Kia XCeed updates and facelifts

Based on the Kia Ceed hatchback, the XCeed has a stylish and sporty look, filling a gap in the South Korean manufacturer’s range. With its sharp aesthetics, the Kia XCeed competes against rivals like the Mercedes-Benz GLA and the Audi Q2. Its facelift in 2022 brought an impressive selection of standard features across its four available trims: the 2, GT-Line, 3 and GT-Line S.

With touchscreen infotainment screens included with all trims and solidly designed interiors, the Kia XCeed gives a quality feel with a value-for-money price tag. This five-seater small SUV achieves first-class style with impressive technology at a price that makes it a strong choice in its class.

There are two engine options across the four trim lines: a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a 1.6-litre plug-in hybrid engine. While the 1.5-litre turbocharged engine performs smoothly and quietly during daily commutes, the 1.6-litre hybrid engine’s 30-mile battery-only aspect makes it a perfect companion in emissions-free towns.

Practicality and style of the car

Based on the Ceed model, the Kia XCeed marks a significant improvement regarding space. Increased by 31 litres, the XCeed provides a 426-litre boot capacity, while folded seats take this up to 1,378 litres. The XCeed has far more boot space than similar cars on the market that sit closer to 400 litres (such as the Audi Q2). Kia has widened its audience with its increased storage capacity, as the XCeed has plenty of room for the weekly shop and school bags, as it does for luggage when you take those longer trips away.

With a length of 4,395mm, the Kia XCeed is exactly the same length as the Mazda CX-30. With its increased size from the Kia Ceed model, there is plenty of room for four or five adults and ample room for two adults and two to three children. There are cubbies in all four doors that will accommodate easy-to-locate belongings. ISOFIX anchors are located on the outer rear seats, meaning you can drive with ease, knowing the little ones are safe and secure in the back. With great fuel efficiency and space for all the family, the Kia XCeed speaks to families and individuals seeking a stylish, roomy car without a hefty price tag.

Models fitted with the now discontinued 1.0-litre petrol or the 1.6-litre diesel engines will tow a braked trailer weight of up to 1,200kg. The 1.5-litre petrol tows 1,410kg and the PHEV has a towing limit of 1,300kg. Your bikes or jet skis won't be left behind with the Kia XCeed, with its ability to tow small-medium caravans too.

Running costs

Kia has clearly considered owners’ running costs when designing the XCeed model and the cost-efficiency of the PHEV plug-in hybrid engine shows that. With carbon emissions rated at 32g/km, it appeals to company car drivers and city drivers with the additional bonus of no road tax to pay. The electric battery holds 30 minutes of driving, making it perfect in cities. Running costs are kept down with insurance, too, as it falls in group 15.

The 1.5-litre petrol engine generally sits in insurance groups 17 or 18, with road tax costing £180 per year for 2019 models onwards. Compared to the Mercedes-Benz GLA, which sits in insurance groups 25 to 37, the petrol engine is significantly more cost-effective than other models it competes with.

There are two engine options for the current Mk2 Kia XCeed model: the turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and the PHEV engine that combines a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, a 60hp electric motor and an 8.9kWh battery.

Introduced in 2021, the 1.5-litre petrol engine achieves 160hp and 253Nm of torque, making it a brilliantly efficient option. With a figure of 44.8mpg, this engine is impressive, considering it is not electronically assisted. This engine comes with a seven-speed automatic gearbox and reaches 62mph in 8.9 seconds.

The PHEV engine produces a combined output of 141hp with 256Nm of torque – notable figures that will satisfy most drivers looking at cars in this class. Unlike the petrol engine, this one operates with a six-speed automatic gearbox and reaches 62mph in 10.6 seconds. This economically conscious engine is an excellent option for those travelling through zero-emission zones regularly.

Features you can expect in a Kia XCeed

With rigorous safety technology, driver-assistance, fine-tuned entertainment technology and a fine eye for detail, the Kia XCeed excels in many areas.

Interior

Kia is known for creating high-quality, sleek interiors and the Kia XCeed certainly sustains that reputation. With a sloping roofline, clean dashboard and sophisticated upholstery, its aesthetic will charm and excite most drivers before they take to the wheel. The XCeed caters to young families and individuals who require room for additional equipment or a comfortable experience on their commute to work or school.

Technology

There are plenty of features in the Kia XCeed to keep your passengers happy. Depending on which trim you choose, an infotainment screen is mounted on the dashboard, measuring between 8.0 and 10.25 inches. Drivers have a traditional rev-counter and speedometer, centralised behind the steering wheel, which also displays trip information and sat nav directions.

Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard features in all trims, meaning bespoke entertainment is at your fingertips. A six-speaker audio system and Bluetooth with voice recognition are standard equipment and can be found in all available trims. The flagship trim, the GT-Line S, is upgraded with a more impactful eight-speaker system. You will also find wireless phone charging and reverse cameras as you go through the trim levels.

Safety

The Kia XCeed is not only impressive to look at, but it also contains a wide range of safety equipment that earned it four out of five stars on the Euro NCAP safety rating in 2019. However, higher-specification trims, like the GT-Line, with the optional safety pack, were awarded a full five stars.

Safety features include cruise control, blind spot monitoring and traffic sign recognition. It's important to note that vigorous safety tests showed how stable the cabin stayed upon impact, specifically protecting all passengers’ knees, earning an adult occupant rating of 88%. The XCeed received an 85% child occupant rating.
