Among the best-selling vehicles on the British market are small family hatchbacks, and the Renault Megane is an excellent example. With its smart looks and agile drive, it’s a perfect solution for inner-city and suburban motoring.
The Megane first arrived in 1996, competing with the Ford Escort, Volkswagen Golf and Vauxhall Astra. The Mk2 edition was launched in 2002, providing a more characterful appearance and a charismatic drive. It was named European Car of the Year in 2003. The Mk3 went on sale in 2009, boasting sleeker styling and offering a choice between hatchback and coupé bodies.
When the Mk4 Megane arrived in 2016, the model had become a firm favourite on UK roads. A five-door hatch and Sport Tourer (estate) were available, and both were initially offered with two petrol and two diesel engines. Trim levels included Expression+, Play, Dynamic S Nav, Signature Nav, Iconic, GT Nav and RS Line
This was the final iteration of the Renault Megane in its combustion engine guise. In 2023, the model was retired and replaced with the sharply styled and exciting Renault Megane E-Tech – an all-electric rival to the Nissan Leaf and Kia Niro EV.
Renault Megane updates and facelifts
In 2017, the 1.6-litre Renault Megane GT joined the lineup, and in 2018 the trim and engine choices were simplified. Now, buyers could choose from Play, Iconic and GT-Line variants. The engine range was reduced to a single petrol and one diesel unit. In the same year, the sporty Megane RS 280 went on sale, boasting a 1.8-litre petrol engine and four-wheel drive. Six months later, the RS 300 Trophy launched, offering 296bhp.
In 2020, the Megane received a facelift, which introduced fresh on-board technology, a revised exterior design and a more premium feel inside. A plug-in hybrid engine was also added to the choice of powertrains.
Practicality and style of the car
The boot in a Renault Megane offers a decent 434 litres of space – more than is offered by the SEAT Leon and Volkswagen Golf, which both have 380 litres. That’s enough for a pushchair, a set of golf clubs or a couple of small suitcases. Fold the 60/40 split rear seats down and you get 1,247 litres at your disposal.
For extra capacity in both the cabin and boot, choose the Megane Sport Tourer trim. This provides more legroom, particularly for rear passengers, so adults can travel comfortably even on long journeys. There’s 580 cubic litres of luggage space,40 litres more than the Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer’s 540 litres. A maximum of 1,695 litres is opened up by lowering the rear bench. You’ll also get added flexibility thanks to a pop-up load divider and an underfloor storage area.
Running costs
Most of the Mk4 (2016–2023) hatchbacks and Sport Tourers occupy groups 14–27 out of 50 for insurance, with only the RS hot hatch editions sitting in groups 37–39. As such, you’ll pay similar premiums to the SEAT Leon which sit in groups 15–27.
Selected Megane variants produced before April 2017 are exempt from road tax due to their low emissions. Thereafter, the model incurs a £180 annual fee.
How a used Renault Megane drives
Two petrol and two diesel engines were offered at launch. The entry-level petrol is a 1.2-litre TCe with either manual or automatic transmission. This returns a maximum combined fuel economy of 51.4–52.3mpg. It was dropped later in the Megane’s lifespan.
More popular is the 1.3-litre TCe. This produces 138bhp and is paired with a choice of six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic transmission. Like the 1.2-litre option, it delivers up to 51.4–52.3 mpg but has a faster 0-62mph acceleration time – 9.7 seconds for the automatic and 9.4 seconds for the manual.
Diesel power comes from either a 1.5-litre or 1.6-litre diesel, the latter of which was retired at the same time as the 1.2-litre petrol engine. The 1.5-litre unit has an output of 113bhp and comes with a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic gearbox. It gets from 0-62mph in 11.1 seconds and returns up to 72.4–76.4mpg on the combined cycle.
Those seeking an environmentally friendly option can choose the 1.6-litre E-Tech powertrain. This teams a 1.6-litre petrol engine with a 64bhp electric motor for a combined output of 158bhp. The 9.8kW battery provides an all-electric range of up to 30 miles, and the car can travel from 0-62mph in 9.4 seconds.
At the other end of the scale is the Megane GT with its 1.6-litre TCe petrol engine. This produces 202bhp and propels you from 0-62mph in just 7.1 seconds. There’s no great sacrifice in fuel economy either, with a combined figure of 47.1mpg.

Features you can expect to find in a Renault Megane
Interior
The Renault Megane offers a good level of space for both driver and passengers. Not only do all occupants get generous headroom, there’s plenty of legroom too. The outer rear seats are best for children and teens, although they can accommodate two adults.
The Megane has a feeling of quality inside thanks to soft-touch surfaces and solid construction. Models from 2016 to 2020 have dual-zone climate control, which is operated using the touchscreen. Following the 2020 update, however, rotary dials were re-introduced for added convenience. Little touches such as the thin strip lighting on the doors help to create a feeling of class and comfort.
The Megane has plenty of handy storage, including a trinket tray which houses the USB and 12V connectors. There are cupholders in the central armrest and the flock-lined door bins are large enough to accommodate drinks bottles, guidebooks and other items.
Early variants of the Mk4 Megane feature a DAB radio and Bluetooth connectivity as standard. The second tier Dynamique Nav trim includes a 7.0-inch touchscreen R-Line multimedia system with sat nav. When the Megane was updated in 2020, a 7.0-inch touchscreen was introduced as standard to the slimmed-down trim lineup. This includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. The top-spec R.S. Line features a 9.3-inch screen, and some used iterations may also be fitted with the optional seven-speaker Bose sound system.

Most iterations of the Megane also include cruise control for easy motorway driving. The Visio System, which incorporates; traffic sign recognition, headlight adjustment and lane departure warning which helps to prevent you from straying out of your lane on the motorway.
Safety
When it was tested in 2015, the Mk4 Renault Megane was awarded a full five-star rating. Adult and child occupant protection scored 88% and 87% respectively. The Megane has two ISOFIX anchor points, meaning youngsters can be carried securely. Both hatchback and Sport Tourer editions come complete with six airbags, automatic emergency braking and traffic sign recognition as standard.
You can also find some used variants with the Safety Pack, which adds adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist. The former enables you to maintain your speed and a preset distance from the vehicle in front; the latter steers you back into your lane should you start to stray. The Motorway Pack was also an option from new and includes semi-autonomous cruise with lane centering and hands-free parking.
