The Ford Grand C-MAX first arrived in 2010 following a preview at the 2009 International Motor Show Germany. Offering families a seven-seat MPV alternative to vehicles such as the Renault Scenic and Volkswagen Touran, it sits between the regular five-seat C-MAX and the S-MAX in Ford’s lineup.

Ford Grand C-MAX updates and facelifts

The Ford Grand C-MAX received a facelift in 2015, which brought a revised interior with higher-quality materials and the latest technology. The trim levels remained the same, providing a choice of three: Zetec, c and Titanium X. All benefit from minimum-size 16-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning and a DAB radio. The update also saw the 1.6-litre diesel engine option retired and the introduction of a space saver spare wheel as standard.

Buyers of a used Ford Grand C-MAX will have a choice of petrol and diesel engines, all of which return impressive efficiency and punchy performance.

Practicality and style of the car

Practicality is at the heart of the Ford Grand C-MAX. With all the seats in place, the Grand C-MAX has 65 litres of boot space. Fold the third row down, however, and capacity increases to 448 litres, which is plenty for groceries, a pushchair or luggage and bigger than its rival, the Volkswagen Touran which has a 137-litre boot. The load space is flat too, making it easy to lift in bulky items. The middle-row seats also fold completely flat, providing a cavernous 1,715 litres of space.

The Grand C-MAX’s practicality doesn’t end there. It’s also a competent tow car, capable of pulling a maximum unbraked weight of 750kg and a braked weight of 1,200kg. That means you can bring a trailer or small caravan along on your journeys.

Running costs

Running costs are another strength of the Ford Grand C-MAX. It occupies insurance groups 10–26 out of 50, matching the Renault Scenic and Citroën C4 Picasso in terms of premiums. Road tax depends on the variant you choose. While some versions only incur a £35 annual charge due to their low emission levels, most are taxed at £150–180 per year.

How a used Ford Grand C-MAX drives

The engine range starts off with the 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol option, which comes with either 99bhp or 123bhp and is paired to manual transmission. Both units offer a combined fuel economy of 48mpg, with the 123bhp variant delivering a quicker acceleration time of 12.2 seconds. They’re strong and capable around town, even with a full complement of passengers, and can cruise smoothly on the open road.

The entry-level diesel is a 1.5-litre 118bhp, which develops 270Nm of torque. It’s the most efficient of the lineup, returning up to 64mpg on the combined cycle. This economy doesn’t mean a compromise on performance though – the unit matches the 123bhp petrol for acceleration, reaching 62mph from a standstill in 12.3 seconds. The other diesel is a 2.0-litre 148bhp engine, which is the most rapid option, going from 0-62mph in as little as 9.8 seconds. It has an impressive fuel economy, delivering up to 61mpg on the combined cycle. Both diesels come with either six-speed manual or six-speed Powershift automatic transmission to suit your preferences.

Features you can expect to find in a Ford Grand C-MAX

Interior

The Ford Grand C-MAX is designed to withstand the rigours of an active daily life. It’s fitted with hardwearing plastics and durable upholstery that will stand up to muddy boots (or paws) and carefree kids. There are soft-touch surfaces in the front of the cabin and a range of technologies to entertain occupants and assist drivers.

The Grand C-Max’s long body is designed to carry seven occupants and two adults can sit comfortably in the outer middle seats. These positions slide and recline, enabling taller passengers to get comfy. A child or teen can be accommodated in the middle position of the second row, and the rearmost seats provide enough space for kids. Meanwhile, sliding doors offer excellent access, even when the car is in a tight parking space.

The driving position is excellent, giving a commanding view of the road thanks to the vehicle’s raised ride height. Plus, with slim pillars and large windows, executing manoeuvres is simple. Storage is ample, with a decent glovebox and large door bins providing space for water bottles, smartphones and other belongings.

Following the refresh of the Grand C-MAX in 2015, Titanium and Titanium X trims all feature the Ford SYNC2 infotainment system, which includes an eight-inch touchscreen. This has intuitive controls, providing easy access to DAB radio, as well as Bluetooth connectivity, which enables you to stream music from your phone and make hands-free calls.

Technology

There’s a good level of technology available even on entry-level Zetec trims. The Quickclear system demists the windscreen rapidly on frosty mornings, while heated door mirrors ensure you can get on the road swiftly in winter. Ford MyKey also comes as standard. This clever feature enables you to program different keys with restricted driving modes, speed limiters and more to promote good driving habits. This is ideal for those letting new drivers use their car.

When it comes to parking and manoeuvres, the Grand C-MAX’s large windows are useful, but rear parking sensors provide an extra layer of safety, ensuring you don’t reverse into objects that you’re unaware of.

Safety

In its 2017 Euro NCAP test, the Ford Grand C-MAX was awarded three stars for safety, with an adult protection score of 76% and a child protection score of 60%. The outer middle seats feature ISOFIX mounting points for the safe transport of infants and toddlers.

There are a host of measures to give both driver and passengers peace of mind, including front and side airbags, and traction and stability control, which help to maximise grip. These are complemented by hill start assist, which prevents the car from rolling backwards when you pull away on an incline. Some used iterations may feature additional equipment, including optional blind spot warning. This keeps an eye on your blind spots and uses a visual signal to alert you to the presence of vehicles or other objects.
