White VW Touareg from the front

The Volkswagen Touareg has been on UK roads since first being introduced back in 2003. The Touareg has been refined and improved with each edition, with the Mk3 competing with such upmarket options as the Audi Q7 and BMW X5. While many large SUVs stretch themselves to accommodate seven seats, the Touareg seeks to maximise the comfort available for five, maintaining exceptional levels of space, sophistication and cutting-edge technology.

With diesel, petrol and hybrid options available, all complemented by Volkswagen’s 4MOTION all-wheel drive system, power, control and efficiency are readily available. Driving aids and in-car technology have been incorporated to help enhance the experience. The Touareg was Volkswagens first hybrid offering and a fundamental shift for the VW group.

With three generations and multiple trim levels to choose from, finding a used Volkswagen Touareg to suit your needs is simple. This premium SUV is designed to deliver a certain level of luxury even at entry level. Higher specification models will exceed the expectations of even the most discerning of motorists.

Volkswagen Touareg updates and facelifts

The initial lineup of Volkswagen Touaregs made their way to market in 2003 with a choice of 2 engines, the 2.5TDI and 3.0TDI. A massive V10 5.0TDI was also available but was US only. The first generation was in production until 2010 when the second generation Touareg was released. This later model represented an upgrade on the past iteration and ensured it sat comfortably as a contemporary of both the Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7.

The second generation introduced Volkswagen's first hybrid car to the market. A 2015 facelift incorporated a more understated and elegant aesthetic, also adding some of the automotive industry’s finest technology features such as; upgraded adaptive cruise control, Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, bi-xenon headlights, improved suspension and online connectivity and services.

The third generation of the Volkswagen Touareg arrived in 2018, with a wider and longer wheelbase and even a boost in luggage capacity. This model also debuted the manufacturer’s state-of-the-art Innovision Cockpit, a 12-inch digital instrument display merged with a curving 15-inch infotainment touchscreen at the heart of the dashboard.

Practicality and style of the car

The ample proportions of this five-seat SUV ensure a road presence that commands attention. Its 4MOTION all-wheel drive system ensures you’re even able to head off the beaten track and confidently tackle more challenging environments with minimal fuss. The 3,500kg towing capacity delivered by the range of V6 petrol and diesel engines makes towing caravans and horseboxes effortless.

The cabin is size extremely generous, with plenty of head, shoulder and legroom. Without the additional two rear seats, this almost five-metre-long vehicle places a true focus on spaciousness and comfort for both the driver and all passengers.

Family motorists in search of an upmarket and capable SUV will find that the Touareg ticks every box required in terms of interior dimensions. The wide opening doors and ISOFIX anchor points on the outer rear seats make fitting and removing child seats simple. The generous 810-litre boot space expands to 1,800 litres with the rear seats folded flat. Compared to rivals like the Audi Q7 (770 litres) and Porsche Cayenne (772 litres), the Volkswagen Touareg provides great practicality.
