If you need more room, easy-to-use levers make folding the second and third-row seats straightforward to store suitcases or flatpacks.

With 497 litres of boot space, and up to 1,692 litres with the rear seats folded down, the Honda CR-V offers plenty of space for your day-to-day requirements. Standing longer, taller and wider than competitors like the Volkswagen Tiguan and Peugeot 3008, the Honda CR-V is also one of the lengthiest cars in its segment.

You will find an electric tailgate on the EX trims and all trims have an easily accessible loading lip for heavy or bulky items.

Running costs

Like many SUVs, the Honda CR-V is a practical choice, with typically low running costs and generous storage capacity. These cars can generally be found in insurance groups 22E (entry-level two-wheel-drive Hybrid) to 25E (four-wheel-drive Hybrid Ex trim). Road tax differs between generations and the engine type you opt for. Mk2 road tax is between £320 and £395, while Mk3 road tax will be between £290 and £365. Mk4 and Mk5 models, meanwhile, will set you back between £35 and £320.

How a used Honda CR-V drives

The Honda CR-V might not look fast, but it can be surprisingly powerful. The 2012-2016 Mk4, which comes in four trims, has two engine types: a 153bhp 2.0 i-VTEC petrol unit that returns between 34.4 and 34.9mpg or a 148bhp 2.2 i-DTEC diesel that returns 43.5mpg. Both engines have manual or automatic gearboxes, with four-wheel drive fitted as standard on all trims except the 2.0 i-VTEC S and SE.

Larger, more powerful engines will suit drivers who regularly tow heavier loads of up to 1.5 tonnes. Meanwhile, a hybrid Honda CR-V is an excellent option if low running costs and fuel efficiency are a priority. The Honda CR-V achieves 0-62mph in 9.3 to 10 seconds.

Mk5 Honda CR-Vs (released between 2017 and 2022) use a hybrid engine, coupling a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor to generate a combined 184bhp and 315Nm of torque for fast acceleration, returning 33.6 to 49.6mpg.

Used Honda CR-Vs will be either front or four-wheel drive. If you’re in rugged terrain or live in the countryside, the four-wheel-drive option is a strong choice due to its power and road grip.

Mk4 (2012 – 2016) Honda CR-Vs achieve 36-64 mpg, while Mk5s (2017 – 2022) achieve 31.7-42.8mpg. For a typical, short trip, drivers can expect fuel economy for a used Honda CR-V to be around 32.5–38.2mpg, depending on the trim and engine choice.

The rear can accommodate adults and children comfortably. The car is available as a five or seven-seater, with the larger model an excellent option for large families. In the front, a high-set centre console means all controls are close to the wheel, including the manual or automatic gear stick. Drivers will feel in complete control thanks to the excellent road view, and the panoramic roof offers passengers another way to enjoy the scenery.

The dashboard is simple and easy to use, with both a touchscreen and tactile buttons making changing the settings when driving simple. Since 2012, all but the base-spec variants have seven-inch infotainment screens integrated into the dashboard. Older generations benefit from five-inch screens with head-up display options meaning you can stay completely aware and look across, not down, to check everything from navigation to entertainment.

An easy-to-use Garmin sat nav is found in SR trims and above, making it easy to travel to new destinations. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on SE trims and above, allowing you to control your entertainment and safely accept calls during your journey.

Safety

Honda has integrated safety features that were designed with drivers in mind. Euro NCAP awarded this car with a five-star safety rating in 2019. With an adult occupant protection score of 93% and child occupant protection score of 83%, the Honda CR-V is safer than two thirds of the cars Euro NCAP tested in 2019, outperforming competitors like the Ford Puma that achieved 75% and 84% respectively.

A wide range of safety features includes blind spot information with cross-traffic monitors, making overtaking safer and reducing the likelihood of accidents. Drivers also benefit from forward collision warnings, autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assistance, rear-view cameras, and front and rear parking sensors.
