The Peugeot 508 is a stylish and practical model, making it a popular option with families. It has a spacious interior with ample storage and plenty of room for passengers. There is a smart range of cabin technology that ensures a smooth drive for all. The 508 is available as both a hatchback and as an estate, which is called the Peugeot 508 SW.
Both the hatchback and estate compete well against other large family cars. The stylish exterior and interior of the 508 comparable with other premium models such as the BMW 3-series, the Audi A4, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the Mazda 6.
Peugeot 508 updates and facelifts
Launched in 2010, the Peugeot 508 was designed to be a combination of a family car and an executive car. It received a facelift in 2014 which made some subtle design changes to the exterior and added some features such as a rear-view camera. In 2018, the 508 received another facelift to the exterior and interior. The front bumpers were redesigned to give the 508 a stylish and premium look with a sculpted front, a new front grille and headlight design. Inside, soft-touch materials feature more prominently, giving the interior an upmarket feel.
In 2023, another facelift introduced some design changes as well as new technology. In the interior, high-level trims come with a 10-inch touchscreen. Peugeot also refined the engine range adding to the available petrol, diesel and hybrid options.
Practicality and style of the car
Both the estate and hatchback versions offer drivers large amounts of space for storing luggage and shopping in the boot. The 2023 508 offers a 487 litre boot which expands to 1537 litres when the rear seats are down. This is larger than the 455 litres and 1,510 litres that the Mercedes-Benz C-Class provides. The estate, the 508 SW, comes with 530 litres of boot space that expands to 1,780 litres. This is more than its rival the Audi A4 Avant, which offers 495 litres and has an expanded size of 1,510 litres – 270 litres less than the 508 SW.
The loading bay on the 508 is flat and has a wide opening making it easier to load large items. A ski hatch in both versions allow for long items to be easily transported without folding down the rear seats. Other features in the rear of the vehicle include three ISOFIX points, two on the outermost rear seats and one on the front passenger seat. This enables child seats to be securely installed.
For towing larger items, the 508 SW can tow between 1,290kg and 1,800kg, which is enough for a small trailer or caravan. The 1.2-litre petrol engine can tow 1,290kg. The 1.5-litre diesel can tow slightly more with a 1,500kg capacity. The 2.0-litre petrol can tow the most with a 1,800kg limit. The regular hybrid can tow up to 1,340kg and the PSE model can tow 1,290kg.
Running costs
The Peugeot 508 and 508 SW fall into insurance groups 21 to 34 with an annual road tax between £170 and £560. This is about average for its class and competition. For example, the BMW 3-Series, both hatchback and estate, falls into insurance groups 24 to 42 and has an annual road tax between £180 and £570. However, the Peugeot 508 is more affordable than the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, which falls into groups 33 to 45 and has a road tax between £560 and £570.

Features you can expect in a Peugeot 508
With eye-catching headlight design and smooth bodywork, the 508 has a desirable and striking outer design.
Interior
The dashboard is finished with high-quality materials and features a good amount of technology to keep modern drivers satisfied.
Depending on age and trim, you will find a screen on the centre console. On iterations before 2023 and on the Active trim, an eight-inch screen is included. While on the Allure trim, a ten-inch screen is included. This system comes with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity, as well as a DAB radio for onboard entertainment and navigation. As standard, the system comes with integrated sat nav with 3D mapping for easier navigation.
This system is controlled through the touchscreen interface or through shortcut keys located beneath the screen. Some trims also come with voice control functionality, letting you adjust your infotainment settings without taking your eyes off the road. The menu is easy to use and navigate, especially with the shortcut buttons. The system is also used to control car functions such as the dual-zone climate control which comes as standard.
On the Allure trim, you will find Peugeot’s I-Cockpit digital instrument cluster. This display shows your key drive information and can be customised to display your speed, distance driven, fuel economy and remaining fuel.
Thanks to the model’s spacious design, passengers have good amounts of legroom and headroom, making it comfortable even on long drives. The 508 SW has slightly more headroom as the roofline isn't as sloped as it is on the hatchback, but tall adults won’t find themselves feeling cramped in the back of either car.
Storage spaces are dotted around the cabin to help keep the interior clutter-free. There is a good-sized glove box and a small cubby on the centre console for small handheld accessories. Depending on the trim, this cubby can also come with a wireless smartphone charging plate.
Map pockets are located on the back of the front seats and are large enough for entertainment devices. Handy USB ports also make it easy to keep phones and devices charged on the go. There are also good-sized door bins which are deep enough for storing bottles.
Technology
The Peugeot 508 comes with a range of driver assist features to help the driver when on the road. Depending on the age and trim, you will find cruise control which helps you maintain speeds when on the motorway. There is also adaptive cruise control which adjusts the speed of the vehicle to maintain a safe distance even during traffic. Active lane-keep assist also comes as standard and helps to prevent the vehicle from drifting out of lane.
When driving on rough roads, the 508’s suspension system smooths out most bumps. The adaptive suspension system that comes with the Peugeot Sport Engineered hybrid engine provides a firm ride that still feels smooth over poor-quality roads.
Other features include automatic high beam and automatic wipers and traffic sign recognition which notifies the driver of local speed limits and oncoming speed cameras. Front and rear parking sensors make backing into tight parking spots a little easier.
On the First Edition trim, the Peugeot 508 has night vision technology that uses an infra-red camera to detect obstaces while driving in the dark. This trim also includes a fully automated parking assistance feature, which uses the multiple cameras and sensors around the car to autonomously park the car.
Safety
The Peugeot 508 received a full five stars from Euro NCAP after safety tests. The 508 also scored highly on adult and child occupant tests, scoring 96% and 86%, respectively. The adult safety scores higher than the 90% awarded to the Audi A4 and the 93% awarded to the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.
Among the model’s suite of safety features, there are front and rear airbags, an active bonnet for pedestrian protection, autonomous emergency braking, and a distance alert system that alerts drivers of objects and vehicles in close proximity to the vehicle. A driver attention alert system also comes as standard. This alerts drivers to take a break if the car detects erratic driving that may be a result of driver fatigue. Other safety features include blind spot monitoring which is available on Allure trims and higher.
