Black Škoda Kamiq from the front sitting side on

The Škoda Kamiq is a compact, fun and affordable option in an ever-expanding marketplace. Demand for SUVs is ever-increasing, and the Kamiq is a versatile, spacious option that allows economically minded drivers to enter the market without breaking the bank.

Škoda is widely known for offering good value for money, and the Kamiq is no different. Kitted out with a range of classy features as standard, the attractive and dynamic body design is equally esteemed and was recognised with a prestigious Red Dot Award in 2020 for outstanding product design. The Kamiq also received further recognition in 2021, winning the award for ‘Best small SUV for practicality’ from WhatCar?

Launched in 2019, the Kamiq is the most compact of Škoda’s SUV range but is no less mighty. There are three trims available: the SE, the SE L Executive and the Monte Carlo. Drivers can also choose from a selection of petrol and diesel engines depending on individual driving preferences. A chunky boot space paired with a host of gadgets, even at entry level, cement the Kamiq as an economical SUV with both style and substance.

Practicality and style of the car

With practicality known as a hallmark of Škoda, it’s no surprise that the used Kamiq offers it in spades. While on the smaller end of the SUV scale, it still offers ample room for passengers and plenty of boot space. The Kamiq is tall, so headroom is generous, with 1,051mm of space in the front and 1,003mm in the rear. The ISOFIX mounting points in the rear are easy to access too, minimising hassle when packing the kids into the car.

The boot also has plenty of room. With the seats up, it has a generous capacity of 400 litres, which is more than the likes of the Toyota C-HR and the Suzuki Vitara, both of which hold 375 litres. But it’s when the seats are folded down that the Kamiq really shines, offering an impressive 1,395 litres of space.

Smooth suspension makes for a nice urban ride, and a tight turning circle create a nimble feel not common for cars in the SUV space. On motorways, it’s equally reliable, with smooth higher gear transitions and solid power ensuring minimal fuss for longer drives. With size on its side, you can also rely on its towing capability, which ranges from 1,000kg to 1,250kg depending on the engine type.

Running costs

As a relatively new car in the SUV space, the used Kamiq has the added advantage of lower running costs than some of its older competitors. It sits in an insurance band between groups 9 and 20, so is lower to insure than the Toyota C-HR (which sits in band 14-22). Road tax also costs a reasonable £180 a year – so it remains an economical choice in the SUV club.

How a used Škoda Kamiq drives

Used Škoda Kamiq cars come with a range of petrol engines, as well as a single diesel option. The entry-level 1.0-litre petrol option is a great economical choice for drivers who value the comfort and style of the Kamiq without the need for top-end performance.

The entry-level 1.0-litre option still offers 95bhp, coming with a five-speed manual gearbox. There are a couple of more powerful 1.0-litre engines: both the 1.0 TSI 110 Evo and 1.0 TSI 115 come with either a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox, offering 108bhp and 113bhp respectively.

The most powerful of the petrol engines by far though is the 1.5-litre 150 Evo. The only four-cylinder option, it packs 148bhp and can accelerate from 0-62mph in a rapid eight seconds. Despite its additional power though, it remains economical. Impressive cylinder-deactivation technology shuts half the engine down when full power isn’t needed, saving on fuel usage and emissions. Like the two more powerful 1.0-litre models, the 1.5 comes with either a six-gear manual or automatic transmission.

The lone diesel Kamiq option is a 1.6-litre engine. Offering 113bhp and with a 0-62mph time of 10.4 seconds means it still packs some of the punch of its petrol peers, but its overall economy of around 55.4–56.5mpg means a used Kamiq is ideal for those who rack up the motorway miles.

Features you can expect in a Škoda Kamiq

Interior

Black Škoda Kamiq interior rear seats

Step into the Kamiq and you’ll find an interior that emphasises quality. Leather and plush, soft-touch materials create a premium experience for drivers and passengers even in the entry-level model.

It is the smart, subtle touches that set used Kamiqs apart. Škoda’s famed ‘Simply Clever’ touches ensure that every inch of the interior is made use of. An umbrella is slotted neatly into the driver’s side door, and an ice-scraper can be stored in the fuel filler cap. With a boot light doubling up as a removable torch, the thought that has gone into the Kamiq’s design is evident.

Higher-end models offer serious class for drivers and passengers alike. A sports steering wheel and panoramic glass roof are the pick of the extras, with a rear-view camera also available on top specs.

Despite its label as a ‘smaller’ SUV, its roomy for both front and rear passengers, and large back windows add to the spacious feel. Its height ensures two tall adults can easily fit in the rear without a squeeze or sacrificing on legroom.

Technology

The inclusion of the eight-inch touchscreen sat nav system would look at home in many higher-end vehicles. Wireless Apple CarPlay also comes as standard, as well as an eight-speaker stereo system, keyless entry and dual-zone climate control – leaving no doubt that the Škoda Kamiq was built with comfort and practicality in mind.

Safety

A five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP further boosts its credentials, while a highly impressive 96% adult occupant safety rating and 85% child occupant safety rating cement its reputation as a reliable family car. Automatic emergency braking comes as standard for the entry-level Kamiq, along with speed assistance and a lane assist system.

Trims available on the Škoda Kamiq

Škoda Kamiq SE

It also has 17-inch Braga alloy wheels. In addition, headlight range control and rear parking sensors ensure optimised practically for drivers at all times.

Škoda Kamiq SE L Executive

The SE L Executive is the mid-range Kamiq model. To the SE trim it adds heated front seats and a larger 9.2-inch touchscreen. It also adds larger 18-inch Vega alloy wheels. A rear-view camera makes parking a breeze, and the multi-function steering wheel puts full car control front and centre.

Škoda Kamiq Monte Carlo

The high-end Kamiq trim is classy from front to back. Sports seats in cloth and a sports steering wheel ooze style, while the panoramic glass sunroof emits a modern, airy feel to an already spacious interior.
