Green Peugeot 308 from the front

The Peugeot 308 is a spacious, economical and smart-looking compact hatchback, available as either a hatchback or estate. The hatchback version was launched in 2007, while the SW Estate was launched in 2008 and has received a variety of facelifts and updates that have made it a strong contender in its class.

Peugeot 308 updates and facelifts

The Mk2 308, and 308 Touring, was launched in 2013 and received some subtle design changes. It was then updated again in 2017, when it received some technology updates, including an updated touchscreen infotainment system and a sat nav system developed with TomTom. This update also added Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity. In 2021, Peugeot carried over some design elements from its other cars and incorporated them into the Mk3 308, such as a second touchscreen display and the digital instrument panel from the Peugeot 3008.

The Peugeot 308 is practical, good looking and comes with a range of features that enable it to compete well in the market. The 308’s closest rivals include the SEAT Leon, Volkswagen Golf, Citroën C4 and Ford Focus.

Available with petrol, diesel or hybrid engines, a used Peugeot 308 offers a good range of options for drivers to choose from to suit their needs.

Practicality and style of the car

The Peugeot 308 stands out on the market for its large boot space, making it a practical car compared to its rivals. The hatchback has a 412-litre boot, which expands to 1,323 litres with the rear seats down. The SW Estate has a 608-litre boot, which can be expanded to 1,634 litres. The Peugeot 308 has more space than some of the most popular cars in its category. For example, the Volkswagen Golf has a 380-litre capacity, and the Ford Focus offers 375 litres.

On hybrid versions of a Peugeot 308 hatchback, the boot size is slightly reduced to 361 litres, and 1,271 litres with the rear seats down, to make space for extra technology such as the battery. On the SW Estate boot space is also slightly reduced to 548 litres, or 1,574 with the rear seats down. With the rear seats down, this is still larger than the non-hybrid Volkswagen Golf’s maximum 1,237 litres.

The 308’s boot has a small loading lip that makes loading and unloading easier. It is also square shaped which is useful for organising and packing items such as suitcases or storage boxes.

When transporting larger items, you can take advantage of the maximum towing limit of around 1,500kg, regardless of what engine you choose, which is enough to tow a small trailer.

Running costs

A used Peugeot 308 falls within insurance groups 19 to 30. This is slightly higher compared to rivals, with the SEAT Leon falling within groups 11 to 24 and the Citroën C4 within groups 13 to 22, but the stand-out practicality of the 308 makes up for this. Road tax is around £170 to £180 a year.

Petrol, diesel and hybrid engine options are available on a used Peugeot 308, all offering good fuel efficiency and performance.

The petrol engine is a 1.2-litre PureTech three-cylinder turbocharged engine with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. It offers 129bhp and achieves 0 to 62mph in 9.7 seconds. It also delivers good fuel efficiency, returning 50.0mpg.

The 1.5-litre BlueHDi diesel engine is capable of 129bhp and reaches 0 to 62mph in 10.3 seconds. The diesel engine has a superior fuel economy than the petrol engine, offering 64.4mpg and also comes with an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

There are two hybrid engines to choose from. Both use the same 1.6-litre PureTech petrol engine with a 12.4kWh and electric motor for a combined 320Nm of torque and either 178bhp or 222bhp. These engines return 281.1 and 266.2mpg respectively.

Features you can expect in a Peugeot 308

Interior

Peugeot 308 front interior seats, centre console, dashboard, gear selector, infotainment screen and steering wheel

There is decent room inside the cabin for passengers with a good amount of headroom and legroom for all. Most trims come with lumbar support for the driver's seat to make long journeys more comfortable, and the passenger seats are also supportive. Noise is kept to a minimum inside the cabin to make it an enjoyable ride when on the motorway, and the 308’s suspension also helps to keep the ride pleasant and smooth.

Passengers will appreciate the storage cubbies that help keep the cabin tidy. In the front, there are several spots to store personal items such as your keys, wallet and smartphone. There is a large cubby underneath the front armrest which can be used to keep valuables out of view and a smaller cubby at the front of the central console is great for storing your smartphone. This space on the Allure Premium trim and above also features a wireless charging pad, while on lower trim levels there are USB-C charging points in both the front and rear, so you can keep your smartphone and other entertainment devices charged while on the go. In the rear, there are storage nets on the back of the front seats and a handy cubby on the back of the centre console to help keep the space tidy. Door bins are deep and have carpet on the bottom to dampen any rattling noises while driving.

Technology

The smart design of the 308 will appeal to families, business drivers and many more. The interior is equally as sharp and stylish, featuring high-quality materials and finishes that give it a premium feel.

On the centre of the dashboard is the infotainment display, which comes in two sizes, pre-2017 iterations have a 9.7-inch screen, while post-2017 iterations received a 10-inch screen. Both screens have a high resolution, making graphics clear, crisp and easy to navigate.

On iterations after 2021, you’ll find a secondary touchscreen display featuring Peugeot’s I-Toggle widget bar, which makes navigating the infotainment screen even easier by setting shortcuts to frequently used functions, such as the music library or climate control. It can also include voice recognition software as another way to access the infotainment’s functions.

The 308’s infotainment screen comes with smartphone connectivity as standard. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is also available for smartphone mirroring. An integrated sat nav can also be included with the infotainment display.

Also, on iterations after 2021, as part of Peugeot’s I-Cockpit system, a digital screen displays the speedometer, rev counter and fuel gauge. The dials can be displayed in either a minimalistic design or a smart 3D design.
