Our latest used Hyundai BAYON cars in stock now

The Hyundai Bayon is a subcompact crossover SUV. First unveiled in 2021, it is Hyundai’s smallest SUV available on the European market and was designed to compete with other practical models like the SEAT Arona, Volkswagen T-Cross and Ford Puma.

It is based on Hyundai’s previous i20 Active model, but offers a larger size, more practicality and cabin technology. For this reason, the Hyundai Bayon is an excellent option if you’re looking for an efficient all-round model which is as equally well suited to family journeys as it is city driving.

The Bayon is powered by a select choice of petrol engines, all of which offer great performance and fuel economy. And thanks to its stylish looks and great value, it is an excellent choice for lots of different driving needs.

Hyundai Bayon updates and facelifts

First released in 2021, the Bayon borrows many of its underpinnings from the i20 Active model, while adding plenty of its own features. On the exterior, it boasts slim headlights and an angular design that gives it a unique profile. This helps the Bayon stand out from both the i20 Active and the Hyundai Kona, another of Hyundai’s small SUVs. As of 2023, the Hyundai Bayon has not yet received any facelifts or updates.

Practicality and style of the car

In the driving seat, there’s plenty of comfort due to the upholstery’s fabric construction and the appealing precision stitching offers a welcome touch of styling. There’s a reasonably high driving position and ample visibility thanks to the windshield’s raked-back design and narrow side pillars.

Keeping the cabin clutter-free is also easy thanks to a range of reasonably sized door bins, a lidded central container and a glovebox that is more than suitable for handheld items like sunglasses. There’s interior ambient lighting which helps keep the cabin well-lit while driving at night.

The Hyundai’s subcompact dimensions mean it has a length of 4,810mm, height of 1,500mm and width of 1,775mm. This makes it 584mm longer than the Ford Puma and 672mm longer than the SEAT Arona.

This greater length means the Hyundai Bayon can offer ample storage room. It has a standard boot space of 401 litres, this space can be expanded up to 1,205 litres by folding the rear seats down. The SEAT Arona, by comparison, only has an expanded capacity of 823 litres.

This model has reasonable towing power. There’s a maximum braked towing capacity of up to 1,100kg which is enough for some small compartments and trailers.

Running costs

The Hyundai Bayon offers good value running costs, with its insurance groups ranging from 13 to 18. This is similar to its competitors, such as the Škoda Kamiq, which sits in groups 10 to 20, and the SEAT Arona which sits in groups 8 to 19.

The Bayon qualifies for a maximum annual road tax of up to £180. This is the same as the SEAT Arona and Škoda Kamiq.

How a used Hyundai Bayon drives

The Hyundai Bayon is available with two petrol engines, both of which benefit from mild hybrid assistance. There is a 0.46kWh 48v lithium-ion battery that uses regenerative technology to save power used while braking and to redivert it to other areas of the car.

The entry-level petrol engine is a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder engine. It generates 99bhp and 172Nm of torque. It offers good economy with 53.3mpg and accelerates from 0-62mph in 10.7 seconds. Its top speed is 112mph.

The other engine is also a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder option and generates the same torque. It is configured to produce 118bhp, returns 52.3 to 53.3mpg and goes from 0-62mph in 10.4 seconds. It has a top speed of 115mph.

Both engines are available with a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed automatic. The manual option uses Hyundai’s clutch-by-wire configuration, meaning that the clutch isn’t directly connected to the gearbox. It makes for a smoother ride and seamless gear changing.

The Hyundai Bayon’s suspension is good and dampens most bumps in the road. And with relatively hushed engines, the Bayon offers a quiet comfortable cabin as well as good performance.

Features you can expect in a Hyundai Bayon

Interior

The interior of the Hyundai Bayon is distinctive and full of character, with good-quality materials furnishing the main surfaces and interfaces. You’ll find plenty of head and leg space across all five seats, making the Bayon well-suited to longer journeys even when all seats are occupied. There is a leather steering wheel with a well-arranged cluster of hard plastic buttons, as well as smooth plastic buttons across the centre console.

On the centre console, you’ll find a touchscreen display between 8 and 10.25 inches, depending on which trim you opt for. This screen contains the Bayon’s infotainment system, which comes with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto connectivity, and a DAB radio. The menus are quick to load and easy to navigate, but there are also plastic shortcut buttons underneath this display to quickly take you to the screens you want.

You’ll also find a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. This screen shows your speed, fuel level, fuel economy, RPM, and drive mode. It has distinctive blue backlighting that makes it handy for night-time driving.

Technology

The Bayon offers a range of assistive technologies to enhance the driver’s convenience and safety whilst on board. You’ll find a driver attention alert that detects deviations in your driving and triggers an alert to suggest you take a break. There’s an emergency call system that can automatically alert emergency services in the event of an accident. There is also hill start assist that holds the car until you’re ready to pull away on inclines.

Lane keep assist keeps you centred while driving on motorways and parking sensors make it easier to reverse into tight spots. The top-level Ultimate trim comes with blind spot warning that alerts you to objects that aren’t in your field of vision, as well as a lane follow assistance system. This uses cameras to monitor lane markings and will help make small adjustments to the steering to keep the car in lane.

Safety

The Hyundai Bayon received a four-star safety rating from Euro NCAP, achieving an adult safety score of 76% and a child safety score of 82%. Among its range of safety equipment, there are front and side airbags, a belt pretensioner and loader, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection and tyre pressure monitoring. There are two ISOFIX points on the outer rear seats for safe and secure attachment of child seats.
