A stylish city car with character and charm, the Peugeot 108 is robust and practical as well as a prime choice for drivers navigating narrow urban roads. Taking the reins from its predecessor, the Peugeot 107, the 108 has a larger feel but retains a practical compactness that offers broad appeal to city drivers.

Peugeot 108 updates and facelifts

Available as either a three or five-door model, the Peugeot 108 launched in 2014 with a choice of two low-emissions petrol engines that included Peugeot’s PureTech three-cylinder unit. Once launched, it steadily grew in popularity among buyers and experts, and in winning silver as ‘Best City Car’ in the 2017 Auto Express Power Awards, the Peugeot 108 solidified its place as a real player in the expanding city car market.

Originally launched with 15-inch alloy wheels and a five-speed manual gearbox, a facelift in 2021 brought some subtle but thoughtful changes to the 108. Dropping its three-door option, Peugeot evidently wanted to prioritise practicality in the crowded marketplace, also adding air-conditioning and modern infotainment to the mix.

The 2021 facelift arrived in three trims – Active, Allure and Collection – with a range of extra features and aesthetic upgrades available at different price points. Regardless of trim though, the 108 is a compact city car with style and character.

Practicality and style of the car

With three and five-door options, a used 108 can offer varying levels of practicality depending on what its owner requires. As a lively urban ride that can slip through tight streets with ease, it doesn’t compromise too heavily on space. Plenty of leg and head room make it easy to fit four adults, particularly with the five-door option. ISOFIX mountings in the rear also ensure that family life is catered for, enabling the quick installation of car seats.

The boot itself is a major upgrade on space from the 107 model; rather than the 139 litres of its predecessor, the 108 has a more capacious 196 litres. That’s larger than a host of its rivals in the city car market, including the Renault Twingo (188 litres) and the Suzuki Splash (178 litres). Better still, you can slot the 50/50 seats down to really make the most of the interior room. Doing so will get you a generous 868 litres of capacity, enough for large luggage on a couple’s retreat or even packing one of the kids off to university.

Running costs

Another real win for the Peugeot 108 is its low running cost. City cars are often on the lower end of the running cost scale and the 108 is no different, sitting at the lower half of the insurance brackets. You can expect to find it between insurance groups 6–8 out of 50 depending on factors like engine size and power. Road tax is also comparatively low, at £180 annually (after the first year).

How a used Peugeot 108 drives

The 108 is available with a choice of two low-emission, three-cylinder petrol engines. The entry-level engine is 1.0-litre, a minor increase on the 107’s 998cc engine and produces 68bhp. The higher-powered 1.2-litre PureTech VTi, however, is a little more powerful and can run at 82bhp.

Both engines run through a five-gear transmission, although higher spec models on the 1.0-litre engine offered a 2-Tronic semi-automatic gearbox as an alternative. Depending on engine size, the used 108 can achieve 0-62 in 10.5–14.4 seconds.

2021’s facelift limited the engine choice down to the 1.0-litre, retaining the three-cylinder petrol unit and five-speed manual gearbox. With fuel economy sitting between 54.8 and 58.9mpg, it’s impressively economical and can reach a top speed of 99mph.

Features you can expect in a Peugeot 108

Interior

Open up the model's three or five doors, and you’ll find an interior that uses every inch of space to the benefit of the driver and passengers. Even at entry-level, you’ll have a seven-inch multimedia screen as your infotainment point, which can be connected via USB ports or wireless depending on the trim. All the essentials are at your fingertips with the Active trim, the early mid-range model, with controls on the steering wheel putting volume and calls within close reach. The higher entry trims on the original 2014 108 also add extra driver-friendly touches, including a rev counter and trip computer.

A choice of interior themes is also available on the 108 to really give the interior some extra personality. The seven decors include Diamond, Kilt, Barcode and Sport, while the Dual theme is only available with the three-door 108.

Technology

The 2021 facelift sees the used Peugeot 108 brought right up to date with exciting, modern touches. Leaving its cosy three-door model behind, the five-door version comes with a sleek, modern interior that speaks to the younger driver. This model offers a trendy, dark-coloured dash, orange trim and up-to-date tech even in its ‘Access’ entry-level trim. Technology on the 108 has been upgraded, with a new-look infotainment system that connects wirelessly to devices via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Air conditioning also comes as standard with the updated version, as well as electronic windows and LED daytime running lights.

Safety

With safety a priority for cars navigating city streets, used Peugeot 108s come with a reassuringly high safety rating. Given four stars by EuroNCAP, the 108 scores 80% on both its adult and child-occupancy rating. With anti-lock braking and a speed limiter even on its entry-level model, the 108 is not only practical around urban streets but safe, too.

Trims available on the Peugeot 108

Peugeot 108 Access

The entry-level trim of the Peugeot 108, the Access has a good amount of tech and practical features. Set with 14-inch steel wheels, drivers can expect LED daytime running lights and remote central locking as well as a USB insert for media playback. Safety is also prioritised in the Access, with anti-lock braking and electronic force distribution two key components that secured its high safety rating.

Peugeot 108 Active

A step up from the entry-level, the 108 Active offers a seven-inch capacitive colour touchscreen to host an array of media benefits including DAB radio and Bluetooth. The Active is also fitted with manual air conditioning and the wheel size is increased to 15-inches.

Peugeot 108 Allure

15-inch ‘Thorren’ alloy wheels are a stylish boost for the Allure, but the trim’s main attraction is an improved driving experience. Front fog lights and automatic headlights are added for optimised vision along with electric and heated mirrors. A reversing camera aids parking, and the addition of Peugeot’s Open & Go system adds keyless entry.

Peugeot 108 Collection

The top-of-the-range trim adds class both inside and out of the 108. Adding colour to the reversing camera and tint to the rear windows, body-coloured door handles also fine-tune the aesthetics and create a more rounded, attractive colour scheme.
