Why choose Arnold Clark?
The Volvo C40 is a pure-electric crossover coupé SUV, first released in 2021. The C40 is largely based on the Volvo XC40 Recharge, using the same powertrain and sharing much of the interior design and cabin technology. However, the C40 differs through its sloping roofline, battery-electric engine and revised outer styling. The Volvo C40 is a challenger to other all-electric SUVs, including the Tesla Model Y, Audi Q4 e-tron Sportback and Škoda Enyaq Coupé.
It is also a practical model, offering lots of cabin space and storage. For this reason, it’s well-suited to families and those looking for a well-designed and practical interior. Equally well suited to long distances and hugging country roads, this all-round SUV is a great option for lots of different drivers.
Volvo C40 updates and facelifts
As the model is relatively new to market, it has not yet undergone any facelifts. The Volvo C40 is heavily based on the Volvo XC40 Recharge, which was released in 2020. While borrowing many of the Volvo XC40 Recharge’s features, the C40’s coupé roofline adds new outer styling while tailoring the cabin space too.
Practicality and style of the car
A used Volvo C40 has a practical design thanks to its size. It has a height of 1,591mm, width of 1,873mm and length of 4,440mm, making it 8mm wider than the Audi Q4 e-tron Sportback. The cabin offers good knee and legroom across all five seats. The sloping roofline means tall adults will stay comfortable over shorter distances.
The Volvo C40 has a reasonable boot space of 413 litres, which is enough for a handful of bags. This can be increased to 1,205 litres by folding the rear seats down. To help load heavy items, the Volvo C40 has a flat load floor and no loading lip, making it easy to access. There is also a foldable floor which serves as a useful divider and a hidden compartment for keeping items in a safe place.
If you need extra space, there is also a practical front compartment. This compartment has a small upper section, which can store your charging cables and a smaller lower section.
A used Volvo C40 is also a suitable towing car and can tow a maximum braked capacity of up to 1,800kg. This is more than the Tesla Model Y’s 1,600kg capacity, and the Audi Q4 e-tron Sportback and Škoda Enyaq Coupé’s 1,200kg.
Running costs
The Volvo C40’s running costs are typical when compared to its rivals. Its insurance group runs from 34 to 45, whereas the Tesla Model Y’s premiums run from group 46 to 50. An attractive feature of the Volvo C40 is that due to its battery-electric engines, it is exempt from road tax.
How a used Volvo C40 drives
The C40 is powered by electric batteries and is available in two-wheel or all-wheel drive. As a two-wheel drive model, the C40 was first launched as a front-wheel drive before becoming a rear-wheel drive in 2023. In two-wheel drive, a used Volvo C40 is powered by a 70kWh battery. It has 235bhp and accelerates from 0-62mph in 7.3 seconds. It has a single charge range of 297 miles and 420Nm of torque.
In four-wheel drive, it has a 78kWh battery which produces 402bhp, accelerates from 0-62mph in 4.7 seconds and has a range of 342 miles. It also has 660Nm of torque. A used Volvo C40 is available with a one-speed automatic gearbox.
Features you can expect in a Volvo C40
Interior
The upmarket interior of the Volvo C40 is one of the model’s most attractive features. Vegan leather runs across the multi-functional steering wheel, offering you extra grip as you drive. To help you stay comfortable over long distances, the upholstery is made from wool and recycled microfibres. The Volvo C40 also has carpeted door inserts and panelling, which adds a premium feel. When driving at night, these also have subtle grey backlighting, which helps illuminate the cabin.
In the driving seat, you’ll have four-way lumbar support, which is manually adjusted. And thanks to the cockpit’s wraparound design and high seating position, driving a used Volvo C40 is an enjoyable experience. To ease winter mornings, your steering wheel comes with heating functionality as standard. The C40 is a naturally quiet car, but extra sound protection means passengers hear almost no noise while driving.
In the centre console, you’ll have a portrait nine-inch touchscreen. This screen runs on Android Auto, meaning it comes with built-in Google Maps navigation, but it is also compatible with Apple CarPlay. You can download apps through the Play Store, which automatically update over the air. You can also interact with the infotainment system through Bluetooth and voice controls, helping you stay focused on the road. The infotainment system is linked to an eight-speaker sound system.
On the dashboard, you’ll have a backlit 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, which displays the key information about your drive, including speed, charge and distance driven. It can also show full-screen sat nav, so you can easily navigate while keeping your attention on the road.
Technology
The Volvo C40 has a range of smart technology which helps to enhance the drive, including Volvo’s signature Thor’s Hammer headlights. These come with ultra-bright pixel technology making the car unmistakable in the dark. There are automatic headlamp levelling and automatically dimming interior mirrors. Inside, you’ll also have a wireless smartphone charging plate on the centre console and an illuminated glovebox and vanity mirrors.
Safety
The Volvo C40 was awarded Euro NCAP’s highest five-star safety rating, while also achieving a 92% adult safety score and an 89% score for children. Among its range of safety features are front, rear and side airbags, traffic sign recognition and automatic emergency braking.
There is also blind-spot monitoring, a cross-traffic alert system and a semi-autonomous Drive Assist system, which detects deviations in your driving and corrects them. The Volvo C40 also has three ISOFIX points making it easy to fit child safety seats.
