Black Volvo XC60 from the front

Stylish, practical and efficient, the Volvo XC60 is a powerful and adventurous mid-sized SUV equally at home on long distances as it is hugging narrow country roads. First launched in 2008, the XC60’s enduring popularity and adaptability have made it one of Volvo’s best-selling models in the UK.

With a facelift in 2013 adding to the XC60’s rounded design and introducing an eight-speed automatic gearbox, the Mk2 launched in 2017 included new mild hybrid engines and cabin technology for added driving refinement.

The XC60’s well-earned popularity reflects its quality design – inside and out. Boasting minimalist yet effective craftsmanship, the XC60’s exterior details, front grille and raised driving position make it instantly recognisable. Complemented by drive-enhancing technology and a rewardingly clean and uncluttered cockpit, the XC60 is a quality car throughout.

As well as its quality design, the XC60’s practicality makes it equally suited to long journeys as it is to short drives. Its substantial boot and cabin room means there is comfort throughout – with Mk2 models even including power-adjustable front seats with four-way power lumbar and driver seat memory.

The car’s size and practicality mean it competes closely with the Audi Q5 and BMW X3 in offering a luxurious and versatile drive. With its additional trims adding new and premium features to meet your needs, the XC60 remains a highly desirable and appealing five-door SUV.

Practicality and style of the car

Practicality is a large part of a used XC60’s appeal, with space and adjustability built into its design at every stage. Standing at a height of 1,653mm, width of 1,902mm and length of 4,708mm, the Mk2 is longer than the Audi Q5 and wider than the Jaguar F-Pace, creating even more space in the cabin. These dimensions mean the XC60 is one of the largest cars in the mid-size SUV class.

The XC60’s size means it also comes with lots of boot and storage space. Most models have between 483 and 495 litres of boot space depending on the age and generation of XC60. This increases to around 1,410 litres by folding down the rear seats, equalling the large boot found in the BMW X3.

Thanks to its powerful engines, the XC60 is an excellent choice if you need good towing capabilities. Depending on whether you opt for a petrol, diesel or plug-in hybrid, the XC60 can tow between 2,250kg and 2,400kg – plenty for most trailers and medium-sized caravans.

On the inside, you can look forward to a spacious drive, with good leg and headroom found across the front two and rear three seats. Every Mk2 model gets leather-faced upholstery, with top-level trims, such as the Inscription Pro, adding luxurious Nappa leather to all seats. This trim also includes heated seats and steering wheel, perfect for those cold winter mornings. The front seats on all Mk2s also feature a memory function, so you can conveniently recall your driving position. They are electronically powered, for enhanced convenience. Keeping the cabin tidy is easy, thanks to deep door bins, a large storage box between the front seats and a glovebox which can store small accessories.

Running costs

Depending on the trim of a used Volvo XC60, insurance premiums usually fall between groups 31 and 43. Annual road tax for entry-level trims can be a reasonable £180, while for the flagship Inscription Pro trim, tax can be £570 annually.

How a used Volvo XC60 drives

The XC60 can come with petrol or diesel engines, with some used Volvo XC60s also featuring mild hybrid technology. From 2017 onwards, many of the XC60’s engines are paired with a 48-volt battery which stores kinetic energy recovered during braking to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

A used XC60 may come with one of three mild hybrid petrol engines. The B4 has 194bhp and can achieve between 44.1 and 45.5mpg while doing 0-62mph in 8.1 seconds. The B5 delivers 247bhp, 38.2mpg and can achieve 0-62mph in 7.0 seconds, while the B6 has 296bhp, 34mpg and accelerates from 0-62mph in 6.2 seconds.

The B4 mild hybrid diesel engine achieves a combined 194bhp, 45mpg, 420Nm of torque and does 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds, while the B5 offers 232bhp, 46mpg, 480Nm of torque and accelerates from 0-62mph in 7.1 seconds.

Plug-in hybrid engines are available on XC60s manufactured after 2017. The T6 hybrid combines a 145bhp rear electric motor with a 195bhp petrol engine to create a combined 340bhp. This engine can accelerate to 62mph in 5.9 seconds and has a quoted combined range of between 113 and 282.1mpg. This is significantly more than the BMW X1’s xDrive25e PHEV and its 156.9mpg. The XC60 has one of the best fuel economy figures in the class. The T6 also has an electric-only range of 48 miles and generates around 350Nm of torque.

Features you can expect in a Volvo XC60

A used Volvo XC60 is not only exceptionally practical but also boasts a striking exterior design. With 18-inch wheels as standard – with 20-inch wheels found on some models – and its distinguished looks, the car’s size gives it a commanding presence on the road. With its elongated bonnet, prominent front grille, styled bumpers and slimline headlights, the XC60 ticks lots of boxes when it comes to styling.

Interior

Top-quality materials are included throughout the cabin, with precision stitching running through the upholstery and dashboard. A glossy black finish has been applied to surfaces and buttons, with soft-touch plastics used throughout to add to the cabin’s hardwearing, quality design.

While many entry-level XC60s feature black interiors with silver chrome highlights on the air conditioning grilles and steering wheel, higher-level trims add new colours, including a sleek matte grey, charcoal, maroon brown and crystal white. The XC60 can also come in a refreshing exterior colour, including ice white, onyx black, denim blue, pine grey, fusion red and crystal white.

Technology

If you go for the Mk2 model, you’ll get a new larger touchscreen display and digital instrument cluster to enhance your driving experience. Depending on the Mk2 trim level, the model will either come with an 8-inch or 12.3-inch digital display positioned directly in your line of sight, giving you at-a-glance access to information including speed, distance, miles per gallon as well as fuel and, if applicable, charge levels.

Mk2 XC60s also boast a nine-inch Sensus Connect touchscreen display set directly in the centre console. The 2008-2017 Mk1 Volvo XC60 comes with a seven-inch Sensus touchscreen infotainment system instead. Sensus offers Bluetooth, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, a DAB radio, hands-free phone system and 3D map navigation, all of which are easily accessed and controlled via the screen. The car’s infotainment is linked to a 10-speaker sound system as standard. Opting for the Polestar Engineered trim means that you benefit from a 13-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.

Safety

The XC60 received a five-star rating on Euro NCAP’s safety testing, as well as a 98% adult safety score and child occupant score of 87%. The XC60’s record on safety has seen it win a Best In Class safety award from Euro NCAP in 2017.

Powering its safety record, many used XC60s include autonomous braking, lane keep assist, dual-stage airbags throughout the cabin and traffic sign recognition. Some trims may also have a whiplash protection system, front and rear parking assist and a mitigation system which steers away from oncoming traffic to avoid a collision.
