First launched in 2006, the Hyundai i30 is a mid-sized family car that has been manufactured as a three and five-door hatchback, estate and liftback.

Hyundai i30 updates and facelifts

The Mk2 was released in 2011, followed by the Mk3 in 2016. The third generation arrived in 2020, featuring slimmer headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels and new technology, such a touchscreen infotainment system and digital instrument cluster.

The i30 is as comfortable getting around urban streets as it is travelling on the motorway. With a range of petrol and diesel options available, you can opt for the more price-friendly 1.0-litre petrol of the Mk2 at the entry-level end of the scale, rising to the higher torque Mk3 1.5-litre petrol, or the 1.6-litre turbo diesel, for more power.

Named CarBuyer’s Car of the Year in 2012, the i30 has gone from strength to strength. Through its range of efficient engines and family suitability, it competes well with the Volkswagen Golf, the Vauxhall Astra and the Ford Focus. However, the enduring popularity of a used Hyundai i30 is thanks to its reputation as a practical family hatchback that’s a little more stylish than some of its rivals.

Practicality and style of the car

The i30 has a spacious and comfortable interior thanks to its sizeable dimensions. Its length of 4,335mm, height of 1,415mm and width of 1,795mm make it 51mm longer and 6mm wider than the Volkswagen Golf.

This good size means that passengers enjoy plenty of comfort inside the cabin, with front seat legroom coming to 1,067mm and rear seat legroom at 880mm.

The boot of the Mk3 Fastback can hold up to 450 litres, beating the 380-litre boot of a Volkswagen Golf by 70 litres. The hatchback version’s boot is also bigger than the Golf with a capacity of 395 litres. With the seats down, boot space in the Fastback rises to 1,351 litres (compared to the Golf’s 1,270 litres), so its roominess really trumps that of the standard hatchback.

A Hyundai i30 also has reasonable towing capacity. The 1.0-litre petrol can tow up to 700kg, which is enough for a small trailer. The 1.5-litre variants can tow up to 1,000kg for slightly heavier loads. The diesel engine has a maximum towing capacity of 1,500kg – enough for a compact caravan or trailer.

Running costs

In terms of running costs, the used i30 remains competitive. Insurance groups for the Mk3 range between 8 and 18. This compares favourably with other cars in the i30’s class. Tax groups for the i30 also vary. Some Mk3 trims cost as little as £20 or £35 per year, rising to £180 depending on the year and trim.

How a used Hyundai i30 drives

If you’re considering a used Hyundai i30 you have a broad range of engine options to choose from. Across all three generations, there are both petrol and diesel engines available, as well as two mild hybrid engines available on the Mk3.

In the Mk2’s petrol range, there is a 1.6-litre petrol engine which generates 118bhp and achieves up to 44.8mpg. It can be paired with a six-speed manual gearbox, with the option of an automatic gearbox – perfect if you’re often driving in heavy traffic. For a little more punch, there is also a more powerful 1.6 CRDi diesel engine – producing 136bhp – which is also available with manual or automatic gearbox options and achieves up to 78mpg.

The arrival of the Mk3 in 2016 introduced a wider range of petrol engine options. The entry-level 1.0-litre is a great for more economical buyers as it returns up to 61.4mpg. The N-line has a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine that produces 157bhp and reaches 0-62mph in just 8.4 seconds, while still returning over 40mpg. The diesel option for the Mk3 is also powerful, offering 134bhp and achieving 0-62mph in just 10 seconds.

Mild hybrid technology is featured across all of the Mk3’s petrol engines. By absorbing excess energy used while braking, these mild hybrids are able to push the fuel economy of these engines further and are an excellent option if you are looking for excellent fuel economy.

A minor facelift in 2020 also saw the repositioning of the infotainment buttons for ease of access. On the outside, this update added a new bumper below a wider grille, along with new LED headlamps.
