A highly practical MPV, the Volkswagen Sharan offers owners a comfortable and spacious cabin that is especially suited for those with growing families. The Volkswagen Sharan comes with a good amount of equipment as standard that makes it good value for money.

The Volkswagen Sharan competes well on the MPV market, rivalling the Citroën C4 SpaceTourer, the Ford Galaxy, the Ford S-MAX and the SEAT Alhambra in terms of both space and practicality.

Volkswagen Sharan updates and facelifts

Originally launched in 1996, the Volkswagen Sharan was designed by Volkswagen to rival other MPVs on the European market. Four years later, in 2000, the Sharan received a facelift where it kept the original sloped front design but added some extra equipment, such as a new dashboard design and was now offered with seven seats as standard.

The Mk2 was launched in 2010. The Sharan received a new exterior design which gave it a sharper and more modern look, while on the inside some subtle design changes were made to the dashboard and layout of the cabin.

The Sharan received a facelift that was debuted at the Geneva Motor show in 2015 and brought to the car a 6-speed direct shift gearbox that was also used in the 2016 Golf GTI a new electronic system designed to reduce fuel consumption as well as the introduction of Apple CarPlay.

Both diesel and petrol engine variants are available on the Volkswagen Sharan.

Practicality and style of the car

Volkswagen designed the Sharan with a large cabin space that can easily fit seven passengers as well as accommodate luggage and other belongings. With all seven seats up, the Volkswagen Sharan has 300 litres of boot space, which can then be expanded further by folding down the back two seats to open up 711 litres of space. This provides plenty of capacity for several suitcases to be stored with room for extra baggage.

The third row of seats fold flush into the boot floor providing users with a large flat loading bay. This gives owners the option to keep them folded out of the way and only use them when needed, if they would prefer to use the Sharan as a five-seater with a large boot space. There is also a boot cover to protect the interior as well as lashing points for securing luggage.

For transporting larger items, all rear seats can be folded down to reveal a van-like 2,297-litre boot. This is larger than most of its rivals, such as the Citroën C4 SpaceTourer’s 1,851 litres and the Ford Galaxy’s 1,301 litres.

The Volkswagen Sharan can also tow up to 2,300kg, making it capable of towing a trailer or caravan. With the 1.4-litre petrol engine the Sharan can tow up to 2,000kg, while with the diesel engines this is increased to a maximum of 2,300kg.

Running costs

The Volkswagen Sharan falls into insurance groups 15 to 25 and has an annual road tax between £150 and £570. For insurance costs, the Sharan falls into a similar range to its competitors; the Ford Galaxy falls into groups 17 to 31 and the Citroën C4 SpaceTourer falls into groups 14 to 25.

How a used Volkswagen Sharan drives

The Volkswagen Sharan is available with either petrol or diesel engines, which can come with a choice of automatic or manual transmission.

For petrol engines, there is the 1.4-litre TSI engine which can put down 148bhp and achieves 0 to 62mph in 9.9 seconds. This is available with either manual or automatic transmission and has a good fuel economy of between 42.2 and 57.3mpg.

For diesel engines Volkswagen have included a 2.0-litre TDI engine with a choice of two outputs, 148bhp or 174bhp. The 148bhp engine achieves 0 to 62mph in 10.3 seconds, while the 175bhp achieves the same in 9.3 seconds. The diesel engines also have a superior fuel economy of between 43.5 and 61.4mpg. The 148bhp engine is available with either manual or automatic transmission, while the 175bhp is only available with a DSG automatic gearbox.

Features you can expect to find in a Volkswagen Sharan

Interior

The interior of the Volkswagen Sharan is well built and robust enough to sustain the impact of a busy family life. The high build quality also means that it is comfortable for all seven passengers, even on long journeys.

On the mid-range SE Nav trim level and higher, drivers will find a 6.5-inch infotainment system located on the dashboard. This comes with Volkswagen’s Discovery system that provides users with an intuitive menu and clear graphics. An integrated sat nav is also included and from the 2015 facelift included Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity.

On the entry-level S and SE trim this is replaced with a Composition Media System with Bluetooth and USB connectivity. This system is equally as easy to use as the Discovery infotainment system. Both systems are controlled through the series of buttons located around the screen as well as on the multi-function steering wheel. Located below this are the controls for the three-zone climate control system, which come as standard.

You will find a high level of comfort when travelling in the Volkswagen Sharan. All seats come with cloth upholstery and offer passengers plenty of support. The rear doors slide open making getting in and out of the rear seats easy. Some variants may feature the optional Volkswagen’s integrated child seats on the two outer seats, which can be revealed by lifting the seat cushions up. This row can also be slid forwards and backwards to free up more legroom.

Long journeys are made even more enjoyable with road, wind and engine noise kept to a minimum inside the well-insulated cabin. The suspension set up dampens rough roads and bumps, giving passengers a smooth ride.

As well as a large boot space, the Volkswagen Sharan has plenty of storage spaces located around the cabin which help to keep it clutter-free. In the front there is a good-sized glove box and a small cubby located at the front of the centre console. This can be used to store your smartphone when driving, there is also a cubby located under the central armrest. In the rear, there are fold-down tray tables and map pockets, which are well suited for storing entertainment devices. Door bins are also big enough to hold large water bottles.

Technology

The Volkswagen Sharan comes with a range of features that assist the driver when on the road. These include hill start assist, which automatically holds the brakes of the car when on a hill until the driver is ready to set off. Lane keep assist helps to prevent the car from drifting out of the lane. Other features can include cruise control, auto high beam and auto wipers.

To help with parking, there are sensors on the front and rear of the vehicle as well as a rear-view camera.

Safety

Scoring four stars out of five in the 2019 Euro NCAP safety tests, the Volkswagen Sharan also scored well when it came to adult and child protection scores. The Sharan scored 89% for adult occupant protection and 78% for child occupant protection. When it came to adult protection scores, the Sharan scored higher than the Ford S-MAX and the Ford Galaxy, which both scored 87%, as well as the Citroën C4 SpaceTourer, which scored 86%.

Safety features on the Volkswagen Sharan include, as standard, an automatic braking system, stability control, anti-lock brakes and a full complement of airbags around the cabin. The rear seats all include ISOFIX points, these provide more child seat option than any of the Sharan’s competitors, with the S-MAX and Spacetourer both include 3 ISOFIX points. These aren’t available on variants which feature Volkswagen’s integrated child seats. Other features include; tyre pressure monitoring system, seatbelt warnings and fog lights as standard.
