A short-lived model in the world of crossover SUVs, it goes without saying that the Škoda Yeti has something of a cult following in the automotive industry. It’s also a pioneer in the crossover sector, with its distinctive design, hatchback-like driving experience and exceptional practicality appealing to a wide range of motorists and setting it apart from such competitors as the Nissan Qashqai and Honda CR-V.
The Škoda Yeti was first introduced in 2009 and enjoyed a production cycle until 2017. Since this time, the model has been replaced by the Czech manufacturer’s newer lineup of SUVs – Karoq, Kamiq and Kodiaq – but continues to be a popular option in the used car market thanks to its price tag, efficient engine options, and sheer volume of interior space, its iconic box-style design hinting at the level of headroom and luggage space available inside.
Indeed, there’s something daring and commendable about the aesthetic of the Škoda Yeti, steering away from the traditional looks of an SUV but retaining the compact feel – as well as driveability – of a hatchback. What’s more, selected editions of the Yeti provide four-wheel drive, and are capable of driving off-road – a feature many other SUVs have the look of being able to fulfil, but no more. Petrol and diesel engines pack plenty of punch too, so tackling any challenging environment is effortless without compromising on efficiency. The Škoda Yeti represents a great solution for adventure-seekers.
Škoda Yeti updates and facelifts
The Škoda Yeti underwent a subtle facelift in 2014, providing the model with an updated exterior design that featured a refreshed front grille and bumper, as well as more angular headlights and rear lights. It also introduced the Yeti Outdoor line, which features a ‘tougher’ aesthetic compared to the regular model. Most noticeably, this particular edition comes with black plastic sill guards and side mouldings.
Production of the Škoda Yeti ceased in 2017. This being a Škoda, however, you can rest assured of lasting build quality and reliability when buying second hand.
Practicality and style of the car
Such is the boxy nature of the Škoda Yeti’s design, it’s akin to a small city van except this is anything but a commercial vehicle. A hugely practical car for both families and active adventurers, the Yeti provides the utmost in comfort and capability, offering abundant interior space that supports both occupant and luggage requirements. With the elevated roofline, there’s probably more headroom available than in any other hatchback around, and the sense of spaciousness afforded by this high line makes the model feel far larger than the actual road space it occupies.
Whether you’re transporting four adults or a family of five, the Škoda Yeti provides ample legroom to complement its ample headroom. ISOFIX child seat fixtures on the outer rear seats also mean you can safely secure younger travellers with complete peace of mind, while the 40/20/40 configuration of the back row makes it adaptable for a host of needs.
The boot space in the Škoda Yeti is similarly flexible. A basic storage space of 416 cubic litres is more than enough for pushchairs, luggage and the weekly shop, while the folding seats open up a cavernous 1,760-litre space. Such capacity ensures that there are few rivals in either hatchback or SUV classes that can compete with the Yeti in terms of practicality.
Running costs
Choosing the Yeti ensures that you can benefit from great value for money, both in terms of purchase price and running costs. Fuel economy is as high as 62mpg, and CO2 emissions for selected engines are as low as 119g/km, resulting in road tax as low as £35 annually. Of course, more powerful engines incur greater expense, with a maximum charge of £365.
Insurance premiums The Škoda Yeti range falls between insurance groups 9 and 24 out of 50, so is on the lower end to insure and will incur low monthly or annual premiums for on-road protection.
How a used Škoda Yeti drives
Petrol and diesel engines are available with a range of power outputs, with varying levels of efficiency on offer. The petrol lineup includes 1.2-litre, 1.4-litre and 1.8-litre editions, with the former the most fuel efficient at 51.4-53.3mpg and producing up to 110bhp. Opt for the 1.4-litre edition and you can anticipate both 120bhp and 41.5mpg, while the 1.8 litre delivers 35.3–36.2mpg and 157bhp.
Switching focus to diesel models, 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre options are plentiful, with the larger of the two offering power outputs of 108, 140, 150 or 170bhp. Moreover, the 2.0-litre diesel is the most fuel efficient of the lot, providing a maximum economy of 64.2mpg. The 1.6-litre, meanwhile, is no less efficient. Even with the power output of 103bhp, it still achieves an exceptional 61.4mpg in terms of fuel economy, making this a cost-effective model to run.
The hatchback feel of the Škoda Yeti includes exceptional driving dynamics and responsive handling. What’s more, the four-wheel drive edition provides additional stability and traction on even the most challenging surfaces, meaning it can tackle sleet, snow, rain and mud with ease.

Features you can expect in a Škoda Yeti
While the practicality of the Škoda Yeti is perhaps obvious for all to see, there’s plenty more to the vehicle that will impress motorists. Even on the outside, the Yeti has much to offer. The elevated roofline contributes to the boxy, van-like silhouette of the vehicle, while practical roof rails are available for the fitting of roof boxes, bike racks, etc., increasing its capability further still. A wider grille, sharp LED lighting, and alloy wheel options, meanwhile, contribute to the distinctive look of the model.
