Black Volvo XC40 from the front

The Volvo XC40 is a compact SUV that fuses Scandinavian design with modern technology and premium safety features. It’s an ideal choice for families and couples looking for a roomy five-seater car that has a reasonably sized boot which can be expanded by folding down the rear seats. Drivers have a lot of choice when it comes to fuel types. Volvo XC40s are available with mild hybrid engines (MHEV), plug-in hybrid engines (PHEV) and traditional petrol and diesel options, making the XC40 a good pick no matter how future proof you want your vehicle to be.

Practicality and style of the car

Black Volvo XC40 from the rear

For drivers who want an SUV that looks great, they don’t come much more attractive than the Volvo XC40. The vehicle offers LED lighting and stylish detailing as standard. We have a range of trims in stock to choose from. The XC40 range is available in solid, metallic and matte colours including Ice White, Black Stone and Fusion Red. Some of our used stock may have a two-tone colour scheme, which would have been an optional extra at the point of production.

Volvo has intentionally designed the XC40 to be a practical family vehicle that can easily handle the school run and daily commute. The interior of the vehicle offers plenty of legroom and headroom for growing families. It is fitted with ISOFIX anchor points to easily fit child car seats in the rear of the SUV.

The Volvo XC40 offers a reasonable amount of boot space compared to many saloons and hatchbacks. It has 460 litres as standard but can be expanded to an impressive 1,336 litres of boot space if you fold the rear seats down.

The Volvo XC40 provides ample space for small families. There’s plenty of room to stretch your legs in both the front and the rear seats. Little details like a pop-out rubbish bin and door pockets mean there’s no shortage of useful space inside the car, it is roomy whilst being one of the smaller SUVs in its class.

Running costs

The car isn’t expensive to run. Most models of the XC40 sit between insurance groups 22 and 28 out of 50, although EV variants of the model are a little higher in groups 36 to 42. Like most modern family cars, the Volvo XC40 isn’t too expensive to maintain with regular servicing.

How a used Volvo XC40 drives

The performance of the Volvo XC40 depends on which model you choose. The PHEV model comes out on top for both acceleration speed and miles per gallon, though you may want to remember the additional weight of the plug-in hybrid model’s battery if opting for this model. The automatic gearbox of the XC40 is relatively responsive compared to similar vehicles, and all models of the XC40 offer a smooth driving experience.

While electric XC40 models are slightly more expensive to insure, they also offer lower running costs when compared to traditional fuel types. Volvo states that their hybrid EV models can travel 28 miles on electric power alone, which is enough for most short daily journeys to the shops or to school. When it comes to fuel consumption, the XC40 petrol models return around 40 miles per gallon.

There are four engine options in models of the Volvo XC40 for sale, depending on whether you want to opt for an engine with EV capabilities or a traditional petrol or diesel engine. The type of engine that you opt for will also affect the miles per gallon that your vehicle achieves.

The 1.5-litre T3 Petrol engine packs in 161 bhp, taking it from 0 to 62 mph in 9.6 seconds and offering up to 40 mpg when you’re driving efficiently. For drivers wanting more miles, the 2.0-litre D3 Diesel engine boasts 148 bhp, can go from 0 to 62 mph in 9.9 seconds and offers up to 51 mpg.

The 2.0-litre B4 MHEV engine is the entry-level EV option, offering 194 bhp, going from 0 to 62 mph in 8.5 seconds and travelling up to 38 mpg from efficient driving. The 2.0-litre T4 PHEV engine offers 208 bhp and, like the MHEV variant, can go from 0 to 62 mph in 8.5 seconds.

If you’re driving the PHEV XC40 efficiently, you can get between 134 and 141 mpg depending on your choice of transmission. It has a 27-mile EV range when the car’s batteries are fully charged. For buyers wanting to reduce their running costs, the PHEV XC40 is by far the most fuel-efficient, although the price of charging electric vehicles can vary significantly depending on the price of energy.
