Why choose Arnold Clark?
The affordable SEAT Toledo spent more than 25 years winning the hearts of family drivers. The model was first launched in the early nineties. It saw four generations under the Spanish brand. These included a liftback, a notchback saloon and a hatchback. Production of the model ceased in the UK altogether in 2018.
The Toledo sits in the marketplace as an impressively reliable family car. It upholds many of SEAT's key model characteristics: economical, well designed and spacious. Across its different generations, you’ll find a selection of efficient engines. These range from 1.2-litre units to 1.6-litre diesel ones. Its rivals include the Škoda Rapid, Vauxhall Astra and Kia Cee’d.
Despite its many years on the UK market, the SEAT Toledo has often flown under the radar as a reliable, efficient and practical family hatchback. A top safety rating, paired with its ample space and economical price tag, make the SEAT Toledo a popular car for family drivers.
SEAT Toledo updates and facelifts
The first SEAT Toledo arrived on the UK market in October 1991. SEAT launched it at the London Motorfair. The model was originally a fastback saloon. Other body types over the years include a notchback saloon, a hatchback sedan, a three-box saloon and a family hatchback. The Mk1's angular design was credited to its manufacturer, the Volkswagen Group. The Toledo the first SEAT vehicle to be developed under the German company’s ownership.
Seven years later in 1999, the Mk2 arrived and it was visibly different. It featured a more rounded exterior design that set it apart from its predecessor. The Mk2 Toledo was a family saloon with an upgraded interior and an efficient range of petrol and diesel engines. Again, the model was built on a Volkswagen platform.
An Mk3 replaced it in 2004, in the form of a totally new-look vehicle altogether. The Mk3 was more compact and sportier looking. Different to the larger, family sized Mk1 and Mk2 versions. The Mk3 switched out the saloon design and added sporty exterior bodywork to give it a more modern feel. It retained its five-door format. It was the first Toledo which gained the hatchback label.
The Mk4 SEAT Toledo came to the UK market in 2013. It is this version that is most frequently seen on UK roads today. This was the final version of the SEAT Toledo produced. The Mk4 is available with a range of diesel and petrol options. These range from 1.0-litre to 1.6-litre. This iteration received some minor design updates across its five years on the UK market. Body styles included a saloon and estate. Moving away from the compact nature of the Mk3 to a more rounded, family-friendly model. Across its four generations, the SEAT Toledo sold more than a million units globally. The Mk4 remained in production until 2018. After more than a quarter of a century, SEAT removed the Toledo from its sales line up in 2018.
The SEAT Toledo offers a comfortable drive across all its engine options. While the car is light – coming in at 1250kg – it feels sturdy on the roads thanks to its well-tuned suspension. The model can also tackle tight urban spaces with ease due to reliable handling. It's a perfect smaller family car for the daily commute or the school run.
Practicality and style of the car
The SEAT Toledo Mk4 is incredibly roomy, both in the cabin and the boot. Despite its hatchback label, the storage room is greater than many of its rivals. Boot capacity comes in at 550 litres even with the seats still up. That beats many of its competitors such as the Hyundai i30 (395 litres), the Kia Ceed (395 litres) and even the Vauxhall Astra (422 litres). Fold the rear seats down, and you’ll get even more space with 1,148 litres of capacity.
The Toledo Mk4 can hold four adult passengers comfortably, with room for a fifth in the rear. The saloon styling of the car means there’s plenty of legroom, and headroom is also generous. SEAT has also made the most of the Toledo’s interior to maximise storage space throughout the cabin. Side door bins have been added to reduce the clutter throughout and there are bottle holders up front. Higher-level trims have a centralised storage space included too. Plus, with large windows, all-round visibility is optimal, making parking easier than in many smaller cars.
Braked towing capacity for the Toledo comes in at 1,200kg, so it can manage plenty of mid-sized caravans. With space inside and scope for towing, it’s a great car for a family weekend away.
Running costs
A large part of the appeal of the SEAT Toledo is its affordability. It costs less than some of its main rivals, and its fuel consumption is competitive too. It also sits between insurance groups 8 and 20, while the Vauxhall Astra can go all the way up to group 24.
Road tax is good value too. Some models incur no road tax charge at all, while many sit around the £35 per year mark. Others go up to £180, but no models cost more than that.
How a used SEAT Toledo drives
A range of petrol and diesel engines are available on the Toledo. All offering a refined and comfortable driving experience. The petrol engines begin with a 1.2-litre that generates 73bhp and achieves 46mpg. Other petrol options include turbocharged alternatives to the 1.2-litre. These can deliver either 84bhp or 103bhp. The former goes from 0-62mph in 11.8 seconds and returns 55.4mpg. The latter gets to 62mph in just over 10 seconds and returns 57.6mpg.
The top petrol engine for the Toledo is a 1.4-litre TSI. This engine comes with a seven-speed automatic gearbox as standard. It can deliver 120bhp and a range-topping 0-62mph time of 9.5 seconds. It has economy of 48.7mpg.
Diesel options for the Mk4 Toledo include 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre variations. The former comes with both manual and automatic transmission options. These can deliver 72mpg and 71mpg respectively. There is also just 0.1 seconds between their 0-62mph times, with the manual slightly quicker at 11.7 seconds. The 1.6-litre diesel steps up the power further. With a five-speed manual gearbox, it can reach 0-62mpg in 10.4 seconds – and it can also return an impressive 64mpg. With Volkswagen engineering, the mechanics are some of the best in class.
