Kia e-Niro updates and facelifts

A practical SUV, the Kia e-Niro stands alongside plug-in hybrid and self-charging hybrid sibling models. In 2023, the e-Niro was rebranded as the Niro EV in Europe to match its North American and Asian counterparts.

Practicality and style of the car

The e-Niro's boot capacity is an impressive 451 litres, which is more than enough for the weekly shop or to accommodate luggage for a family getaway. If you need more space, folding the rear seats down opens up the capacity to 1,405 litres – enough space for bicycles, sports equipment and more. The parcel shelf is retractable and fits neatly in the under-floor compartment, meaning you don't have to compromise on space when fitting in bulky items.

With a low boot lip, getting things in and out of the boot is easy, and thanks to clips you can securely tie items down. You can carry more in the e-Niro than in its hybrid siblings, with the self-charging hybrid offering 382 litres and the plug-in hybrid offering 324 litres of space.

The interior of the e-Niro delivers one of the most comfortable experiences among cars in its price range. There is plenty of legroom and headroom in the front and back, with each seat easily accommodating tall adults. For those with little ones, two ISOFIX mounts are positioned on the rear outer seats to make attaching child car seats easier.

The e-Niro's 2023 second generation, the Niro EV, is rated to tow up to 750kg.

Running costs

The Kia e-Niro falls between insurance groups 20 and 29 (out of 50), which is average among its competitors. For comparison, the Hyundai Kona Electric falls between groups 22 and 27.

As an electric vehicle, the e-Niro is exempt from road tax. The all-electric e-Niro offers an impressive driving range of over 250 miles on a single charge, making the week’s commutes and longer road trips stress-free.

How a used Kia e-Niro drives

The Kia e-Niro is available in two battery options. The first is a 39kWh battery. This produces 134bhp and gets from 0-62mph in 9.5 seconds. Reaching a top speed of 96mph, this power output means you won't struggle on motorway. Being all-electric, there are no fuel emissions to worry about either.

The other option is the more powerful 64kWh battery. Producing 201bhp, this configuration takes you from 0-62mph in just 7.5 seconds. With a top speed of 104mph, you will feel at home taking your e-Niro around cities and down motorways. Its responsive throttle means you can navigate tricky inner-city driving with confidence and ease. An excellent options for cost and climate-conscious drivers.

Being an electric vehicle, the e-Niro has 395Nm of torque instantly available, making it quick off the mark. It has a single-speed automatic gearbox and comes with a unique rotary gear selector, which is used to switch between drive, reverse and neutral. There are three driving modes: Eco, Comfort and Sport. In the Sport driving mode, the throttle is tightened, increasing the responsiveness further, while Eco lightens the steering and offers a more energy-efficient driving experience.

Features you can expect in a Kia e-Niro

Interior

Inside the e-Niro is a cosy cabin with the doors, dashboard and central console finished in soft-touch materials. There is plenty of storage around the cabin for all your items, with roomy door bins, a large glove compartment and space under the central armrest. There is also a space in the central dash for your smartphone, offering wireless charging for compatible phones and a choice of two USB ports and a 12v outlet.

An eight-inch touchscreen infotainment display shows the sat nav, rear parking camera and smartphone functionality afforded by Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. All e-Niros also come with DAB radio and Bluetooth, also shown on the display.

The Kia e-Niro is a comfortable ride for all occupants, with ample space for five adults, making it perfect for families with younger or older children. The driving seat is electrically adjustable. Combined with the steering wheel's rake and reach adjustments, drivers of all sizes can find the right position for them. Both front seats are also heated, as well as the steering wheel, taking the edge off on cold days.

Technology

The Kia e-Niro offers pre-heating through scheduling or app integration, meaning you can step into a warm car even on cold days. Keyless entry also means you don't need to fumble around for keys—getting in and setting off is an uninterrupted, seamless experience.

On the go, the e-Niro uses regenerative braking technology, returning power to the battery when you take your foot off the accelerator. Paddles on either side of the steering wheel allow you to change the intensity of the regenerative braking. Higher power generation slows the vehicle faster, giving more control at low speeds. Choosing a lower intensity means the regenerative braking is less powerful and the vehicle takes longer to slow down when you take your foot off the accelerator.

While using the in-built navigation, the e-Niro displays how much range you have left depending on the charge in the batteries and indicates nearby charging points. While on the road, adaptive cruise control helps take the strain off longer journeys, and thanks to automatic lights and wipers, you won't be caught out by sudden changes in weather.

When the journey is over, front and rear parking sensors and a rear parking camera can help you park with ease, made easier by the light steering and a turning circle rivalling the Nissan Leaf.

Safety

Euro NCAP scored the Niro range four out of a possible five stars in the 2022 safety test. This increased to a full five stars with the safety pack, scoring 91% for adult occupancy protection and 84% for child occupants.

There are plenty of airbags inside to keep all occupants safe, with seatbelt reminders to make sure everybody is travelling safely and responsibly.
