Compact yet roomy, the Honda HR-V has a reputation for practicality dating back to its launch in 1999. In line with the burgeoning demand for SUVs in recent years, the HR-V has seen a surge in popularity among car buyers, particularly since the launch of the Mk2 in 2015.

Honda HR-V updates and facelifts

With spaciousness at the heart of its appeal, the Honda HR-V was awarded the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s highest accolade as its Top Safety Pick+ in 2022. As the SUV market continues to grow, the compact design of the HR-V can be credited for its enduring appeal as well as it having a sleeker feel than many of its competitors.

A facelifted version of the HR-V was launched in 2019. The Mk3 HR-V launched in 2021. It builds on the reputation of its predecessors as an attractive-looking car that doesn’t compromise on practicality. With the addition of its e:HEV hybrid powertrain, 1.5-litre petrol engine of the Mk2 is now paired with two electric motors driving the front wheels. It’s also self-charging, so you don’t need to plug in the HR-V to recharge the battery. The Mk3’s wider headlights and a more vertical nose further add to its desirable exterior.

Three trim levels are available: Elegance, Advance and Advance Style. A used Honda HR-V offers the choice of petrol, diesel or hybrid engines, while the updated 2023 edition boosts full EV credentials.

Practicality and style of the car

Boasting a roomy cabin across its Mk2 and Mk3 models, spaciousness is a trump card for the used Honda HR-V. Plenty of legroom maximises comfortability without sacrificing the larger boot space that is part and parcel of SUVs. At 470 litres, the boot is generous considering the compact feel of the car’s exterior. Lowering the ‘magic seats’ opens up a whole world of spacious possibilities, too, with 1,533 litres of space on offer – beating off rivals like the Renault Kadjar which offers 1,478 litres, 50 litres less than the HR-V.

At 4,340mm long, a used Honda HR-V may be slightly larger than the likes of the Renault Captur (4,227mm) and the Ford Puma (4,207mm). This extra length equates to greater cabin space.

Depending on the engine, the HR-V also offers a braked towing capacity of up to 1,400kg, making it an excellent option for those looking to tow a caravan or trailer.

Running costs

A used HR-V remains within an affordable insurance bracket. With various models sitting between groups 18 to 27 (out of 50), it’s reasonable to insure – and equally reasonable to run. The mpg of the Mk3 is 49.6mpg and 68.9mpg for diesel, while the hybrid offers 52.3mpg. Tax for the HR-V tends to sit at around £180 per year.

Used Honda HR-Vs are available with a range of 1.5-litre and 1.6-litre engines, including petrol, diesel or hybrid. Plus, the new HR-V is now available as a fully electric vehicle.

The Mk2, in production until 2021, was manufactured with either a 1.5-litre or 1.6-litre diesel engine, paired with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard. The latter was the more popular pick with new car buyers, with 120bhp and a punchy 300Nm of torque, with a 0-62mph time of 10.5 seconds. The petrol-powered Honda HR-V, meanwhile, delivers 130bhp and 155Nm of torque. Its Turbo Sport equivalent adds a little extra oomph at 180bhp and offers 42.2mpg- 42.8mpg. It also accelerates from 0-62mph in 11.8 seconds.

The updated Mk3 of the Honda HR-V adds a hybrid option into the mix, combining a 1.5-litre petrol engine with the e:HEV hybrid powertrain. As hybrids become increasingly commonplace in the SUV market, the HR-V has been built to compete. With an automatic gearbox, it delivers 129bhp and offers an impressive 52.3mpg with a 0-62mph time of 10.6 seconds. Plus, its CO2 emissions are low for an SUV, at 122g/km.

Features you can expect in a Honda HR-V

Interior

Honda HR-V interior front seats, centre console and gear selector, dashboard, infotainment screen displaying satnav, and the steering wheel

The HR-V’s cabin is well-built with high-quality materials and intuitive controls throughout. When in the driving seat, you’ll benefit from a high driving position, giving you a commanding view of the road. The multi-functional steering wheel available on the Mk2 and Mk3 features a cluster of hard-wearing plastic buttons, helping you interact with the HR-V’s infotainment system. Depending on the trim, the steering wheel will also come with heating functionality to make those winter drives more comfortable.

A used Honda HR-V is also a very comfortable model for all passengers. All seats in the cabin are half-synthetic and half-cloth for breathable comfort, and they also offer plenty of support. In the Mk3, the front seats come with eight-way electric adjustability, making it easy to settle into long journeys.

There’s ample legroom throughout, ensuring even four adult passengers feel comfortable. And for family journeys, two rear ISOFIX points make it easy to attach child seats safely. It’s also easy to keep the interior tidy thanks to the range of front and rear storage cubbies. The glovebox is large enough to hold most handheld accessories and there is a cubby on the centre console which can securely store your smartphone. The door bins are also deep enough for most small bottles.

Safety

As far as safety goes, it’s hard to look past a used Honda HR-V. Its recent recognition from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety as Top Safety Pick+ in 2022 underpins its reputation as one of the safest SUVs on the road. This reputation has been upheld since the launch of the Mk2 in 2015, which was awarded a five-star rating by Euro NCAP. Scoring highly for adult and child occupant safety, 86% and 79% respectively.
