Why choose Arnold Clark?
Ford’s S-MAX Vignale is a seven-seater, primed for large families or those who need more room than a normal 5-seater offers. Even with all seven seats in place, there’s a decent boot for bags and other belongings. Keeping the rear-most seats folded, or just one folded, means you have a large boot for luggage.
Ford S-Max Vignale updates and facelifts
It was the second in Ford’s range to be released as a Vignale. With this spec, it comes with additional finishing touches for both style and comfort. Expect the likes of chrome finishing on the outside and leather seats inside, bringing a more premium feel to everyday driving. A suite of entertainment options and driving aids come as standard, elevating it from a typical family MPV.
As you would expect from the brand known for its practical models, the S-MAX has been part of Ford’s line-up since 2006. It’s designed to be more than a sensible MPV, with a number of design choices and a raft of technology that makes for a more relaxing drive. Competitors include the Volkswagen Touran along with other seven-seater SUVs like the Škoda Kodiaq and Peugeot 5008.
The Ford S-MAX Vignale was first released in 2006. Mk2 came along in 2015 and sales for new models ended in 2023. A facelift in Mk2 brought more adjustment capabilities to the front seats and a sportier front bumper. When released in 2015, the S-MAX Vignale was paired with Ford’s powerful 2.0-litre diesel engine. S-MAX Vignale cars from 2021 onwards are all petrol hybrids.
Practicality and style of the car
The Vignale is a trim level on the S-MAX which means you can expect some upgrades on every S-MAX in this specific line-up. Those include the likes of 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, leather upholstery, eight-inch touchscreen and 12 speakers. Chrome finishing across the exterior sets off the more premium feel from the outset. Some versions have been customised with Ford’s options, meaning it’s possible to find used models with 19-inch alloy wheels or even a massage function in the front seats.
The Ford S-Max Vignale measures 4,796mm long x 1,916mm wide x 1,655mm tall. This makes it around 10cm longer and 3cm wider than the Škoda Kodiaq and 15cm longer and 7cm wider than the Peugeot 5008. This all equates to greater interior space. Keep the Ford S-MAX as a five-seater and you’ll have 700 litres to fill.
This reduces to 285 litres when the rearmost seats are in position, but it leaves room for a couple of holdalls or a few bags of shopping. It’s a generous offering, with the Volkswagen Touran offering 187 litres of boot space with the rear seats up. If you don’t need to carry passengers, you can fold down all five of the rear seats to have 2,200 litres of space available – 343 litres more than the Volkswagen Touran – making it ideal for when you need to pick up furniture or white goods.
When you need to go from five-seats to seven, the one-touch design means you can fold them out in one simple move. With its ability to tow up to 2,000kg, it can pull a trailer to hold luggage if you need to fill all seven seats. It’s also capable of towing a small caravan – another reason why it’s popular with families.
Running costs
This Vignale upgrade on the Ford S-MAX falls into insurance group 25 to 34. It’s similar to other non-Vignale models, with the Zetec in groups 16 to 23 and the ST in groups 23 to 34. Road tax is between £180 and £570 a year.
How a used Ford S-MAX Vignale drives

Ford S-MAX Vignale’s produced after 2021 have a Duratec FHEV drive train: a 2.5-litre petrol hybrid that delivers 190bhp. It has a 0 to 62 mph time of 9.8 seconds, which should give you confidence that you’ll have plenty of power to get this big vehicle up steep hills, even when fully loaded. The engine is designed to use both petrol and electric power all the time, helping you save on fuel on every drive.

ISOFIX points in the back make this car suitable for those with young children or grandchildren.
The S-MAX is fitted with Ford’s intelligent speed limiter, which will detect road signs to determine the set speed and automatically slow the car if going too fast. Lane-keeping aid will also alert you when you’re veering close to the line on the motorway and actively help steer you back on track.
