The Citroen C4 Cactus offers a practical ride with genuine character. With so many smaller SUVs in the increasingly competitive marketplace offering near-homogenised body specs, the C4 Cactus is refreshingly different. But as well as style, it brings substance; its slick interior and well-to-do set of practical features ensure it easily keeps pace with the pack in terms of its overall offering.

Citroën C4 Cactus updates and facelifts

On its launch in 2014, the Citroën C4 Cactus was awarded Hatchback of the Year by Top Gear Magazine, before claiming the Auto Express Small SUV of the Year award three years later. A firm favourite with critics and drivers alike, the original design of the funky hatchback was retained in its 2018 facelift, which transformed the C4 Cactus into a compact but spacious SUV.

Available across a range of petrol and diesel engines, a used C4 Cactus can vary from highly economical to an SUV that packs a punch. A multifunction touchscreen dashboard comes in even the entry-level models of the C4 Cactus, with the 2018 upgrade adding further modern touches – from a progressive hydraulic cushion suspension to Apple CarPlay – that demonstrate its winning combination of practicality and originality.

Practicality and style of the car

A crossover between a hatchback and SUV, practicality comes to the fore when you step inside a used C4 Cactus. Easy to manoeuvre around tight bends, it’s equally comfortable cutting about small urban streets as it is charging along rolling A-roads thanks to its Electronic Stability Control.

Park assist and a reversing camera also come with mid-level trims even on the pre-facelift C4 Cactus. The updated 2018 model brings an Active Safety Brake system and Blind Spot Monitoring System. You can also easily tow a small trailer thanks to the C4 Cactus’s maximum braked towing capacity of 825kg.

The compactness of the C4 Cactus doesn’t mean it compromises on space. Boot space is 358 litres, which outdoes the Ford EcoSport and Fiat 500x by eight litres apiece. Space is optimised throughout the interior in a variety of innovative ways. The airbag is mounted within the roof rather than on the dashboard, freeing up storage space.

The raised body shape allows for more space in the rear of a used C4 Cactus, allowing for four adults to fit in easily with room for a fifth in the rear. The C4 Cactus is also family-friendly, offering two ISOFIX points in the rear outer seats for booster cushions or child seats.

Running costs

With road tax sitting at £180 per year and insurance groups ranging between 11 and 23, the C4 Cactus is also impressively economical to run.

How a used Citroën C4 Cactus drives

A comfortable and relaxing drive, drivers can expect a variety of petrol and diesel engines from a used C4 Cactus. Its earlier models, prior to the 2018 facelift, comprised of three 1.2-litre petrol engines – reaching 74bhp, 81bhp and 108bhp depending on torque.

Alternatively, a 1.6-litre turbodiesel engine brings 99bhp, and during its initial release was arguably the most popular option among buyers. The earlier model of a used C4 Cactus can hit 0-62mph in a respectable 11.8 seconds – particularly decent when considering that speed was not the primary focus of its unique build.

Post-2018 and post-facelift, the C4 Cactus came fitted with a range of Citroën’s PureTech engines – all of which bump manual transmission up from the five-speed gearbox of its predecessor to a sharper six-speed.

The three-cylinder PureTech 130 1.2-litre produces 128bhp and achieves 0-62mph in a rapid 8.7 seconds. A less powerful petrol PureTech 110 option also available, offering 108bhp and a 0-62mph time of 9.9 seconds, while the BlueHDi 100 diesel engine produces 98bhp.

Features you can expect in a Citroën C4 Cactus

The 2014 initial launch of the C4 Cactus garnered awards from the likes of Top Gear Magazine and Auto Express. The model has always offered an abundance of character, space and practicality that make it a fun family car.

The exterior has a typically bold design from Citroën’s chief stylist, Mark Lloyd. Bubbled cladding on each side of the body sets it apart as a compact SUV with a difference. This protects the bodywork from minor scratches and grazes that are synonymous with the everyday life of a car. The facelifted version tones down the quirky body design and has a more upmarket feel – but still retains the rounded, bubbly style that Citroën drivers have come to know and love.

Interior and technology

Stepping inside a used C4 Cactus, drivers and passengers are greeted by a vehicle designed with practicality and comfort at the fore. Ample head and legroom, neat storage compartments and a seven-inch infotainment display are available in the entry-level C4 Cactus. The 2018 facelift brings Bluetooth streaming and a 3G and GPS-enabled app hub, Citroen Multicity Connect. The look and feel of the facelift is also tangible throughout the interior, with attractive dark cladding and plush, foamy seating.

Safety

Awarded a four-star safety rating by Euro NCAP, the C4 Cactus has an impressive 82% adult occupant safety rating along with a 79% child occupant safety rating. This score was awarded on its initial launch in 2014. With safety features like speed assistance, electronic stability control and safety assist featuring across the model as standard, higher-level trims come with features like lane departure warning and blind spot monitoring to further enhance safety.

Trims available on the Citroën C4 Cactus

Citroën C4 Cactus Touch

The Touch is the entry-level trim of the C4 Cactus, available since its launch in 2014. It has 15-inch steel wheels. It is also kitted out with a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment centre console; it is also fitted with a DAB radio. Cruise control also comes as standard, proving a real benefit for lengthy motorway drives.

Citroën C4 Cactus Feel

Upping the features as the mid-level trim post-facelift, the additions that come with the Feel aren’t frivolous. Rather than unnecessary add-ons, it offers quality modern features that genuinely benefit the driving experience. Bluetooth is an essential upgrade for the music heads, while a leather-trimmed steering wheel adds a touch of class.

Citroën C4 Cactus Flair

The Flair is the top-of-the-range trim of the C4 Cactus – and the upgrades can be felt throughout. Automatic emergency braking is a welcome safety add-on, as is the lane departure warning and speed limit recognition. The addition of phone-friendly apps makes hands-free listening easier than ever, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto included in the mix.

Citroën C4 Cactus Flair Edition

Adding a classy black leather and grey cloth interior, the stand-out extra of the Flair Edition is its thermally insulated panoramic sunroof. As a result, the Cactus is given a lighter, airier feel.
