The Peugeot 408 is a crossover vehicle, borrowing design elements from SUVs, saloons and hatchbacks. Launched in the UK in 2022, it has a high-riding hatchback design that is complemented by exceptional practicality and a dominant road presence.
The Peugeot 408 has a longer wheelbase than Peugeot’s 308 SW estate, helping it offer more practicality and storage space. This makes it an ideal option for longer distance journeys with all the family. With three trim levels available – Allure, Allure Premium and the top-of-the-range GT – there’s plenty of engaging technology and driver assistance technology too.
The engine range includes efficient plug-in hybrid models, meaning the 408 competes against vehicles such as the CUPRA Formentor, Kia EV6 and Citroën C5 X.
Practicality and style of the car
The Peugeot 408 is a generously sized vehicle, measuring 4,687mm in length and 2,062mm in width, making it 237mm longer than the Cupra Formentor and 119mm longer than the Renault Arkana. This size contributes to the volume of interior room available in the cabin and also when it comes to boot space.
Petrol models offer a substantial 536 litres of luggage capacity, while hybrid models provide 471 litres due to the placement of the batteries. The rear seats split 60:40, allowing for increased cargo space when needed, with the volume expanding to a remarkable 1,611 litres in petrol variants or 1,545 litres in hybrid models.
The model is also more than capable when it comes to towing. The 1.2-litre petrol models have a kerb weight of 1,392kg and can tow a braked trailer weighing up to 1,200kg. Plug-in hybrids, meanwhile, have a kerb weight of around 1,700kg but can tow up to 1,400kg.
Running costs
When it comes to insurance, the model falls into different groups depending on the engine and trim. The 1.2-litre PureTech variants offer the lowest cost of the model’s premiums, occupying groups 19 to 21 out of 50. Hybrid variants can be found in groups 28 to 31. This compares to premiums for the CUPRA Formentor, which sits in groups 19 to 33.
For those choosing the 1.2-litre PureTech model, road tax is set at £180 per year. The 1.6-litre plug-in hybrid has an original list price of over £40,000, meaning an annual fee of £560 is charged for the first five years of tax renewal. Thereafter, this drops to the standard rate for PHEVs – £170 per year.
How a used Peugeot 408 drives
Engine options in the Peugeot 408 include a 1.2-litre PureTech petrol engine and two plug-in hybrid variants. The PureTech engine, which is also found in other models from Peugeot, delivers 128bhp and comes paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. This delivers a 0–62mph acceleration time of 10.4 seconds. Fuel economy ranges between 41mpg and 48mpg, depending on driving conditions.
If you’re more interested in greener options, the 408 offers two plug-in hybrids: the Hybrid 180 and the Hybrid 225. Both feature a 1.6-litre petrol engine coupled with a 12.4kWh battery pack. The Hybrid 180 accelerates from 0-62mph in 8.1 seconds and achieves a combined fuel economy of 215mpg. The Hybrid 225 is slightly faster, reaching 62mph from a standstill in 7.8 seconds and returning a combined efficiency of 211mpg. Both deliver a 40-mile all-electric range, which will more than suffice for day-to-day motoring.
In relation to charging the plug-in hybrid options, the 408 comes standard with a 3.7kW charger that fully recharges the battery in under four hours. An optional 7.4kW charger can cut this time in half.
